Hard Mattress

Just came back from a recent stay at SSR in a dedicated 2 bedroom for 4 adults. All of my guests commented on how hard the mattress was. I sleep on a very firm mattress at home but I must admit the mattress was extremely hard. I slept in the 2nd bedroom. I really didn't get a good night's sleep on the queen bed until the second day.

Has anyone else noticed how hard the beds are at SSR or is this normal at the DVC resorts?

Thanks
:)

when I first stayed at OKW in 93 - they had those awful (in my opinion) soft mattress - I hated them.

Hard mattress last longer - so they don't have to replaced as often - less maintence fees for you and me.

I like the hard mattress.....

Perhaps with everything being so new at SSR they need break in time.

I started staying at a new hotel in the last year on business - and while the mattresses were OK - the pillows were HUGE - I had a stiff neck for the first few stays..... THEN i started using towels to sleep on. Finally after a year, the pillows are starting to get a little flatter - but I'm getting used to bringing my own.

In any case, I think some hotels go OTT in getting rock hard mattresses. DVC is guilty of that i think.

Put me down as one who much prefers a firm mattress to a soft one. It's one of the things I like about not just DVC but WDW in general. I've never stayed at a WDW resort that has a mushy mattress, and for people like me firm beats soft any day. Wait a minute, maybe I should reword that......

Maybe they need more honeymooners there? We have only stayed at OKW and their mattresses are very firm. Not so much the mattress, but I can't tolerate the pillows! They are just too mushy and 2 is too many. I just need to bring mine from home!

I prefer a hard mattress, but found the pillows at SSR to be a little too overstuffed! I had an extremely difficult time getting comfortable at SSR in August and thinking seriously of sleeping in the Jacuzzi (there were already people on the living room couch). I'll be bringing my own pillows next time!

We have never had the problem of hard mattresses during any of our stays. We have stayed 5 or 6 times at BWV, 1 at BCV, 2 at OKW.
We have also never had that problem at the PV, which we have stayed at ALOT !!!!
However we have had the problem of horrible mattresses (?)
in the villas pull down couch/queen sleeper. We have used ---or tired to use---these several times. They have always been awful!! My DH thinks disney does this on purpose so we use our points on a 2br instead of a 1br. At BWV is is quite a problem because, usually, the second bedroom has 1 queen bed and 1 sleeper/sofa. We have always requested 2 beds in the second bedroom and we have been given that type of room.
Anyone else find the sleepers unsleepable ?:bounce:

"Anyone else find the sleepers unsleepable ?"

I guess we differ. I have found the sleeper sofas at BWV to be the best I have ever slept on. Usually I DO find sleeper sofas unsleepable, but for some reason the ones at BWV are fine.
I'm not saying they are as comfy as the beds are, but I think they are decent and I had no trouble sleeping on one.

I'm happy to hear that.

We stayed at Pop last weekend and my neck and back hated the soft mattress. It wasn't mushy, but my DH and I have an extra firm mattress-anything less than that and I ache.

So, I guess I'll be staying at my home resort more! :)

Haven't stayed at SSR yet so I don't know how the mattresses compare to other DVC resorts. But I do prefer a firm mattress.

However, if the mattresses bother you, I heard (never tried it) that you can request an egg carton thingy to put on top of the mattress.

Absolutely...works great. Just call housekeeping when you checkin, they'll bring you one right up. I didn't need it on my side so DW folded in in half. You may want to ask for two egg crates to adaquately pad the whole bed.

We just returned from a week at OKW and I believe the new mattresses there are the hardest we have ever encountered. And I noticed that the sides have some sort of extra rigid piece of something (steel??) so that if you sit on the side of the bed the mattress sides won't break down.

Anyway, I did not know about the egg crate thingy -- I use that at home. My husband insists that I must be extra sensitive (princess and the pea). I ended up using the extra bed pillows from the closet to pad the mattress and that was much better for me. I would wake up in the morning and could hardly move -- my ribs and back hurt so much. It would take about 30-45 minutes after I was up for it to go away. Wish I had figured out those pillows sooner or known about the egg crate thingy. Next time.

We did have a great time and I'll try to get around to posting more later.

Can't wait to ask for one of these on our trip next month. Plus, I think it will be fun to use the term egg crate thingy in conversation.

We noticed this at SSR, too. And prior to SSR, we were at BCV and didn't experience this.

I enjoyed the sleeper sofa at BWV.

On our first stay at BWV last December, our bed was wonderful. We both slept better than we ever did at home (we actually bought a new mattress when we came home because of that trip). This trip, in October, however, the bed was awful. It was so hard and you could almost feel the springs through the top.

Thanks for the feedback :)

I didn't know about the egg crate option. We'll make this request next time.
