WASHINGTON (AP) -- Imagine an invisibility cloak that works just like the one Harry Potter inherited from his father.

Researchers in England and the United States think they know how to do that. They are laying out the blueprint and calling for help in developing the exotic materials needed to build a cloak.

OOOO!! I'm thinking, ladies locker room!!! :thumbsup2 :lmao:

I already have one around my car. :teeth: Other drivers seem to find me invisible once I enter the vehicle.

Well, this will just validate all the people who think there are invisible beings following them around. :lmao:

I think it's kind of creepy, actually. I'm kind of one of those people I mentioned above...:lmao: :rotfl:

Forget the MOVIES...I'm thinking it's a good way to get into WDW!!! :thumbsup2

Now we can all have debates over whether it's ethical, and if it's more or less evil than pool-hopping, mug recycling, or sneaking your 6 yr old in as a 2 yr old. :lmao:

While I think the invisibility cloak would be cool, I'd really like to have my own Firebolt instead!

Cool!

I don't get it though, even if this material they would create would neither reflect light or cast shadows thus appearing invisible, how would that hide what's underneath it? Wouldn't it just be the cloak itself that would be invisible? Aah, who knows... it's still a neat idea!

No, because it would essentially create a "bubble" in the visual spectrum. Anything inside the bubble would be invisible as long as the "cloak" completely encircled the wearer

I don't get this either. I get that you wouldn't see the cloak or what's underneath, but it doesn't seem like you'd be able to see what's BEHIND the person in the cloak.

Say, if a person is standing in front of a large tree trunk. You can't see THROUGH the cloak to the tree trunk behind him. Wouldn't the actual bark & texture of the trunk be distorted in some way where the person is standing? Even if the light bent around the cloak, if it's a wide person, you can't see directly behind the person. The texture & lines of the trunk would be distorted & the eye would pick that up - especially if the person moved. Or if the person was standing in front of the edge of the trunk, that part of the trunk would be missing. :confused3

I would think this cloak, (the way they are devising it now,) would only work in front of a mono-colored wall, where there would be no detectable break in the background. :scratchin

I must have watched too many Star Trek episodes :rotfl: where even when the Klingons use their invisibility cloak, there is a spacial distortion, like looking through wavy gasoline fumes on a hot day. :goodvibes

Okay, now I get what you're saying. Yeah, I think anything invisible would have to be within the cloak itself and in the "wake" so to speak created by the distortion of the light. And like you, I think there would be some detectable distortion.
