I was just browsing, and I came across a deal on an emerald ring that seemed too good to be true. Well, I bid on it, and won the auction. If in fact this ring is exactly as stated, then I got an incredible deal. If not, I guess that is where the ebay buyer protection comes in.

It states that the ring is 14K solid white gold, with a 3.72 ct. natural emerald and 0.36 carats of smaller diamonds. I only paid $11.25 (there was no reserve) plus $13.99 for shipping and insurance.

The guy had 100% positive feedback, but he had only sold 2 items before. I am really second guessing myself, but I guess worst case scenario I am only out $25 or so.

Like you say, you'll only be out $25. If that's real the seller is a fool.

You'll have to tell us how it works out. It almost makes you wonder if the person selling accidentally didn't set up a minimum or had much more faith in it going higher. Good luck!

That's what I am trying to figure out. Why would the seller not set up a reserve? Either it was a mistake, or he really is a fool.

The other thing that crossed my mind is that if it is indeed 14k solid gold like the listing says it is, the gold alone is worth much more than I paid, not even taking the stones into consideration.

The seller is from China, and I got an email that the item was shipped yesterday. It was shipped airmail from Hong Kong, and it says it should arrive in 14-25 days.

I would suggest asking for a tracking number. Make sure all correspondence goes through eBay and not by direct e-mail; this will help for a PayPal claim. Also, when yoiu get it, I would suggest immediately going to a real jewelry store to have it checked out.

I once got caught on this one ...they sometimes plate in Gold. So basically there is a coating of 14K gold but actually the whole thing isn't gold. But the buyer did take it back as it was not stated correctly (thank goodness).

But I agree with Chesire Figment get it checked out.

I got a Franklin Mint ring in an Ebay auction once; paid about $300. The seller had lots of jewelry for sale and good feedback or I wouldn't have done it.

The buyer said he does accept refunds if you notify him within 7 days of receiving it. He won't refund shipping though, and $14 out of the $25 was shipping. Oh well, not a tragedy if it doesn't turn out to be real. :)

Nowadays, a good piece of costume jewelry costs $25. If you like it, it might be worth keeping anyways for that price. :)

If you paid by paypal and the item isn't as described then you can file a claim with paypal and you will receive your purchase price AND your original shipping price back but you have to pay return shipping with some sort of proof of delivery. Once you can prove the package was received back then paypal will refund the money to your account. The seller can SAY he doesn't refund the shipping but paypal will refund it to you anyway.

That's good to know!

I love their gold & gemstone jewelry & have quite a few nice pieces. Problem is I don't wear them!

I'd be rather leery of the piece unless one of his photos showed the inside of the ring with 14K plainly showing. I'd also be leery of a natural emerald of that karat weight & no reserve. That said, though, maybe seller was hoping price would go up. You might want to do as pp's have said--go to your local jeweler & have them check it.

If you really like the ring when it comes & turns out not to be as described, you can either file a claim through ebay or keep it & enjoy. Luckily you wouldn't be out that much $$ since costume pieces can cost that much.

Please post what you find out?

I bought a beautiful pair of peridot/aquamarine/and some kind of yellow stone earrings in gold from Ebay ( seller was in China ). I've never actually had them checked, but I can tell you, they're pretty and they don't make my ears itch and they haven't tarnished. For the teeny amount I payed for them, I'm quite happy.
