I'm actually an activist with the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition (MTPC). I know the Dis is supposed to be politics-free, but as Harvey Milk said; "It's more than an issue it's our lives we're fighting for." Basically, the opposition is framing the transgender civil rights bill as the "bathroom bill" because of just one part, equal access to public accommodation. For example, they do not see me as a transgender woman but only as a man, and thus me being in the women's bathroom is an assault on women and girls. When in reality, it is I and other trans folk whose lives are at risk just to go to the bathroom. The bill is about so much more, protection from discrimination in housing, employment, education, and including transgender under hate crimes laws.
The 'bathroom bill' tactic has already worked for pro-hate groups, a similar bill in New Hampshire was shot down last month by the same legislature that approved gay marriage there.
I think I may be the only transgender person on this board, and I don't post much because I've found this board to be transphobic at times, but please do what you can to support this bill, and similar ones in your own state as only 13 states have transgender-specific laws, and on the national level, ENDA is being reintroduced as transgender inclusive. If you live in Mass, check out masstpc.org (MTPC's website) for more info, we have a hearing next week!
