OK- here is a little ditty for your reading pleasure!
I have been lurking around here for a few months now. Here is my back story. I am a public school teacher (kindergarten) and my DH was laid off May 1st. We have no kids, but spoil our DNs like they are queens. I have always had an eye out for a good deal or coupon. (Growing up the people at our favorite grocery store called my mom the "Coupon Queen") We have never been wealthy by any means. Usually month to month in most cases, but we were finally getting to that point in life where there is a little give in the budget occassionally. We have also never been extravagant spenders either. DH is occasionally an impluse buyer but not too bad.
We after he was laid off we have been working hard to stretch every penny. I have not offically said it is a no spend month, but it has been only the "must haves" not the "must wants". We had already paid for a cruise coming up in a few days and thought seriously about canceling it. The fees would have cost a big chuck so we kept it, but we are not buying ANYTHING extra. We will just be happy to be out of the house and smile.
Well here is what has happened to make me do a happy dance. In April our school found out that we are going to be a Title 1 school next year. (Basically a high enough percentage of our students are concidered low income for the federal government to step in and give us a little extra money for our general supplies. Thank goodness! I usually spend roughly $2000 a year in my classroom for supplies and necessaries for my students.) When I heard this I remembered that a few years ago there was a student loan forgiveness for teachers in Title 1 schools. So off I go to look it up online.
Well to my surprise
the loan forgiveness program is not just for Title 1 school but school labeled "low economic status". They suggest that you look at the list the government has that shows school considered low income. Well here is another surprise, my school has been considered low income for many years! I filled out he application, printed it, took it to my lender and waited. I called a couple of time to check on it and they said that it was with the grantor and they did not know anything at this point it could be August before we know anything. So I kind of/ not really forgot about it.
Today I get the mail and
there is a letter that says they are happy to inform me that they have forgiven $5000 of my student loan (a little more that 1/3 of what I still owed.)
chunk of debt gone! If only the credit card company would do the same we would be down to nothing but our cars and our mortage.
I called a friend and she was like ..."well that's great"... . Where's the YAHOO! She just doesn't get it
. I knew that the Disers on the budget board would appreciate my extreme happiness.
EVERYBODY HAPPY DANCE WITH ME!
