Has anyone finished a "very unfinished" basement?

I've spent the last few months readying my house for sale - now it looks like we may be staying in it (yay!). Now I need a new project! I've been obsessing over the idea of a basement. We live on a hill and have a HUGE crawlspace. The whole backside of the house is about 12 ft. tall. It is not a basement at all - just dirt etc.

We would need to put in a stairwell, door, windows, electricity, walls, floors - the whole ball of wax. Does anyone know if this kind of thing is even possible?

I've seen them do it on one of those home shows, but I imagine it would be expensive. It would be nice to have all that space if you can do it!

Find a contractor you trust and have him/her give you an estimate. Then find another contractor and have them give you an estimate. See if they are in the same ballpark

Thanks for the replies! I plan on getting estimates and talking to a friend who does space planning about where to locate the stairwell. I was just wondering if anyone here had done anything similar and how big a mess it all was!
