I have a lot of amex points and want to rent a car but I was reading on the website that you can't use any other discount codes....rates for August are over $300 for 8 9 days!!!

Has anyone had experience using their point to rent and was it a good experience??

Thanks!

I checked into doing this and researched on mousesavers.com and found out why this isn't a good idea. Yes, you can't use other discounts so they jack up the rate. Even the "be my guest" disney dining reward is $50 for 10,000 points instead of the normal $100 for 10,000.

I did this on my February trip. NEVER AGAIN!! :sad2: I rented from Hertz since we needed a large SUV and they were the only comapny that had it available(their rates were very high and would never use them again). I managed to use some codes to get the rate down. When I went to book it over the phone Hertz's computer was not set up to use the AMEX point certificate. :scared1: :scared1: Now I hadn't ordered my certificates from AMex yet as you shouldn't do that unless you are sure that they would be accepted. I was told by the person booking that I should go ahead and order them and to call a week before my trip and see if it accepts them. Being the neurotic :crazy2: planner that I am I tried to explain to the person that I need to have this finalized today. She assured me that there would be no problem using the certificates they have a system wide problem at the time that was not allowing to put the certifcate codes in. If at the time I called they were still not able to do that. I will not have a problem just giving them to the counter rep at MCO. Oh and ....I was getting a triple A discount as well...the woman told me that I could combine the codes.

This should have been my first clue that I was getting wrong information. To make a long story short. I was quoted three different prices I ordered my AMex certificates and they were accepted.

Here is the kicker when I went to MCO counter they looked at me like I had 3 heads when I presented the certificates and then they proceeded to tell me that the reservatiopn should not have been booked that way with the AAA discount and AMEX certificates. ...you know they are probably right but that is what they quoted me. She said she would have to rebook and it came out $300 more....imagine my surprise :earseek: :earseek: :earseek: . Being the neurotic planner that I am I had every persons name, date and time I spoke to including their id#'s. SO that covered me but I wasted a ton of time at that counter. Needles to say it was still $50 more than the original price quoted but I was tired of arguing  the kids were getting unruley and I quite frankly wanted to see the mouse ::MickeyMo . So I gave in and knew I could resolve it by mail.

When we returned the car my brother check us in and I noticed the slip was $150 more than what I was quoted at the counter. I was fuming.  ..and they immeadiately corrected it.

So in short I would never use the certificates for rental cars and yes I did complain to Hertz customer service and received $100 certificate (can be used like cash No restrictions) from Hertz Customer service. Which I will be using for my South Florida trip in July. :dancer:

I figured it wouldn't be! What is the disney dining reward and how do you get it?

I just looked on the Amex site and saw this...good idea.

Another thought would be to just use 20,000 points and get a $100 travelers check and book a car with discounts...should be able to get it close to $100...would be well worth it.

That is what screwed up our rental. You would assume that $100 certificate is like cash but they don't take it that way. There are certain codes that they put in and you can't get other discounts with it.

Not even with a travelers check??? I guess it would be easier to just book on a credit card and use the travelers check somewhere else at Disney.

I've rented a car several times (both at Disney, and at other locales) using the AmEx certificates. It was better when there were more companies participating - as of this year, it's only Hertz, Avis, and Enterprise.

Hands' down, I have found that Avis gives the best deals - the rate I've gotten with all of the AmEx codes has always beaten the other AWD/coupon codes I try. I got 8-day rentals in both Orlando and Kauai in the last few months for about $150, inclusive of all taxes. I've been very pleased.

Ooopss!! My mistake I didn't see the word "travlers check". I guess I am still traumatized by Hertz from my February trip. I would think the travlers checks would be fine ...except that you would have to go inside and hand them in at the time of rental. I like to just hop in my vehicle and off we go. :moped:

I initially booked these in January for a trip to Orlando in April, and a trip to Kauai in June. The rates then went down further in late March for both, so I canceled and rebooked them. I'd keep checking...

Hi! I have rented through Hertz using my Amex rewards points certificates...didn't have any problem. We are currently using them again for our upcoming disney trip and I hope we'll have no problems. We have used our points alot over the years... I got $2200.00 in Home Depot gift cards last year and used them toward my kitchen cabinets. :flower:

Can the be my guest dining card be used at Disney restaurants?

Yes - I used one in April that covered my meal both at the California Grill, and at Hollywood Brown Derby. Never was even asked what it was - the servers knew exactly how to process them. Worked great!

Thanks! I just called and redeemed enough points for $200.00 in be my guest cards. Woohoo! Between that, the $200.00 I rolled in change and the $350.00 credit Disney owes me, I think We're ahead on the food aspect for the week! :flower:

What is the be my guest card? Is it throught AMEX? Can I use Amex points to get one? Would love to know since I have over 250,00 Amex reward points.

Yes, it is available through the Membership Rewards program - under "Dining", or just do a search for "be my guest" on their website.

The exchange isn't as good as other retail gift certificates - where you'd normally get $100 for each 10,000 pts. redeemed, this program is basically double that. However if you have a ton of points and don't know where to use them, this is an option. I liked the flexibility of them - and since I stay on Disney property and thus can't use hotel rewards there, I like having SOMETHING paid for with my AmEx points.

Exactly! I saved points for years for a BIG Disney vacation only to have Disney drop out of the Amex program. So, I have since used my points for everything from car rentals, to hotels, to home depot, to Pottery barn, to now Be My Guest cards. :flower:
