I just saw the electric bill online... it hasn't come in the mail yet so I don't know exactly how much we've used yet.
The last place we lived in our average bill was less than a 100$... this one is 175$. There's a first time set up fee of 15$, and this was a slightly longer month because we had service set up on Apr 25th and instead of giving us a partial month, they lumped it into May (reading on june 8th).
I need to get better at hitting the power switches on these surge protectors. I know that stupid DVR box has to be pulling some juice in more than the tv being off. It was nice when we only had antenna tv because it had an annoying blue LED on it, so I always remember to turn it off every night.
And the cable internet box is always hotter than can be... but with a room-mate that uses it wirelessly, I have no idea when she's on it or not. So I'd feel bad if I pulled the plug on her. I wish I had the money to buy a flat screen monitor, it'd use less than this old CRT.
I sure hope this is a one time thing only. I don't think we could afford another bill like this again.
What's a polite way of asking room-mates to be more energy conscience?? I've opened the dishwasher afterwards to find that a lot more could've gone in, and I think she uses a halagon bulb for her lamp. And unfortantly we didn't buy enough CFLs before she moved in to put in her bathroom/closet. I know we're all culprits in this bill... but it went a lot higher than I would've expected for 3 people.
On my way to finally install our preset thermostat... since Kari hasn't made time for it. (she doesn't trust me to do it right, but what she doesn't see can't hur her.)

I go up about every other day and adjust the thermostat.
You could put everything else on a power strip and leave the DVR plugged into the wall. Then just make turning off the power strip a habit whenever you turn off the tv. You could even put a note on the remote. Setting your dishwasher to air dry instead of heat dry is an energy saver, too. Little things do add up, but I don't think you'll see huge differences. Do you have a washer/dryer? Electric water heater? I started washing all our laundry in cold, and try to hang dry most of our clothes. I take quick showers (usually because I like to sleep till the last possible moment, but it can't hurt the power bill!). Our house is smaller than your apt., and our bill is always close to $200. My husband works at home, and often has 3 or more computers running all day long. (He's a computer guy)
