OK- here is a little ditty for your reading pleasure!

I have been lurking around here for a few months now. Here is my back story. I am a public school teacher (kindergarten) and my DH was laid off May 1st. We have no kids, but spoil our DNs like they are queens. I have always had an eye out for a good deal or coupon. (Growing up the people at our favorite grocery store called my mom the "Coupon Queen") We have never been wealthy by any means. Usually month to month in most cases, but we were finally getting to that point in life where there is a little give in the budget occassionally. We have also never been extravagant spenders either. DH is occasionally an impluse buyer but not too bad.

We after he was laid off we have been working hard to stretch every penny. I have not offically said it is a no spend month, but it has been only the "must haves" not the "must wants". We had already paid for a cruise coming up in a few days and thought seriously about canceling it. The fees would have cost a big chuck so we kept it, but we are not buying ANYTHING extra. We will just be happy to be out of the house and smile.

Well here is what has happened to make me do a happy dance. In April our school found out that we are going to be a Title 1 school next year. (Basically a high enough percentage of our students are concidered low income for the federal government to step in and give us a little extra money for our general supplies. Thank goodness! I usually spend roughly $2000 a year in my classroom for supplies and necessaries for my students.) When I heard this I remembered that a few years ago there was a student loan forgiveness for teachers in Title 1 schools. So off I go to look it up online.

Well to my surprise :scared1: the loan forgiveness program is not just for Title 1 school but school labeled "low economic status". They suggest that you look at the list the government has that shows school considered low income. Well here is another surprise, my school has been considered low income for many years! I filled out he application, printed it, took it to my lender and waited. I called a couple of time to check on it and they said that it was with the grantor and they did not know anything at this point it could be August before we know anything. So I kind of/ not really forgot about it.

Today I get the mail and :banana: there is a letter that says they are happy to inform me that they have forgiven $5000 of my student loan (a little more that 1/3 of what I still owed.) pixiedust:chunk of debt gone! If only the credit card company would do the same we would be down to nothing but our cars and our mortage.

I called a friend and she was like ..."well that's great"... . Where's the YAHOO! She just doesn't get it :confused3. I knew that the Disers on the budget board would appreciate my extreme happiness.

EVERYBODY HAPPY DANCE WITH ME!:cool1::banana::yay::woohoo::cheer2:

That's awesome!!! Congratulations!!!

I am still quite a few years away from paying off my student loans and I know what that feels like so if I got a chunk forgiven I would be doing a happy dance all the way down the block!!!

Hi, I think that is wonderful. My dd is a new high school science teacher in a title I school. Could you guide me to where she could look up this program? Thanks so much, you could pm me if you like.

Super Amazing!!!
That's like when you save money with coupons and when you tell someone they are like oh okay, instead of YIPPEE!!!!

Thanks everyone! I knew you would understand. :grouphug:

I have actually gotten quiet a few requests for the information about this program so I will go ahead and post some info. here.

**I removed first link, possibly related to buying a service** The second link is the application itself. The only "extra" thing I had to do was have my principal sign it to prove that I had worked for at least 5 years in our county.

If you teach in a "low" income area by their standards (I was surprised we were because our population has just recently shifted from being middle working class area) and have at least 5 year under your belt I say try. All they can do is say no. You can also qualify for $17,500 forgiveness if you are "highly qualified and teach in the hard to staff areas- Math and Science". I just missed out on that one by teaching general curriculum and not a single subject. (Middle and High School teacher- jump on that!)

Give it a try.

Again thanks for the support!

There is an IBR program that started on July 1. Everyone with student loans should check that out, too.

It could lower your monthly payment and forgive your entire loan after ten years if you work in public service (police, fire, teacher, etc.)

OP, CONGRATS!

That's awesome! But I do have one concern, why are you spending that much a year in supplies? I'm not trying to hijack the thread. There are so many grants out there. Someone in your district's office should have something on them. I'm talking about grants that are like $100-$500 bucks. This would fund any projects you want to do.

Being a Title I, your school should get more money too.

As a mother of 4 children in public schools, I AM THRILLED FOR YOU! Teachers deserve so much for all they do for our children! I know my children's teachers have always paid for so much out of pocket! Congratulations and enjoy your vacation!

In addition to the loan forgiveness program, there is also a TEACH grant for those future teachers in school/heading to college. If you sign a contract to teach for 4 of 8 years in a low income, high need area, you can get a grant up to $4k per year for school. I don't know if you could combine the two but that'd pay a good sum towards loans.

Need. We give supply lists at our student round up in the spring and again the first day of school and our parents just don't send things in. Basic necessities pencils, glue, etc. We get $100 a year from our county for "extra" as they call them. But when you have 20-25 children in a room $100 for the entire year does not go far. I have bought everything from software that I felt was necessary to help an at risk child, basic school supplies, books, class field trips, and even shoes for a kids that is wearing ones that are so small his toes turn blue because of lack of circulation. We had a grant writer a few years ago for our entire county but she was cut when they had to cut our budget 2 years ago. Even then the grants were always given to the more affluent schools anyway. :confused3 (One school got an entire technology lab with 30+ computers, SMART boards, and digital cameras and the newest computer in my room is 10+ years old.) I have come to the conclusion that I knew I was not going into teaching for the money. One teaching assistant (god bless them because they get paid next to nothing) said something one time that really has stuck with me... "Just like being ministers, teacher and people who work with children are called to do it. It is their purpose and reason in life. The benefits that I get from that will never show up on my paycheck." I had never heard it spoken so clearly. I just think when we go to buy supplies and I drop $150 -$200 of my own money ... it is for my kids, I'll do whatever it takes to make them successful!

Thanks!
Vaction will be very short. I taught summer school for all of June. We have the cruise next week. Then the day after I start again. I have 2-3 days each week until the first of August (when we are offically on contract) that are professional development trainings. I always :scared: when people say, "it must be nice to have 3 months off in the summer" are up kidding me :scared1: if you only knew. That being said I LOVE TEACHING!

Did you have to pay a *fee* for the *kit*? Also in the letter you received the other day, was a check enclosed, or is it still forthcoming? Just wondering because this sounds like the company my sister used, and not very successfully.... Shes on vaca but I will definitely ask when we talk next week.

Sure hope it works correctly for you op!

ETA: Spoke with my mom who said my sister first tried using the *kit* as described in the above links, but its just a company that repackaged (to create a bu$$iness) what you can do on your own with no fees through the Department Of Education at

My mom just saw a local news brief that our state's attorney general is now investigating companies who are charging fees to obtain *grants*. They said there's a fine line between scam and a legitimate business, and consumers should go directly to the government's website and not use one of the companies who often charge hundreds but essentially do the same thing you would do. HTHS.

I just read their web site to get information about how the process works and printed the application from the second link. I took the application to EdFinancial who has my student loans. Waited and got the letter. They just took it off my account. There was never a check or money that changed hands- all electronic. I have already checked my account online and just gotten my July bill and both reflect the $5000 deduction.

I did not realize the first company was requesting money for the kit, I just looked at it to get info. I'll go back and edit the link. I would not want anyone paying for something I got for free.
