Has anyone added extra destinations?

We are off to Disneyland and the Disney Wonder in Sept 2012. We were intending to do a week at Disneyland area and then a week in San Diego orginally. Now I'm toying with the idea of having a week somewhere down in Mexico and trimming back the other two destinations. Has anyone done this? I don't know how the American market books holidays to Mexico, so I'm a little lost as to whether to search a package (like I'd do if I was in the UK or here). Any thoughts?

A few of us add destinations all the time.....

Which part of Mexico were you thinking of heading to? There is a major drug war going on in Mexico right now.....

Probably Cabo or PV. Not too far down the coast and places were the majority of cruiselines are still going. We've not been to Mexico at all and thought it might be quite nice for a week to have a mid winter bucket and spade holiday.

hi there

just having got back from cabo san lucas & PV.....awesome spots but do it on a cruise. Carnival, disney, and other cruise lines go down there frequently. We did the disney wonder, was expensive, but we hear carnival are great and a lot cheaper if cost is a factor.
mexico now isnt a place to "backpack/ hire a car etc".....too unstable, but on the cruise we felt safe and secure.
Hope this helps.
We too are looking at WDW/ Disneyland/ Seattle/ San fran sept/oct 2012...so keep us up to date on your plans :) I love to steal other peoples ideas and pass them off as my own:rolleyes1

Cabo used to be a great place to drive down Baja California to. I'm not sure I would drive there now....way too many unexpected shootings happening. As Karen has said, if you wish to go to Cabo and PV, take a cruise instead.

Have you considered heading to NorCal instead?

I wouldn't go to Mexico atm, unless it was on a cruise. Maybe consider driving up the coast to San Fransisco. It is a beautiful drive.
:thumbsup2

Thanks ladies. I'm on a cruise six months later with a friend and we are doing PV and Cabo and we are doing the Pac Coast DCL cruise with the kids on this particular holiday - we have two days in San Fran already on that. We don't really want to do a heap of driving with the kids and one week in OC one week in San Diego now seems like a long time (well the week in OC part given our interests). I thought about Grand Canyon but the kids are at the age they think it looks like a large hole in the ground and want to know where all the diggers are - so that's out. Beyond that DH doesn't want to go much more North of LA as I did suggest Yosemite but he said it's all a bit like what we have at home in NZ and not special enough to warrant the drive time. Mexico appealed to me and I've read MFAT / DS reports on safety and we thought PV or Cabo via air and staying at a gated resort might be an option, or possibly flying to the Eastern side of Mexico instead.

If you still decide to stay the entire week in San Diego, and your DH is prepared to do smaller drives, there is a little town called Julian....noted for Apple Pies. It is one of those small Americana towns, rather touristy, but rather sweet in its way. It's on the way to Anza Borrega Desert. Anza Borrega is featured in the Soarin' scenes. There are about 15 - 20 shops in Julian that sell artsy stuff. Its not overwhelming for kids, and there are food places to enjoy there as well....and the apple pie is good.

You'd take the 15 north out of SD towards Escondido and then head east on the 78. This is probably the route you'd take to get to the SD Wildlife Zoo as well.
