DH mentioned he would rather fly into Melbourne than Orlando. Anyone do this? What transportation options did you use? Where did you stay if you came in day before? Personally I'd rather fly to Orlando - stay at the Airport Hyatt and take DCL bus to terminal. But does he ever listen to me

Melbourne is a decent regional airport. Definitely less crowded than MCO. You could rent a car there and return it at the Radisson at Cape Canaveral just like if you did that from MCO. I have some info about one-way car rentals at my web site...

If you didn't want to rent a car, you could hire a shuttle service that's based out of the Space Coast area (such as www.artsshuttle.com) and stay at the Radisson. The Radisson has a courtesy shuttle to the port in the morning.

Or you could stay at a couple other hotels, booking a cruise package that includes taxi vouchers for the trip to the port.

I have a summary of Space Coast lodging options at my web site...

Oh, by the way, here's the URL for the Melbourne airport...

...and here's the URL for MCO...

You could fly into MLB. It is closer to the port. (aprox 25mi)
The only problem is there is very limited service. If you are flying out of NJ you could take CO to Tampa then you would have to connect to MLB. Your other option would be into ATL and connect to MLB. I believe CO and DL are the only major airlines that fly there. You would save time just flying into MCO and driving. Also,
the rates into MCO are a bit lower $10-$20 on average depending on your dates of travel. Hope this helps!

On our last trip into Disney we inadvertently ended up in Melbourne. Bad weather cancelled the flight from Newark to Orlando through Atlanta. We had to take Amtrak to Philadelphia and catch a flight the next morning to Melbourne and then drive to Orlando. Go there about 24 hours after we left our house :(. DH liked the Melbourne airport.

I hadn't thought of staying at the port that night. I'll check into that.

Thanks

We flew into Melbourne for our spring break cruise -- we booked too late to get decent fares into Orlando and saved quite a bit of $$. We used a local shuttle service to get to Port Canaveral. I was surprised as we left the airport to see a DCL bus pull away. A CM on the ship said that if Disney had to route people to Melbourne then DCL would provide transfers from that airport. If you fly into Melbourne, it might be worth checking with DCL to see if they have a transfer available. Our local service was fine, but it looked as though the bus headed west to catch I95 north. Our driver took A1A most of the way, scenic in spots, but very slow due to road construction.
