Handyman Woes-- What to do??

We paid a handyman/painter to paint our garage floor. We gave him $$ and he purchased materials and painted the floor. He painted it last week, and the paint is now peeling where the tires touch the floor. He left extra paint here, and I read the label when the paint started peeling. The label clearly says, "Paint not intended for floors with automotive traffic. Not for use on garage floors." I called him, and he says that Sherwin Williams told him to use that kind of paint. I told him that that's between him and Sherwin Williams, but the can of paint cleary says not to use on garage floors, and I paid him to paint my GARAGE FLOOR, so he needs to buy proper garage floor paint and come and fix it. He said he is going to call Sherwin Williams and then call me back. That was an hour ago. He has not called back yet. What is my next step? And if it comes to it, does anybody know anything about small claims court? I am FURIOUS that he cheaped out on the paint and pocketed our $$. In the future, I will be buying supplies for work done at my house and pay only for labor. --Katie

The only type of paint that should be used on a garage floor is epoxy type paint. It can be purchased at most home improvement stores (Lowes, Home Depot, ect.) in a kit. The floor also requires extensive preparation and cleaning. If not done properly, even the epoxy paint will peel. If your handyman was licensed, you can file a complaint with your county or state licensing board. If he was not licensed, your only recourse may be to file a small claims court action against him. Wrong stuff on your floor.

I have been installing Epoxy floors for over 17 yrs and see this all the time.

The 1st thing you have to do is Shot blast the floor to open it up to receive
the epoxy.

We are certified to install for Tnemec / Dur-A-Flex / Sherwin-Williams
And just did a chiller plant floor with there stuff.

Good epoxy floor cost about 7-10 Sf installed and comes with a 10yr warranty
from us.

We have installed floors for Universal Studios and Disney so our stuff holds up.

Heres a pic of the floor we just did with Sherwin-Williams 100% epoxy & shot blast.

And here's our work site been doing it a long time and see a lot of stuff.

I would talk to Sherwin-Williams they will not like to hear what he installed and may try to help you if he backs out of the job.
Also just for you to know Sherwin-Williams owns General Polymers and they are big into the Epoxy's for years.

Thanks for the info. DH called him back and he says he's talking to the manager at Sherwin Williams tomorrow to get a refund on the paint he bought (since they apparently told him that this was the right type of paint). DH told him that I would like to go with him to buy the new paint to make sure we get the right stuff. What exactly is "shot blasting" -- is that like power washing? Thanks for your help.--Katie

Shot-Blasting is a concrete surface preparation thing we do to open up the floor and leaves the surface immediately ready for the application of coatings

Metal abrasive thrown by the rapidly rotating blast wheel is accelerated towards the surface being prepared.

The media strikes the surface and rebounds, along with removed contaminants, into a recovery chamber or separator.

The dust collector removes pulverized abrasive, dust, and contaminants. Very little abrasive is lost and the usable media is returned to the storage hopper for recirculation by the blast wheel.

The equipment cost about $45,000 to well over $74,000

You want no water on your floor when you are coating it. We have to do a Concrete Moisture test and has to be 3lbs or less I do know that Sherwin-Williams makes a Hybrid floor that can go up to 12lbs of moisture.

Also for some slip resistance add Shark grip to your last back roll and when we install we roll one way then back across so you do not see any lines.

Sorry to hijack but Tileman if I want to say rip up my carpet and expose the concrete...I would need to have this same process done? I hate my carpet so much and saving for wood. I threaten all the time to rip up the carpet and just paint the concrete til then. Doable?

On a concrete stain no blast its a diff sys. Just a nice grind and your ready.
I myself love the concrete stain with a top coat of Urethane.

They make a great looking floor.

I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that he did it intentionally. We received HORRIBLE advice from a salesperson at our local Sherwin Williams when we were in there inquiring about paint for a garage floor, basically the same thing your handyman is claiming he was told - we were pointed to a can of paint that was clearly labeled as unsuitable for our purposes. Now, we realized it before buying and so should have your handyman, but I'd give him a chance to make it right because of the possibility it was a legitimate mistake.

If he disappears or refuses, small claims court is likely your only recourse. I'm assuming since you say "handyman" rather than "contractor" that he's probably not licensed (DH is forever correcting me on that - he's a licensed builder and says that "handyman" is code for "unlicensed, unemployed man with tools"), so there'd be no regulatory agency to complain to.
