Hi there, of course we are about to travel to Disney in the next 38 days & my mother has come down with a new diagnosis that is not considered to be stable & controlled so she won't have coverage for it.

We are applying to Medipac for her insurance to be underwritten to include her pre-existing condition but we won't know for 10 business days if they will cover her or how much it will cost.

Has anyone done this before?

I work for two insurance and financial planners. One is a broker for travel insurance. We have many clients (seniors, in particular) with pre-existing conditions who travel southward during the winter. Premiums are much more expensive, mind you, but at least we can usually get them covered for their trip.

I would strongly suggest, in a case like your mom's, that you purchase her travel insurance through a broker. Then you have an advocate working for you in the event that a claim must be made.

Good luck :goodvibes . I hope your mom gets feeling better!

Do you know on average how much more expensive? She has just been diagnosed with pre-diabetes that will be controlled thru diet. No meds.

It would be hard to even venture a guess as to how much the premium would increase. So many factors are taken into consideration.....the length of the trip, the type of illness, the age of the traveller, etc.

Definitely worth the cost, though, whatever it happens to be........we just heard this week of a local gentleman who went on vacation without disclosing a pre-existing condition. He had serious health problems while away, and incurred over $100,000 in medical costs. The insurer refused to pay, based on his non-disclosure when the application was submitted. The family will be financially ruined.

Yes I've heard of horrible stories like that, that's why we're applying for the underwritten portion. Hopefully they'll cover her. We'll find out by the end of the month hopefully. My mom has an appointment with the dietician on Wednesday so we'll know everything by then.

Good luck!!! Let us know how your mom makes out. :goodvibes

I posted about this a while back and did a lot of research. The best option I found was a company called "Travel Underwriters". Not sure if I'm allowed to post a link? If you google Travel Underwriters medical insurance it will come up.

Their stability period is 7 days prior to travel as long as you doctor says you are fit for travel.

I don't think the premium was too bad either. I think about $10/day if I recall.

Their plan doesn't apply to my parents because of their age. Their 7 day stability period only applies to people under 59 years of age & my parents are over that. We faxed in her application to Medipac for her to be underwritten yesterday so just wanting to hear back from them. Said it should take 10 business days.
