Happy Paczki Day

I am heading out this morning in search of Paczki. Usually I would have bought some by now, but I haven’t found any yet.

A local grocery store makes them and I need to go there this morning - maybe I
should buy some :scratchin (I say this every year and then I have guilt and not buy them. Maybe this is the year I actually bring them home)

Success! I got to the store and didn’t see them on the shelf, but I knew they were around because I could smell them. Turns out they were just beginning to package them for sale. So I got two boxes, one of raspberry and one of LEMON! I haven’t had a lemon one for years, and I was so excited to see them. I may share the raspberry, but the lemon are mine! :cool1:

I will be on the hunt for paczki later today! What a delicious treat!

Should I have one? Absolutely not. Will I? You bet! 😁

Was going to be good today - then a co-worker brought a box in and I couldn't say no, so yeah, I had one. :o

Enjoy!

In Pa they do these instead piled high all over the place. The past few days I was trying to find something like these pastry or the Kings Cake that some have in the Epiphany but which I've only ever seen for today - doesn't seem to matter 'cause I'm seeing nothin' of any of this in by me Massachusetts.... sigh

And the rest of the year most people call them jelly/jelly-filled donuts. Think we have this discussion every year about this time.
Yes we do.:duck: But there is definitely a difference in the dough used for Paczki. It is more dense and a lot less sweet than the dough used for a regular raised jelly donut. If I pinch off just a bite of dough, it’s more like bread than pastry. The sweet comes from the filling, glaze, and powdered sugar on top

I am not too picky, and will eat either if available, but given the choice, I would pick Paczki first. It’s okay to prefer a regular jelly donut though. It’s all good!

Where I live in Western PA it was largely populated by Eastern European immigrants working the mines and steel mills, so Paczki's are in all the grocery stores this time of year.

Just picked up half a dozen of them at Giant while I was getting a few other items..mmmmm

 Wow, that makes me better for picking up (regular) donuts since lent is going to start. Paczki was what my mom used to call my little brother when he was a baby.

As I recall the stories from when I was younger, the origin of Fat Tuesday/Paczki had to do with bakeries wanting to use up their eggs, butter, cream, etc. prior to Lent since fewer of those items would be in demand. They came up with the idea of the Paczki as a way to do that. Whether what you get at your typical grocery store is any different from a regular jelly donut probably depends on what tradition that store follows and where you live. Have lived in some parts of the country that have no idea what a Paczki is.
