St. John's Wort has helped a bit. I've found that continual use tends to not be as helpful for me, so I use it only from time to time. The person who told me about it said just the opposite. :confused3

Over the last 2 or so years I've found getting PLENTY of sunlight on a regular basis and taking vitamin D has helped quite a bit. I actually discovered by accident that the D has worked for mild depression.

I've had marginal results with taking a daily multi-vitamin and exercising more.

When I've been in a true depressive funk, I've needed a reliable anti-depressant to bring me out of it.

finding a friend to walk with 3 days a week no matter what the weather has helped me greatly.

I am going to also suggest getting your Vit D level checked. I have a couple of friends that have had depression type symptoms and found their Vit D levels to be extremely low. You could always just add an extra Vit D supplement to your diet if you don't feel like getting a blood draw, and see if that helps.

I used to think I was depressed and I took St johns Wart at the advice of my mother, who was depressed and helped IMMENSLY by that. Only it didn't help me. At all. Come to find out I didn't have depression I have bipolar disorder II, and dr told me STOP taking St johns Wart, people who are depressed can be helped by that but people with bipolar disorder should not take St johns wart, it's bad for them. (I had thought I was depressed because I recognized my depression symptoms but I did not recognize my manic symptoms, leading me to think I was depressed because I thought my depression was the problem and my manic side was normal- everyone around me recognized both my depression and my manic side, but I didn't)

Just wanted to also add to check around and make sure that anything you're thinking of taking won't react with anything you're already taking. Just off the top of my head I know that if you're on a birth control pill you shouldn't take St John's Wort. Be sure that you check the specific medications you're on too, not depression related but I know some birth control pills (Seasonale in particular) shouldn't be taken with acetaminophen or vitamin C, while some other birth control pills you can take them.

The best thing I know of is a high quality fish oil. I take Nordic Natural Ultimate Omega. Also, lots of sunlight and daily exercise helps a lot:).

If you can catch the black thoughts early enough - hit the gym. The endorphins will overcome the moods or you will be tired enough to sleep.

Of course if you are talking about the clinical depression, well it is hard enough getting out of bed to even think about exercising.

For me, exercise, sunshine, and eating healthy makes the difference with me.

I just cannot tolerate any "meds" whether they are natural or prescribed these days.

When I get in one of my black moods I take St. John's Wort and it works really well. Since I started exercising every day I have felt a whole lot better.;)

Vitamin D, getting sunlight every day, exercise. Also getting off wheat and sugar has really helped.

regular exercise helped when I had mild depressive symptoms.

But I was diagnosed with MDD and I am in therapy which has been helping me more than anything else has before.

I think natural remedies are great if it's just mild feelings of depression but once you get into the more severe or more persistent depressive feelings, something more than a natural remedy is probably needed.
