Has anyone tried the sugar free desserts on the Fantasy?

To me, the phrase "sugar free dessert" is just a contradiction generally speaking but I am trying to eat less sugar these days. On past cruises, I have never even given the sugar free selections a second look but now I am curious. Anyone who has tried them have an opinion? Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Kathy

I only get the sugar free desserts and I think they are quite good. I can only remember 2 specifically to speak to, some lemon thing and then a chocolate thing. Not real descriptive I know, but I do remember them being really good.

I think DCL has done a really good job in providing healthy options. We don't find it difficult to eat well on the cruise.

We were on the 8/30 Fantasy cruise and I also got the sugar free dessert two nights. I thought it was good and couldn't tell any difference. I also had something chocolate (mousse with caramel I think) and can't remember what else but I would recommend them.

We've only been on the Wonder but I'm sure the dessert recipes are the same.

My husband has had the sugar free desserts and has enjoyed them. There's a nice variety of them at supper meals.

Just an aside - sugar free doesn't automatically equate to low calorie! Probably better than not but in my experience of reading labels its amazing what sounds healthy or better is not exactly...

It would be great if anyone actually has nutrition information on these.

I'd rather have a few bites of dessert made with real sugar than an entire dessert made with stuff created in a chemical lab.

Sugar free does not always equate to being healthy.

Agreed! But i guess in some cases where a person cannot have sugar for diabetic or other reasons these are ok options.

I have the No Sugar Added desserts on the Fantasy all the time. They are very good. And, they are no sugar added, not sugar free.

I tried a no sugar added chocolate pudding/mousse dessert and it was really good!!!

We had a few of these on the Magic and they were really good. It's important to note as someone has already said they are No Added Sugar not no sugar. This is better than nothing. I have no evidence other than taste but I by using real ingredients that are sweet such as fruit, chocolate etc they also avoid the need for any artificial sweeteners too. The MDR hosts would be happy to confirm this with the kitchen though should anyone have any concerns.

I am sugar-free by choice and had SF desserts each night on the Wonder. They were very good!

And I agree with PP who said SF does not equal low calorie or even necessarily "healthy", just "no added sugar" :rotfl2:

I have had type 1 diabetes for over 40 years and I hardly EVER eat ANYTHING sugar free. The chemicals are awful!!

I much rather just have a few spoonfulls of something or fork fulls and let my DH finish it then eat sugar free stuff.

Diabetics can eat regular desserts, maybe not as much or if they do, they just need to take more insulin to cover the carbs.

Carb counting is how you keep your blood sugars under better control, it's not really about the sugar, it's about the carbs.

Sometimes the 'no sugar added' choice is more appealing than the regular dessert.

Please don't judge. I can't eat any sugar at all, not even from fruit. I only get a sweet treat about once every 2-3 months, and it has to be artificially sweetened or I can't eat it. I understand that sugar free doesn't equal healthy, but neither does a sugar-laden dessert. If you were in my situation I'd bet you would want a little splurge once in a while, too.

aprilchem - If you can not eat any sugar at all, even from fruit, then it may be wise to avoid even DCL's "No Sugar Added" desserts because they are exactly that - no sugar added - and are NOT sugar free. Sometimes they are additionally sweetened by those (dreaded by some of us) artificial sweeteners, but other than ice cream or mousse, they get much of their sweetness from fruit.

I second this! Definitely sugar in them, just no sugar added.

Thanks for all the responses! I didn't intend for a debate to ensue. All of us have different needs and dietary concerns. Just wanted to know if the "sugar free" options were yummy...:confused3

See what happens?? :) In all seriousness, i think this was a "healthy" thread - everyone has good points and experience. I for one could do with less sugar, and as PP stated sometimes sugar is not even necessarily the best choice. As usual, everything really comes down to moderation - just a couple bites of whatever should be no harm done :)
