Has anyone taken an Alaska Cruise?

We're sailing on Princess from Anchorage (Whittier) to Vancouver the first week of August. We're working on booking our excursions and are very excited!

Unfortunately, the excursions can be very expen$$$ive so we are only doing one big one - in Skagway, we'll do a rail/bus trip with dog sledding. In our other ports - Juneau and Ketchikan - we'll do less expensive things, but I'm sure it will still be fun. :)

We're thinking if we really love it, we'll plan a dream cruise in a couple of years and save up for the helicopter tours, etc.

Try to do the helicopter/dog sledding excursion to the glacier, it was great!!!!

No, but I bet it would be the trip of a lifetime!! Doubt that's in the future for us.

However, I know of someone who was able to finance a 7 day trip there quite a few years ago. You'll never guess what she sold to pay the way.....several original Ty Beanie Baby bears with the old face. As I recall she even had enough left over for spending money. How's that for a super trip???? We should be so lucky!

I took a southbound Alaskan cruise from Seward to Vancouver on Celebrity Cruise Lines ("Horizon" was the ship). Our ports of call were Juneau, Sitka, Skagway, and Ketchikan.

We did take the train at Skagway, and I highly recommend it. The scenery was spectacular!

Other things we enjoyed - trip to Mendenhall Glacier while in Juneau, panning for gold at Skagway, a self-guided walk around scenic Sitka, taking the tram up the side of Mt. Roberts (at Juneau, I think). We did a couple other excursions, but I can't remember what they were.

I'd love to go back to Alaska. One thing I regret is that we did not purchase the trip extension which would have taken us from Anchorage to Mt. McKinley. At the time, it was just more than the budget would bear. But now I wish we could have found a way to make it work.

That sounds fabulous, but at $450-500 per person, it's just not in the budget this trip - especially since we have 4 people! But it'll definitely go on the list for the next time. :)

Hmmmmm...now I know I don't have any of the old face beanies, but I do have some of the old international ones somewhere...wonder if they are worth any $$???

we went on an alaskan cruise in August 2004 with our extended family (17 people!). we had a fantastic time. it was absolutely gorgeous up there, especially seeing the glaciers! we took the sapphire princess out of seattle and stopped in ketchikan, juneau, skagway, and victoria, bc. i would definitely do it again in a heartbeat. it was colder than i expected for august, but i really only needed a heavy coat the morning we woke up to pass by the glaciers. it was foggy, misty and cold, but it was also 6 am. haha.
