has anyone 'heard' of booze being successfully smuggled on the ship?

Don't have to smuggle it on--DCL allows it. I took 4 bottles of wine in my carry on--no problems. You can take beer and sodas too.

My bottle of rum goes with me! Just remember you CANNOT bring open booze back off the ship so only take what you think you will drink, or leave the rest with your cabin steward;)

... So there I was, coming back from a day in St. Maarten, lugging a case of beer with me. And they (DCL) couldn't care less.

Don't worry about smuggling, kenics, it's perfectly acceptable. Go for it !!

So does it have to be in your carry-on? And stupid question... Is it not wise to put it in my luggage? (carbonated beverages, etc.)

No, it doesn't have to be in your carry-on. Lots of people brought wine for our wine-tasting party carefully packed in their checked bags.

Just use common sense, and remember that airlines and porters are not as careful with your luggage as you are! Be sure to go to a 'BeveragesNMore' store, or someplace like that, and get a styrofoam packing kit for your bottles. Otherwise, prepare for your underwear to smell like chardonnay...

Don't be afraid to just lug it on board... LOTS of people do it, and nobody cares. I have seen (literally) hand carts with cases and cases of beer being wheeled on. Don't be self-conscious about your bottle of Jim Beam or a couple of bottles of Pinot Noir. Enjoy!!!!

Although many people do pack it in their checked luggage, DCL stipulates that you may only bring it onboard in your carryon luggage.

I waited until we got to St. Maarten and bought a bottle. I got a bottle of Tanqueray Gin that sells for $35.00 here for $9.50!!!!!

LOL Fireplug, I agree my Rum goes with me too.

After all the conch coolers and other libations we enjoy onboard, we often don't want to open up a whole bottle of wine to drink on our verandah. Last time we sailed, I brought 2 4-packs of the smaller bottles, wrapped each bottle inside a thick sock or similar item and placed it in a pocket of the shoe holder (just one row across, but we brought 2 holders). We cushioned it well within our suitcase and gave it to the porters with no problem. We traveled by car so there was no question of checking it on the plane, which I would NOT recommend considering the way they throw everything. The smaller bottles are really nice because ig only one person feels like having a glass of wine, the other doesn't feel obligated and you won't spoil a fresh bottle. We brought one pack of red and one white and had just enough for the week.

Yeppers! Me three, leaving tomorrow and hubby and I are debating carrying it on or packing it.

When I was in college -- eons ago -- a friend invited a bunch of us to her father's beach house for July 4th weekend. Being poor and college students, we took along whatever liquor we already had on hand. Halfway there, we started smelling something odd. It grew stronger and stronger until we finally stopped to check it out. A brand-new bottle of tequila that was carefully nestled amongst my clean clothes had mysteriously broken, and all my clothes were soaked. The duffle bag was not tossed or mistreated in any way, so I don't know how it broke. We drove soooo slowly the rest of the way -- we were afraid that if we were stopped, we'd be arrested for drunk driving because of the smell in the car!

The moral: any liquid -- from tequila to shampoo -- MUST be packed in a ziplock bag!
