Has anyone made their own autograph book?

Hi!

In 1997, during our first WDW trip, I had the characters sign every other page in the regular 4 x 6" Disney Autograph Books that are sold at the parks and then I pasted the picture of my sons with that character on the opposite page. We filled about 3/4 of the book and it was really neat when finished. Unfortunately, I found that the binding wasn't made for this purpose and it fell apart! :(

We went back in 2000 and 2002 using the same standard Disney Autograph books, but didn't attempt adding pictures.

In preparation of our May, 2003 trip I knew I had to do something different. We had this broken autograph/picture book & several autograph books.

I had thought about using the 7" x 7" CM books, but with all of the pictures of my sons with the characters over the years the decision would have to be made as to which ONE picture to choose?? I discussed it with dh and decided to go with the 8-1/2" x 11" CM album. I could insert pages and fill with more, as needed.

I decided to begin with Mickey (of course! :) and the other Disney classic characters and then sorted my photos according to movie title so that Aladdin & Jasmine, Snow White & Dopey, etc. could all be together! Putting them in alphabetical order by movie title made it a lot easier to find who we needed quickly. I went through ALL of my pictures of our family with the characters and chose 1 of each character from every trip. I inserted several BLACK CM pages at Star Wars in preparation for the Star Wars characters we anticipated meeting during the first 2 Star Wars Weekends in May, 2003.

Well, it's been 3 trips since putting our book (now books!) together & we don't regret doing it for a second!! :)

I take apart the album, print out a cover picture of our family with all of our resort dates, etc. (in case our book is misplaced!). I then place it on the front cover and get out zip-loc baggies to cover the front & back. I pull out the removable binding & make my own out of construction paper covered by clear packing tape. This protects our album during meals, rain, etc.

On our first two trips with it I even used portrait pages for the back in which I printed our daily itinerary (one for each day). That's where I would put all of our receipts, Magical Moments Certificates, etc., so that they don't get lost, mangled, etc.

This past May it was about 5" thick. This time I even took my CM pens, placed them in their own zip-loc baggie & taped it directly to the album! (In the past I had them in my fanny pack, which was cumbersome). This is also where I keep my list of all the characters that we still need autographs for or still need to meet! :)

Last week I finally got our character pictures developed from our May, 2005 trip. There were 14 of us on this adventure, allowing for lots of photo opportunities.

Now we officially have TWO autograph books to carry along on our next trip! We are leaving this Thursday & will arrive at ASMo on Saturday, 8/20!!

In the front of our album I've put a family picture from every year, including resort details. I have a picture of my brother & I at the breezeway between Adventureland & Liberty Square from 1972-1973??

We were told that Mickey & Minnie have hundreds of different outfits that they appear in!! Sooooo, dh (yes, dh!) decided that we should include ALL pictures of the characters in different autographs! :) We have the following 16 different pictures of Mickey: Animal Kingdom (safari-2003), Mission Space (2005), Sorceror (MGM-Mickey Ave-2004), Classic/Yellow Bow Tie (1992), Classic/Red Bow Tie (Main St. Parade - not with family-1972/73), Farmer (Garden Grill-2000), Caribbean (Castaway Cay-2005), Dinosaur (Donald's Breakfastosaurus-2002), Captain (DCL-2005), Tailor (Fantasmic - not with family), Chef (Chef Mickey's-2004), Captain (Fulton's Crab House-1997), Polynesian (O'Hanas-2003), Black Tux/Top Hat (special picture received from CM in 2004), DSU (Disney Sea University-DCL - not with family-2005), and Davy Crockett (Halloween costume at Camp Minnie-Mickey -2004 was told by a CM that every 1/2 hour when he & Minnie would go in for a break, they would come out in a different costume!!! - I wanted to spend our last day getting pics, but dh frowned at that idea. I wonder if dh would want to now, since this whole character outfit search was his idea?? LOL) I think there were a couple different outfits of Mickey that we missed on DCL (pirate & formal), but we're planning on another cruise in a few years.

You may wonder why we bother to take the album(s) and don't just get the characters to sign 4" x 6" pieces of paper? We absolutely LOVE sharing our album(s) with CM's!!! They adore looking at the pictures from over the past and this year I'm planning on borrowing my sister's Kodak print doc so that I could include family photos with the characters each day!!! Next week will be my family (self, dh & 3 sons-12, 10 & 6) with my parents and 90 year old grandmother (and her first trip to WDW!!!) My children enjoy sharing it with everyone and we have even left it at Guest Relations at different parks during the day (at the end of our trip when we knew we weren't going to meet anyone new).

We have needed a double stroller up to our trip in October, 2004, so that was a great safe place to keep the album (inside a backpack). This past May we purchased a rolling backpack, which worked out great for the autograph book. This year my grandmother will be in a wheelchair, so the backpack will fit nicely on the back of that.

Our oldest son is getting tired of the character hunts (he just turned 12), because he's more interested in rides, rides, rides right now. Our 10 yo will always be my Character Hunt Buddy, though. The boys have also found that there have been special perks with sharing our special treasure, too, though!! :)

We have met 108 Disney characters, 26 Star Wars characters & have yet to meet about 64 different Disney characters (that includes ALL characters - including those who appear in parades, but may not be available for Meet & Greets - but there's always hope!! :)

When we were there in May I was talking with an Entertainment CM who asked me if I had been to MK the day before during the Regis & Kelly taping, because there were 70 different characters out, including DUMBO!!!

Sorry this was so long, but I hope that I gave lots of autograph book ideas!
:)
Deb (Off to do some more packing so that I can relax tomorrow, before leaving on Thursday! - NOT!! LOL)

Of course I had to focus on this post today. I'm heading to WDW soon with my two daughters. At first I wasn't even thinking about autograph books, I mean we've been there before and done that, but now my girls mention wanting to do autographs.

So now I read this post and I'm thinking about picking up some scrapbooks for them to use. One more thing to add to the list of things to do! Ahhhh

I've used the Cm 7x7 Mickey album too and premade the pages with the Disney snap pack. It was very quick!

Our last trip i used the demin 7x7 CM book and it worked great! this trip I'm using the Mickey 7x7 book. the characters love seeing something different and get really creative when they sign it! I kept my album in a plastic zip lock in case of rain and lucky for us there wasn't any. I say go for it my kids lov looking at it and it was fun to come home and add pictures.
Sorry, this will be a bit long. One of these days I'll learn to be brief! :rotfl:

I did the same thing, used the CM Mickey 7x7 sentiments album, that is. The zip-lock bag was wonderful for keeping it safe, too. I used the Magic of Disney Snap Pack to decorate the pages, designating one page for the autograph and the facing page for the photograph. Some of the designs in the Snap Pack had all the charcters on two pages, but I expanded the layouts to two pages for each character (I hope that made sense!).

I used the United Kingdom Capital & Countryside sticker pack for the Mary Poppins page, and she was so surprised to see it! She said that no one had ever made a page for her before. (I must admit that I almost cried when I saw her -- she's always been my favorite. Of course, I didn't tell DH. He wouldn't have understood!)

I'll use the Japan Celebrations for Mulan (yes, I know that she's Chinese!), and other CM stickers for the other characters not included in the snap pack. (I'm a CMC and I only use CM products, BTW.)

I'll post the pages once I have the album done. We went to WDW in March and I still haven't printed the digital photographs! Shame on me! It may be because I took so many photos during our trip that it will cost a small fortune to print them all. :earboy2:

Yes, it was big to lug around, but the right size for the characters to hold and they did love seeing all the pages . I also brought along extra blank pages, and we saw so many characters that we filled up every one! That was very exciting!

Good luck to everyone who is making an autograph album. It sure is worth it! ::yes::

EK disney,
That book is awesome. Are the autographs right onto the pages? I have the CM 7x7 albums for my two kids to use and now that I have ordered them I am afraid of them getting ruined...oh well can't let it ruin the trip!!!!

I'm not EK disney, but here is what I'd do if I did it all over again:

If you are using a 7x7 CM album (which I did), and plan on carring it around with you, put it in a gallon zip-lock bag ot keep it dry and clean AND remove the spine. We left the spines on ours and one got a little munched.

They were a pain to tote around, but not knowing which character we may have come across, I left all the pages in the book and just dealt with it. If you make your pages ahead of time you could also just bring the pages of those characters you may see, or know you are going to see if you're doing a character meal, then reassemble the book later. I'm just too disorganized in spontaneous situations that if the pages were separate, I wouldn't be able to find what I needed!

For our next trip we will just bring separate blank pages for the characters we may see, and have a small clipboard with a pen attached to stablilze the page for signing.

The ones I made were from 6x8 spiral bound books. The characters loved seeing their pages and stitch even drew horns on the picture of Lilo's head! How cool is that. After we got back home I added pictures of the characters with my kids to their pages and then finalized it with page protectors. How I decided which characters to put in and where was by where we might see them in the park ie. toy story characters together, Aladin together with Jasmine and so on. I also found a list on line of which characters are at which parks so I knew which ones to include. I also left some pages decorated but not specified for a character incase of a surprise. Oh yeah, another idea was if I couldn't find a sticker of a certain character I would find a pin of the character on ebay and save it to my computer and then print it out and glue it on. That's legal right? After all, the books not for sale. =P

What type of 6x8 album did you use? Where did you purchase them?
Thanks

New to scrapping...
I got into it because of our upcoming trip and autograph books and now I am hooked!!! Question to the pros - 1st of all I have 2 children - 1 girl/1 boy - I have purchased 6 - yes six 35 page memory books (about the size of a mouse pad - not sure of measurements right now) - this would allow each child basically 100 signatures if needed (didn't want to run out of room if we run into unexpected characters) Initially I planned on pre making them and having the characters sign correct sheets, etc. Is it easier - with a 3 & 4 year old to just have them get 1 autograph per page and then deal with putting together final touches, embellish later on at home with pictures? I'm sure it would be cute to see DD showing Cinderella "her very own page" but not sure of how much time it would take us to sort things out, find the correct page in each childs book with other kids also wanting Cindy's time too. Just wanted to know how you guys do it as I am new to this. I also thought of taking the signatures out of these books to be putting into the scrapbooks I plan on putting together of their whole trip - not just signatures - instead of them having 2 separate books??? Opinions pls???

I plan on getting a spiral bound album about this size at Hobby Lobby. I meant to go last week when they were on sale and completely forgot about it.

They were spiral bound and made from heavy paper card stock. This way I could glue scrapbook paper to them to decorated each page. I bought them at Hobby Lobby for maybe $4.00 each, but I've seen them at other stores too like Meijer and the local scrapbook store.

I started scrapbooking for the same reasons :cool1: I did the have the scrapbook ready and decorated thing and found that we stood in line long enough to have more than enough time to find the right pages. I also tied a ribbon with a charm on the end to mark the right page. We put them in ziplock freezer bags to protect them from rain and water. The only thing my DH complained about was the weight of lugging 2 of them around in his backpack the whole trip. We saw 41 characters, counting all the different dressed Mickeys, Minnies, Donalds and so on. We didn't see Daisy, Jiminy Cricket, Cinderella's Mice, or Brer Rabbit. My kids like having their own "scrapbook" of their trip and I hardly had any work to do on them when we came back so I could work on my own :cheer2:

WOW!! I've joined the t-shirt addiction group and now I think I may have to make an autograph book - no kids in our party though!! It'll encourage me to be brave and get with those characters!!

Thanks for all the great ideas. I am a scrapper too and want to make a special autograph book for my son when we go on out Disney Cruise in April. Thanks again. :cloud9:

For all you still needing to get books, today is the last day of the JoAnn's sale. I got 2 of their 8x8 albums to make into autograph books...one was $4.99 and the other $3.99 :) The refills were also on sale for $2.09 for pack of 10. Great prices!

Last time I used the 6x6 format and loved it! But I ended up having to reduce a few pictures that didn't have space for me to cut off, so this will probably be easier this time. Also, JoAnn doesn't carry the 6x6 and it was easier to get what they had (that was also on sale!) than to search all over town for the 6x6 albums. I used to get them at ACMoore (if you have one of those nearby) but we just moved and don't have one, and I have yet to get to Michael's since my JoAnn's is SO awesome :)

I'd post pics but my new ISP is still blocking me. That reminds me...need to go dump RoadRunner and get Earthlink....
