Has anyone ever seen a male cat do this???

Have you ever known a male cat to be "maternal"???

We got two kitties this past summer. One was supposed to be a male but dh and I just never seemed to see any male parts that we are aware of. So we kind of figured that the store made a mistake and they were both female. O.K....well back the first week of April I found 6 baby kittens in our bedroom so after the initial shock we decided that Tigger really IS a boy!!!!(Believe me we were SHOCKED!!!)

Fast forward to a few weeks down the road when I move the kittens into the "cat area"of the house(food,water,litterbox) and Tigger has been so loving and gentle to the kittens.My mom told me to be careful that the Tom cat sometimes kills the babies so I kept a watchful eye on him. He bathes them,comes running if he hears them meow, Showed them how to use the litterbox, when they were first starting to walk if he felt they were getting too far away he would very gently take his paw and guide them back into their box. He really amazes me!!1 I have never heard of the male cat doing this.

Yup. After the initial "you're new to my territory" growls from Blaze, he treated both Skye and Sienna very much like a mother when they were young. He doesn't do it as much any more, though.

Several years ago I had a young male cat (9-12 months) and then I got a 6 week old female kitten. The male adopted the female and she would try to nurse on him. They remained inseparable for the rest of their lives.

Years ago we had a male cat (also Tigger) and we brought in two unrelated kittens. Once they all got aquainted and settled in, Tigger took care of them as if he was their mother. He even let them "pretend" nurse.

We now have two cats that are 16 months old (brothers) and the smallest is still the "runt." We believe they were taken from their mother too soon and the smallest still crawls up into my wife's armpit and "nurses" every evening.

Our male cats are very sweet...the girls are another story

Our male cat, Rascal, has a stuffed alligator that he carries around, bathes, loves on and sleeps with. So I can see him doing that to a kitten if we brought one home.

Our male cat got a kitten companion when he was 7 years old and he did mother him. They are now 14 and 7 and they are very loving to one another. I should mention that both cats are neutered males.

I've got a female cat, Yoda - who wouldn't mother her OWN if she had any. She hates all other living things. (except me and hubby, of course)

But my (dearly departed) male cat loved everybody, everything. Wouldn't hurt a fly.

Wow, what a nice thread. Very sweet stories...too cute about "Rascal." I don't have a story to add, unless my big dog "Mikey," who thinks he is "the" man of the house, counts.

My only experiences with male cats haven't been great. One named "Pirate" {now there's a clue} who belonged to a family I babysat for, sprayed the living room one morning before school. yuck! The the other male cat, who was on the very well fed side, would disappear for a few days at a time, and return to sleep it off before heading back out. Then I saw a TV show about a male "barn cat" who...not nice... but I haven't looked at them quite the same since. So it was truly a pleasure to read all these stories! Thanks for sharing.

Ummm...how would one find a nurturing male cat like these? I sure would love one.
