Has anyone done a split stay/worth it?

I am considering a split stay, somewhere on Harbor combined with the GCH. I know I'd have to move my own luggage, in fact if we do this we would take an uber/lyft with luggage on "moving day".

What are you experiences with this? I am not sure, but I have a good rate for the GCH I might not want to pass on.

We did a split stay in 2019 and it was wonderful. We couldn't really afford Disneyland Hotel for 5 nights, but 2 worked out nicely. We did DLH first and then moved to the Hyatt. Next time we do a split stay I would probably move to the onsite property second. It was totally worth it and a very nice treat. In June we are doing Hojo/ Grand Californian.

We did a 3 days at a regular hotel / 2 days at the DLH trip a couple years ago and it was great! Granted, we had a car so moving our suitcases over wasn't too difficult but with so many rideshare options I think taking part of your time one day to move over would be quick and easy.

Absolutely do the GCH second as a way to end on that high note!

We did 4 hotels (Hollywood-GCH-DLH-Huntington Beach) on our last SoCal trip, so definitely a fan of a split stay! I would just caution that your “moving day” be a non-park day, if possible. It’s rather nice to check in (esp on-site) and be able to enjoy the hotel and amenities. Adds to the excitement!

We do split stays at WDW all the time and love it. Doing our first split stay at DLR this summer. First night at DLH club level. Never stayed there before and never done club level. The rest of the trip will be at GCH. Hope EMH is back by then!

So I know the general consensus is to do the Disney hotel last, but with EArly entry coming back would it make sense to do it first to take advantage of that early in the trip?

If early entry is the priority, then I would start with an onsite hotel - always front load the most important stuff (for us that is fireworks or nighttime entertainment.) If enjoying the ambiance, being in the bubble and other amenities such as the pool and hotel decor are important, then my suggestion would be to end with an onsite.

I would wager most people staying onsite right now are not doing it for the extra perks. They are doing it because they want to be in the bubble, want the proximity of GCH, enjoy the theming, etc.

We have done it a few times, always doing the DL resorts second half.

The two trips we have done for WDW we did splits and it was much easier.

What we've done in the past when staying offsite first is to Uber over super early in the AM so we can still take advantage of EMH on check-in days. I believe you can start checking in at 6am. There would never be a line at that time and you can drop your bags off with bell services and just head over to the parks while you wait for the room ready text. Of course, this is all dependent on if you can wrangle your group (and be ready to leave) that early in the AM!

For the split stay veterans, preference for Harbor Hotels or do you not put much thought in since it’s just to hold you over until you move on-site?

We have never stayed off site as we either a) used to live in SoCal or b) chose to stay at DLH but with on-site prices we thought a split stay would be a good way to dip our toes in to the off site life. 😁

It depends on the time I plan to be in the other hotel. We have done split stays where we were flying in late on Thursday or Friday so just did whichever hotel was cheapest and then uber over to the Grand at 6am to check in. If I am staying 2-3 days at the Harbor hotel then I usually choose the Park Vue Inn.

If it's based on proximity to the parks, then directly across the street at a BW, or even at one of the Marriott brands on the corner of Harbor/Katella. If you don't mind parking in the structure, then I usually stay down the street at a Hilton or Marriott brand, you save a bit of money.

I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about moving our stuff or any of the above
Not that it sounded hard and we could’ve easily done it

But soooo glad we are staying all 5 nights

I pick the Harbor hotel based on how long we'll be there. For this trip we'll be either at Hojo if we're staying 3 nights on Harbor, but if it's only 2 we'll stay at the Best Western.

I am considering a split stay. We haven't stayed in the DLH for 10 years. so I thought it would be nice to spend the extra money to stay there. But they don't have any rooms available on 10/4....

I would keep trying. I've often seen rooms become available if I check the website regularly.
