Hi:
I have a nephew who is getting married at the Hard Rock in Punta Cana next May. I have never done an exchange. I know it is in RCi is it possible to exchange and then add in the all inclusive for food etc. I am also looking for a 3 bedroom as both my married sons are in the wedding and their families will be going. If it's in RCI does it mean that we can definitely exchange for it or are there exclusions that don't let us exchange. We would be doing a 7 day trip. Thank you

I'm no expert but I was looking into AI's in MX and yes that was possible. The problem is the AI fee was mandatory and it was very expensive. I did some gorilla math and was way better off renting my points and putting that money towards the AI resort, that I booked through a third party site, than exchanging DVC.

There have occasionally been threads here about the AI exchanges. It seems that those exchange AI fees are so expensive, you can often just rent the same thing for cash for only a few $ more than just the AI fee without using your DVC Points.

Before going through an exchange, I'd price it out either with a travel agent or directly through the Hard Rock Punta Cana website. and compare.

None of the resorts have 3 BR in that areas, the only one on the DVC exchange list with 3 BR is in Puerta Plata. It looks it it's about 5.5 to 6.5 hours away. A couple have 2 BR and you're likely looking at MID season points for the unit size in question. Most are mandatory AI and the one that isn't, you can't use the bars or restaurants if you don't get the optional AI. The cost varies from about $550 pp to almost double that.

Is he getting married at the hotel or the cafe, I think the HR resort is a little distance from Punta Cana? It's usually best to stay at the same resort as the wedding if possible though. If you know anyone that's an II or RCI member they might be able to get you hooked up much more cheaply. I just looked at the AI fee for the HR and it's $2366 per room for 7 nights for 1 or 2, $742 for each additional adult in the room (only hotel rooms I believe).

Do look at package deals as you can often get the entire thing about the same amount without using your DVC points.

It's not on the DVC list but is available through RCI (I haven't checked to see if it's dual enrolled), that's one of the reasons I mentioned the non DVC RCI & II direction. I would imagine one could pick something like that up from a friend or acquaintance for the exchange fee plus guest certificate fee and the AI costs plus maybe picking up the cost of a meal out together. It's also possible that some of the independent's may rent them cheaply. I just looked at my Bluegreen options and there is a ton of access under "hot weeks" which cost me 3000 BG points (about $150) for next weekend and there's no exchange fee on those so that's the total cost other than the AI fee.

I have several family members who are owners in the Hard Rock Resorts system and they rent out weeks for what sounds like is less than the all inclusive prices through RCI. I'd recommend looking into renting from an owner there. (By the way, I haven't stayed at the Punta Cana location, but I've stayed at a couple of them in Mexico and have had a GREAT time. Hope your trip is wonderful!)
