Has anyone done Tulum ruins on their own?

Hi all,
We're sailing on the Magic Jan 29th (OMG - I can't even believe its so close!). DH just decided he would, after all, like to see the ruins on Cozumel, even if it takes all day. DCL excursion to Tulum is already booked and I can't find a private tour online that leaves past 8am. Has anyone ever done the Tulum ruins on their own? I know you have to take a ferry to Playa del Carmen, but then what? Does anyone have any suggestions or know how to arrange a private tour that will fit into the Magic's timefram?

Can't help you with doing Tulum on your own but can give you some information.

We went to Tulum taking the ship's excursion (Princess) a few years back. As I recall, we did take the ferry to Playa Del Carmen as you mentioned. I remember we then walked as a group thru a little town to get to the tour bus. It was not parked right at the dock waiting for you. The ride was a pleasant one with the tour guide pointing out things along the way but it was a good distance to the ruins.

If you're adventurous, you will have no problem finding a cab driver in Playa del Carmen willing to take you to Tulum. They will negotiate price and make side trips, etc. It is about 38 miles, 63 km, from Playa del Carmen to Tulum. The highway down the coast is a nice highway, the cab drivers drive very fast.

I just went over to Cruise Critic to do a search for you because I know there are a LOT of threads regarding this exact subject over there, but then I saw that you've already been there (on that site) Have you found your info there?? Let me know if you haven't, I can help you to search

Thanks SeaSpray, I did go over there and got some info on how to get there. It seems a bit daunting - DH is NOT very adventuresome, esp in a foreign country. Oh well, if I just act like I know what I'm doing perhaps he'll just follow along. Yeah, right!
