Considering doing the Tulum Ruins tour on our Magic cruise 7/3. It does seem like an awful long excursion 7 - 7.5 hours. Is this exhausting in the July heat? Please tell me anything you can about this excursion :)

Thank you!

I took this excursion about 9 years ago in August through another cruise line. My dh was facinated by the ruins, but it was sweltering hot! There is a very small beach area where I and most of the other members of our tour went to cool off. My dh stuck it out and throughly enjoyed it. I don't know if anything has changed since then, so hopefully someone who has recently taken this tour through DCL can give more updated info.:sunny:

We did the ruins also, about 7 years ago on another line. It's hot, but an amazing expierence, well worth the time.
I don't feel there is really much else to do (besides some other excursions) when in Cozumel.
How often do you get to Mexico? I think it's a worthwhile expierence.
Have Fun !!

I also did a Tulum tour but while we were staying in Cancun about 7 years ago. It was in the beginning of April and it was HOT! The little beach area at the ruins is nice but not nearly big enough for the amount of people that were there that day. I do agree that there isn't much to do while in Cozumel but I wouldn't waste 7.5 hours on this tour if I was on DCL. I would save it for a trip to Cancun or the Quinta Roo area to go on the excursion because it is usually paired up when done through a resort with one of the ecological parks as a package. The travel time for the excursion from Cozumel is what would take most of the time anyway.

It is an interesting tour but IMO in the middle of July it would be just too hot.

I did it with DCL last year. DH and I were fascinated with the ruins, but our "kids" (18 and 19) were bored. It is very hot so please be sure to bring water. At least half of the excursion time will be spent "traveling". The boat ride to the mainland was not pleasant....it was very choppy and the engines were loud. Alot of people looked queasey on the return trip. After the boat ride you have a short walk through Playa del Carmen to catch the bus for Cozumel. The bus trip there is over an hour and includes the obligatory "souvenir stop". After the tour of the ruins you will have about 45 minutes to enjoy the beach (wear your bathing suit as I can't remember what the facilities are like) Lunch is served when you get back on the bus and by that time you will be famished! We got packaged Subway sandwiches w/soda or beer...included chips and some sort of dessert. Nothing fancy but we were all starved and enjoyed it. No shopping stop on the way home. At the ruins you could shop if you didn't go to the beach. One of the most interesting things was seeing those Mexican aerialists that hang from high poles (they were once on Amazing Race)....that was truly amazing and my kids loved that part. All in all, it was definitely worth it as long as you prepare yourself for roughing it a little.

The ferry ride to the mainland is air conditioned and the bus ride is air conditioned. Do take water (two water bottles is good if you don't have a carrying refillable water bottle). They do sell soda and bottled water on the ferry. We did this last July and it was hot - around 105 is the norm but we had a nice breeze so the temp was a bit lower. We didn't have a lot of time at the beach and it's very far down (if that bothers anyone in your party). There is no place to change.

If the don't include it in your ticket (they did with ours) it is encouraged to take the tram from where they drop you off to where you actually go to the ruins (especially in the summer heat). You also will probably only have enough time to go to the bathroom before you get back on the bus (if you can find it) but allow enough time in case you need to go. It does cost to use the bathroom there - like $2 I think.

It was a great experience and I'm so glad we went. I was very skeptical about it but I would do it again.

We just got back from visiting Mexico 3 weeks ago. We did the tour. It was boring for me only because attention span is VERY short. My husband really enjoyed himself.
The bathrooms were HORRIBLE!!! They don't want you to flush the toilet paper, they want you to put it in the trash can. I guess you can imagine how it smelled. There was a terrible smell (like many people uses the bathroom outside) on the walk up to the site. Once you are up there, it is really pretty. You are right on the water, so there is a cool breeze. If you have a guide, you will learn alot if you interested in history.

Thanks for all the great responses! I am going to think about it a bit more. I'll leave this decision up to my DH :)
