Does anyone ever feel like their interest (or perhaps borderline obsession) with Disney is something to keep under-wraps until you're the presence of a kindred spirit?

There are probably a few causes that lead to this, but somewhere along the roads of life, I picked up the idea that liking Disney is not a noble hobby. Because of that sentiment I stick to only mentioning Disney in a business sense - in terms of how efficiently the company operates, or how well the stock is performing. I live and work in Manhattan, and in my work environment, not many can understand why grown, childless adults would actually choose to go to Disney. While we visit wdw often enough, I've learned to never divulge my vacation plans at work.

My husband, the yin to my yang, thinks it's crazy to feel at all ashamed, and playfully rats me out in public on our Disney plans. He is, of course, right to wave his Disney-geek flag high - because as anyone with a secret will know, it doesn't feel good to show the world anything but the true you. This whole thing is far from having a legitimate problem, but I thought there may be others that feel the same way. I pose this thought to let other closeted Disney fans that they're not alone! :wave2:

I agree with you, there are people who get it and there are people who don't. My situation is complicated by the fact that I don't have kids, and I often go to the parks by myself. Trust me, I am judged frequently. But on the flip side there are lost of people in my life who not only understand and support my love of Disney, they are flat out jealous of how much time I spend at Disney.

I totally agree with you - most people just don't understand or think it's an ok "obsession" or "hobby"
:confused3

Believe me, i do the same things as you

I've had people take bets on how long I can have a conversation with someone before the topic of Disneyland or Walt Disney World comes up. LOL! Luckily, people know this about me and just accept it.

I wish I could understand what you mean, but unfortunately I can't.

But I have this friend, see, and he, I mean she, can maybe sort of relate to what you're saying. I mean, this friend, well he, I mean she, may have the same, ahem, problem. Not that it's a problem, far from it. It's just something my friend doesn't always discuss in public.

:rolleyes1

Haha! Well be sure to tell your "friend" she's not alone!

I am happiest when talking disney or dogs. I know most people around me just don't get it, but I am finally to a point in my life where I feel they are just going to have to accept me for who I am.

I tend to say to people I'm going to Florida and I always hear back, Disney again? I want to say Suck it! but I don't. I tend to play down my Disney obsession. When I find a fellow geek then I put my real geek on.

I have found my kindred spirits in this thread!

We are empty nesters who love Disney but have only had 5 trips over the last 30 years due to budget constraints. Our trip just before Christmas 2013 (had not vacationed at all in 5 years previous as we were putting 3 kids through college and weddings) brought about comments like: You are going there AGAIN?? Umm, I have not been anywhere on vacation in 5 years!

We are going to Aulani for our 30th anniversary this year, along with our first visit to Disneyland on the way back. You would think we were going to camp in the ghettos of Honolulu and LA from the reactions we got from our family!
