Has anyone transformed an unfinished attic into a bedroom?

I'm thinking about it, and wondering if it's an idea worth pursuing.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

No, I have never done this, however, one of my niece's bedrooms is in a converted attic.

While there is not doubt in my mind that your local building inspectors would have some opinions about this topic - I have a couple of comments...from a safety perspective - make sure that there are 2 ways out of the room in the attic. My niece only has the stairway to get out. There is also a window in her room - but it is a long way to the ground IMHO. My other thought about her room is I don't think it is properly vented. In the summer, as the heat rises in your house - the heat just "hangs" in her room. Attics are generally hot miserable places in the summer - her room is no exception to that.

We converted our attic a few years ago. It is now my son's room, and by the way, it's the biggest room in the house! Everyone wants it (including my husband & I) & my other kids are making claim to it when he eventually moves out. My husband did all the work himself. It took him about 2 months to finish. The only thing he didn't have to do was the insulation because it was already in there. There is only 1 exit, the stairs leading up. Our second floor only has the stairs also as an exit, but I think it's a good idea to get the emergency roll-down fire ladders. That's something I'm going to look into to buy for all of the bedrooms above the 1st floor.

It is true about the stuffiness in the attic. We avoid this by leaving the top of a window open all the time. It works fine.

Good luck with your attic! :)

We looked into it a couple of years ago when we needed to add another bedroom. Our attic wouldn't meet Code standards for minimum ceiling height.

We ended up refinishing 1/2 the basement instead.

dad-burn-it 6_time_momma.......!

I was gonna post that!!!

no, but I rented an unfinished attic bedroom in college

the roof leaked...but it was cheap

Sort of......We added a second floor to our house and went with a ten pitch roof (steeper, more head room) and plan to use the attic as a rec-room maybe with a small pool table, stools and tv. We added a window and the room will be cooled with the central Ac we had installed. All of the finished work will have to done after the town building inspector leaves.....even though they all know what us homeowners are up to!:bounce:
