We are thinking of leaving a few days earlier on our Disneyland trip so we can check out LA and also hang out at the beach. We would love to stay in Santa Monica but hotels are so expensive there. We can get a better rate in the Redondo Manhattan Beaches area. Have you been there? Is it nice?
We are thinking 2 nights 10/12-10/14.

My DH grew up in the LA area, and until recently on of his brothers lived in Manhatten Beach, so I will ask DH about it when he comes home later!!

I know there are some seriously dicey areas around there, but Manhatten Beach always looked okay to me.

So stay tuned, I'll be back with hopefully useful information!!!

I spoke with the DH, and both areas are quite nice. If your goal is to be closer to Santa Monica, El Segundo is closer. It doesn't have a particularly good beach, but is close to Santa Monica. The courtyard by Marriot in El Segundo is a fav of his family.

Have fun!!

I live about 15 minutes from Redondo Beach, & work in El Segundo.

Redondo Beach/Hermosa Beach/Manhattan Beach are all nice. They run into each other. The Redondo Beach Pier has restaurants, and a few shops. I like Tony's Fishmarket. It looks out towards Palos Verdes Peninsula, and dinner at sunset is really nice. They have good clam chowder there & their meals are also good. In Hermosa Beach there is a place called the Comedy & Magic Club (18+) which is nice, though I haven't been in a few years.

As Grumpyvet said, the Courtyard by Marriott is a nice hotel in El Segundo, as is the Doubletree, which is nearby. There are a lot of nice restaurants and shopping in this area.

El Segundo Beach is where the Beach Boys used to hang out (that whole area, since they lived in Hawthorne, nearby), and there is a plaque there that says that handgliding started there. The beach is okay in El Segundo, and a little north of there is Dockweiler with fire pits (airplanes from LAX fly over Dockweiler.

You'll see volleyball courts along these beaches.

The beaches go all the way to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, and if you're lucky, you'll see dolphins swim by. :)

I used to stay at the courtyard before hopping on a plane to lax. it's nice but make sure not to be on the street side. it is on busy street & can be LOUD. But the non-busy street side is quiet.

Try not to drive up to Santa Monica during rush hour. I used to have to drive that commute home from work & sometimes it would take me 45-60 min to get home when it took me 20 min in the morning.

We stayed at the Residence Inn Manhattan Beach and like it ver much. It is not on the beach but short drive to the beach areas.
