Has Johnny Depp lost his touch?

I would say he is an interesting individual. "Dark Shadows" was a pretty odd script to begin with imo.

The Lone Ranger? BORING....yawn. I might watch it when it comes on cable or Netflix.

I would like to see him in more serious roles.

My guess is that he is just flitting about doing what he wants. Must be nice.;)

Johnny Depp did a fine job with Lone Ranger. No actor could have saved that bomb of a movie.

I didn't mind The Lone Ranger.

I do feel that Johnny Depp is playing Johnny Depp in most movies now. The strange quirky thing is getting old.

You can say that about a lot of actors now. Denzel Washington plays Denzel Washington in every movie he does.

There wasn't anything that could save "Pirates of the Lone Ranger"--once they decided to Bruckheimerize the heck out of it, it was doomed to be nothing more than another forgettable summer action flick. I liked it for that, but it could've been a lot more.

::yes:: I agree.

Me too. I'm not getting all the hate. It's a romp not a PBS documentary.

DH's issue with Johnny, it just seems like if he's in the movie, Helena Bonham Carter has to be in the movie. I know that they have done 6 together, but it just seems like there's so many more than that.

I go to a movie to be entertained. Few and far between movies don't do that, so I must be in the same boat you are. Everybody we know that said they didn't like the movie, can't give a specific reason, they just don't like it.

IIRC, she's married to Tim Burton - and Burton directs many of Depp's films.

My dh and I loved The Lone Ranger. When we left the theater we said that is one we will buy when it comes out on DVD.

Tim has directed 5 of the 6 movies that they star in together. Lone Ranger is the only one he didn't have his finger on. When DH first saw previews for it, they didn't show Helena and Burton's name wasn't attached to it, so DH made the comment something along the lines of finally a non Pirate movie without Helena along for the ride. It was a couple of months later, when we saw a different preview and this time she was shown, that DH groaned and made that comment along the lines of there goes that movie.

Johnny Depp is one of the few actors who becomes a different person with every role he takes on. So many actors seem to be the same person in every role. Johnny Depp is an actual talent.

Johnny Depp has always taken on odd and quirky roles and actually became a bit more mainstream when he took the role of Jack Sparrow. I personally prefer him when he stars in the smaller, odder films - they just seem to fit him.

I read that he said recently that he might be ready to wind down his movie career soon. He has another Pirates movie and a sequel to Alice in Wonderland coming if I'm not mistaken.

ITA.

I didn't like the Lone Ranger because I remember the original series and didn't like how both were portrayed as bumbling idiots and/or strange most of the film.

Just my opinion. DGD loved it.

I agree. I enjoy the movies he's done lately well enough, but I miss his more serious side. I read a quote from him about one of the Pirates movies where he talked about enjoying making movies his kids could see, but I miss projects like Finding Neverland and The Rum Diary. He is so much better in those serious but still quirky roles than in the stuff he's been doing lately.

That said, I absolutely adored Dark Shadows. I loved the show when I was a kid and the movie was campy as hell and unbelievably true to the original.

I sort of agree with this! I really adore him in his more recent, more family friendly type stuff, but also loved him in older films like Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man. Like I said above, I think he's really talented. He has done so many types of movies and he does them all well.
