Has anyone ever worked as a toll collector?

What was it like?

Any funny stories?

Um - if, by chance, anyone ever worked on one of the mass pike tollbooths maybe 8-10 years ago and ever had a little kid with red hair pay the toll from the back seat with candy corn shoved up his nose...that's my younger brother....sorry!

That was YOUR brother!?!?!  :p :hyper:

My friend's sister married a guy she met at the toll booth during her daily commute. I can never figure out how the relationship ever progressed from "guy who takes your change" to "guy who asks you out and you say yes", no matter how many times you go through his booth!

I've never worked as a toll booth operator, but I've often wondered how they keep their sanity when people pull up to the toll booth when exiting the NJ Turnpike and ask "How much?" when it's printed right on the ticket. Thank heavens for EZPass.

A woman I used to work with had a DH who did and she would talk about all sorts of people he saw. Most of the strange ones were people (mostly guys) who would drive through with no pants on.

My son-in-law's Dad started his career with the Thruway as a toll collector.. Worked his way up to a Senior Dispatcher and retired with a VERY nice pension and awesome benefits!!

If I had that job, I would have a back up line, cause I would be talking to people that would be coming thru.

I was thinking that it could be real boring just standing there.
(no offense to anyone).

And I am sure many people blame them for backups and tarffic and such

There was someone in my parents community that was a toll collector at one of the PA/NJ bridges. (Can't remember which one, and it doesnt really matter)

This person got an ingenious idea of putting a cup near where you throw the change in, so the toll collector could "reward themselves". Well, this person got caught. His intake on what was counted didn't match to how many cars went through the bridge.

It started so innocnet like maybe a few dollars a day, and it eventually was thousands of dollars!

Anyway this person got arrested

I thought that I'd read in Newsweek that they make around $50K-$60K a year...this was a couple of years ago.

I'm kind of curious too as to what it's like...

I wonder if they can just be on hands-free phones all day long like so many cab drivers these days?

when I was in college I had a summer job down at the beach. sometimes I worked the toll booths, collecting the parking fees. we were allowed to have radios in our booths, so it wasn't too bad.

I never worked as one, but I had a major crush on this toll collector when I was about 18. I cannot tell you how many quarters changed hand that summer:D
