Has anyone purchased the insurance they always mention at booking?

I know they send something in the mail too with the confirmation. I was just curious if other have tried it, is it expensive? Would it cover the cost of the points you booked? Thanks

me too!! :) We have a cruise planned in Oct 09 with points and we are still on the fence about the insurance. ;)

There are 3 separate coverages that you can buy. One covers the loss of your points if you have to cancel. One covers your air travel. And a third covers medical expenses.

I don't have the paperwork here at work, so I'm trying to remember costs and coverages. This is just a swag at it...

The points coverage is limited, so it wouldn't reimburse you for the full value of your points if you loose them. It pays about $5 per point. I can't remember exactly how much the coverage costs -- I think I spent a little over $100 for our two week trip this summer. The cost is based on the number of points used for the booking.

The air fare coverage is a flat fee per person. I think it was $50 each. That covers tickets up to $300 each.

The medical coverage is a fee-per-person-per-day.

The only reason we bought it this year is because I don't have a signed leave slip from my supervisor at work. We have a major systems upgrade planned for this fall, and she wasn't comfortable approving me to be off until we get closer to the summer. That's hard to plan around when you need to book at 11 months to get the room you want. Unfortunately, we're traveling at the end of our use year, so it'll come down to take the trip or loose the points. Normally, I don't think the insurance is worth the cost. In this case, I figured it might be. I got the points and airfare coverages.

Just curious if there are certain conditions that have to be met ie. if you just cancel do you qualify or does it link to things like sickness of traveling person or family member who is not traveling, death in family, weather etc? If points go into holding then I would assume you do not get reimbursed since you have not technically lost them until you are unable to use them within the booking guidelines. Have always just thrown the brochure away but as one gets older it may make sense on occasion to get the insurance.

Oh I want to know that too.

I'm actually curious to hear if anyone's ever had an actual experience filing a claim, myself. I recall reading a post at one time that the burdeon of proof is on you to show that your vacation was a total loss. I'm not sure what the actual requirements are. I guess I should have read that book of tiny print they sent me.

I would definitely get it for the cruise. Not resort stays though. With the cruise, if you miss the boat, you've missed the boat.

With resort stays you can arrive late or work out arriving a day or two late. Typically, pays about $5 per point. In 10 years we came close once to having to arrive a day late, but ended up working that out.

Would you get it for a 3 nite cruise? When booking on pts., the airfare insurance isn't covered unless you book your airfare thru MS. I was thinking of just getting the additional medical. Will the pts. insurance cover if you have to stay out to sea due to hurricanes, and if you have to stay in a hotel for a night due to storms, etc.?
