Hang In There Joan-May '14 TR-video links 2/2

Our tale begins a day or two before we actually traveled to WDW. It’s boring, I know, but a few things that happened are actually worth sharing.

I very much doubt I'm going to be bored.
I'll just sit right back and hear this tale.

I was not prepared for this trip.

WHAT?????
Hold the phone!
You?!???!? Not prepared????

Oh I’d made a dozen shirts, a few bags, taken on a ridiculous project for myself (more on that later), and made 2 or 3 trips to Target, but I wasn’t ready.

No. Of course not.
You've already done more than most of us put together....
But you're not prepared.

aside from about a dozen princess dresses I had not packed for Maddie and I at all.

 Yeah. Aside from that.

Finally 2 days before we were scheduled to leave I carved out a few hours in the afternoon to get our things packed.

Wow! Not only can you sew, but you can carve too!

The next day I lugged the 4 suitcases (one stuffed full of princess dresses and accessories, one with mostly Maddie’s bathing suits and underwear, one with my clothes, and one mostly empty one for souvenirs—‘cause bags fly free with Southwest!) that Maddie and I were taking down the stairs.

Only 2 suitcases for Maddie?

So disappointed.

A tip for those of you that may not be light packers-- check your Mickey Mail when it arrives. Turns out they send one yellow tag per person.

You really should have specified that at least one of the persons going was a princess.
They make allowances for them.

The very nice gal who answered confirmed that it was too late for new tags, but told me that I could give them my claim tickets at the airport DME counter and they’d gather our bags and deliver them to our hotel room along with the tagged bags.

<phew>! Sounds like it might (stressing the "might") work.

I took a few minutes to log onto the Disney Store’s website to see if they had the blasted Anna Coronation dress that Maddie had her heart set on getting from the BBB (note to self, work on child’s unreasonable expectations).

 I sense some frustration here.
"blasted" dress.

Yup. Possibly some frustration.

That’s when I realized that the basement floor was wet. Again.

Oh, no! Not now!!!

Those of you who followed my last TR may remember that we became the proud owners of not one, but two new sump pumps last winter, so the water was a very unwelcome surprise. I dried it up as best I could, and called Bryan who in turn called our plumber.

I do recall.
I'm also thinking... (without reading ahead)... that's it's something else.

I picked Maddie up at school and from there we went for our traditional day-before-vacation pedicures.

Her toes, not mine

Very nice.
And I already assumed they were Maddie's.
Unless you have very tiny feet.

We met Bry at home where the plumber was just finishing up. He assured us that he’d taken care of the problem. Since I probably won’t remember to report this later, I’ll tell you now that he was wrong. We got home to find about 3 inches of water covering the entire basement.

!!

Three... THREE inches????
Oh, he did a really good job there.

Perhaps it's time to ask around for another plumber.
One who actually knows something about plumbing, perhaps?

In the last week we’ve ripped up and reassembled our deck and spent several thousand dollars on new pipes for the septic lines that run beneath it. We also have a new water softener!

Whoa, boy.
Not fun. :sad2:

The plumbers have been here so often that our beagle now considers them friends and gets very sad when they leave.

I shouldn't laugh at your misfortune, but that's funny.

I was tasked with trying to get a very excited princess to sleep.

Chloroform?
Rag soaked in gasoline?
Vodka? (Or was that for you?)

Around 8 am MiL texted me to say that our flight was already delayed 30 minutes but we decided to leave as planned and use the extra time to eat some lunch.

We always prefer to arrive too early, than too late.

breezed through security because MiL had been pre-approved by TSA and they let us go with her.

Have you mentioned this before? On another flight?
Seems like you have, but I could be wrong.

Now that is the way to travel! We didn’t have to take off our jackets, remove our laptops, or go through the full body scan. It was great!

DW and I were just talking about that.
I'm going to have to look into it.

Once at the gate, an announcement was made that our flight was delayed another 45 minutes (it was stuck in Kansas City).

Ugh.
At this point, there's no point in keeping track.
Just assume that it'll keep getting delayed until you finally get on the darned airplane!

if you ever find yourself in Chicago get some Garrett's popcorn, you'll thank me later.

Please, Lord.
Help me remember....

Nevermind Lord. I sent myself an email.

Upon arrival in Orlando we found our way easily to the DME desk, and it turns out the woman I’d spoken to was correct-they will pick up your bags and deliver them for you-even without the yellow tags! Score one for Bryan who would have been stuck lugging all that!

Yay!
And I feel for Bryan... or would have, I suppose.

We used our Magic Bands for the first time at the DME lines, and found ourselves on a bus within 15 minutes

However, due to the Magic Bands being not quite what they're advertised...
We wound up in the worst part of Miami, in between two gangs engaged in a war.

Grainy selfie featuring blinged out Magic Band and mom-made Anna and Elsa shirt

Who cares if it's grainy.... you're there!

As most of you know, Maddie is a serious character hunter.

::yes::

It’s a really big part of WDW for her, but I know that it won’t last forever.

Also, ::yes::

I wanted to make her a nice keepsake of all of her character hunting trips, and I got the bright idea of making her a quilt.

That's a really good idea, Shan.

In classic Shannon fashion though, I couldn’t just make a simple quilt.

I would've been shocked if it'd been otherwise.

Oh no! That would be too easy. What I decided to do was have each character sign a plain white square of fabric, and once we returned home I’d “frame” each signature with a specially designed border.

Cool idea, though.

Before we left, I cut all the squares, ironed them onto freezer paper to give them some stability, bought a 6x6” clipboard to make them easier to sign, assembled many colors of Sharpie, and stuffed the whole mess into a gallon sized freezer bag that we (and by we I mean Bryan) carried in our park bag.

Um....
Yeah.
That is a lot of effort!

She better appreciate this!!!!

Queen of Hearts-stay tuned for the fun story how we met her (on day 8 :rotfl:)

I'll hold ya to that!

Thanks for letting me share! I'll post more pics as I complete some more squares!

Sounds good! What you've got so far is pretty impressive!
Thanks for posting Shantafrass!

Trips always start with boring details. I just can't tell a story without the start though! I'd love to be like "and then we were at Disney", but man, for continuity's sake, I just can't!

We fly Southwest all the time too. Gotta love the two free bags. But then I use them and that's not good either.

OMG, that completely sucks that you came home to three inches of water after you were told that everything was fine. Grrrrrr.

Oh beautiful Garretts popcorn. Definitely a must have in this area.

The quilt is such a great idea. A good way to remember her love of characters. It may last, you never know. :goodvibes

Gotta get there somehow and that is part of the story too, not boring at all! Thwarts really stinks about the water in your basement! You know it's bad when your dogs are friendly with the plumber!:crazy2:

I love the quilt! Soo cute and it will be worth it when you get it all done! I too, come up with huge unrealistic plans and often work into the wee morning hours trying to execute said projects. It's a problem, but when you are creative, it's a part of the process.

Wow love the squares!! Such a great idea! Wish I was crafty enough for all these awesome projects you do!! Very much looking forward to reading more, I enjoy your TRs!

Just coming quickly out of lurkdom to say I'm subscribed! Your trip reports are always very fun and entertaining! :)

doeth! How did I miss this starting?!?!?! Stupid work getting in the way of keeping up on trip reports! :lmao:

Love the FAQ! though, based on it you have a few annoying and judgmental readers ;)

Ah, we've been there with the flooded basement ... we have a sump pump, but that doesn't do much if the power goes out!

Looking forward to all the meet and greets and the dining sort-of-reviews! And great idea with the quilt! It is looking great so far :thumbsup2

omg I can not believe the water returned !

Delayed flights are the worst! Especially on the way to Disney. :scared1:

Love the glittery magic band. Did you make it as a cover?

That quilt sounds like a major project but the squares you've done so far are gorgeous! It's going to look amazing & will be such a great memory to have! :goodvibes

Subbing! Not sure when I'll get caught up...trying my best to get back on these boards and not let real life interrupt me! :goodvibes

I'm subbing in. I've followed along with your last two trip reports but I never seem to get around to posting.

OMG! I love the quilt. It's the coolest souvenir i've seen.

Yay! A new TR! I'm so excited to hear all about y'alls' latest trip.

First - I LOVE the family pic in your intro. And speaking of your intro, it is great! Very funny!

That really stinks about the plumbing problems! So sorry that y'all had to go home to that. :(

Besides the delayed plane, looks like the trip was off to a good start.

That quilt is going to be amazing. And what a sweet keepsake for Maddie. It seriously brought a tear to my eye. That is really special, Shannon!

I'm late, but I'm here! Loving reading about the trip! :woohoo:

Okay, so I got caught up pretty quickly! :thumbsup2 Love the quilt squares! What an amazing idea! Sorry about the basement issues...:sad2:

I was is Disney when you started this. It will take me some time to catch up, but I wanted to save a spot.

***Okay, back and caught up. I loved the intros as always.

I am so sorry to hear about the water and the expense. The kids just had their house redone and then after tiling the basement floor, they got water. They have roots growing in their pipes. They were able to fix most of the pipes for the time being (they indicated it would probably have to be done in two or three years again).

That's a LOT of princess dresses you packed.

Love the things you've done with the characters autographs.

I've started my girls' TR and it's linked in my signature if you want to join along (can't remember if I sent you a bat signal).

How did I miss the start of your TR???? Can't wait to read about your adventures!

Miss Maddie's hair has gotten soooo long!!! And she looks much older since last year's TR!! How does that happen??? Why do our kiddos grow so fast???? My DD will graduate from high school tomorrow night  and I can't believe how quickly it has gone!!

popcorn:: Waiting for the next update!

PS - That quilt is awesome!!

How many sparkly dresses? :rotfl2:

Looking forward to your newest trip report!

I was not prepared for this trip. Oh I’d made a dozen shirts, a few bags, taken on a ridiculous project for myself (more on that later), and made 2 or 3 trips to Target, but I wasn’t ready.
An impressive level of preparation... but still not ready???? :scared: :faint:

(it finally occurred to me to make my packing lists on the computer where I can SAVE them- I didn't do it, but it's a good idea)
:rotfl2::lmao::rotfl: Live and learn!

That’s when I realized that the basement floor was wet. Again.
:sad2: Well... it could have happened a few days later... :scared1:

Since I probably won’t remember to report this later, I’ll tell you now that he was wrong. We got home to find about 3 inches of water covering the entire basement.
So much for that logic... :faint: :crazy2: Yuck. Sorry you had to return home to that expensive mess.

As most of you know, Maddie is a serious character hunter.
What???? Really???? :rolleyes1

The quilt is a really cool idea! I know she will absolutely love it and treasure it!

I love your patches the quilt is a great idea! This year I am going to have the characters sign sweatshirts for my girls, and one for my mom (as a surprise). If I had any type of sewing skill I would try to the quilt.

We are flying Southwest this year and I am excited about the 2 checked bags pre person. We also fly down with lots of Princess dresses.

Great start I can't wait to read more. :yay:

all those plumbing problems sound horrible sorry you have to go through that. I love the idea of making a character signature quilt for Maddie it is something special that she will hopefully always treasure. Maddie looks so much more grown up than in your last trip report.

Love those pedicures! Maddie's nails are too cute. And, she is losing that little girl look... and growing up! And, the glitter magic band is just so perfect in every way! How you do that?

Eagerly awaiting more! But, no rush! :cool1:

Karen
