I am looking for ideas of things to carry in the diaper bag. Our DD will turn 1 on our trip. Just any ideas for things that come in handy for a child on the trip. :flower:

diapers
wipes
meds (rash ointment, tylenol, baindaids, etc)
nail clippers
chap stick
extra outfits
snacks
small pack of garabage bags (ruffies on the go)
sunglasses
sun hat

These are things that I can think of off the top of my head

Better than the Ruffies on the go thing...our Dollar Tree and most of the dollar stores I've been in carry diaper disposable bags that are baby powder scented...much smaller and nicer smelling. My baby is 13, but my nephew's wife uses them when she brings her babies for a visit and they are great. I even keep them in my kitchen to toss out food scraps that can't go down the disposal. You get 100 for $1...such a bargain.

I find that carrying less is best, and I've started to leave the diaper bag in the stroller as we go to the attractions. It just gets too heavy to lug around both bag and baby. We use the Land's End little tripper and love it! I put a changing pad, 2 diapers and a pack of wipes in the outside pocket. Inside I put 3 more diapers, a change of clothing, small tube of balmex, a couple band aids, couple jars of baby food, and chlorox wipes. I put either a bottle or a sippee cup, and a water or coke for myself in the drink pocket. I keep my $ and passes in my front pockets, so that we can leave the diaper bag behind. I have even been able to jam my Playtex Hip Hammock in it too.

During our first trip with our daughter, I didn't do the diaper bag either. I just used a backpack and added in what we needed. If you feel that you will need more then what a backpack can handle, bring an extra package of diapers and such that you can store in a locker. You can always go back to it or buy items that you need from the baby center.

A plain flat cloth diaper, carried in a ziploc. You can use it for a million things; stroller sunshade, lightweight blankie, cooling cloth if you wet it down, towel after playing in fountains, or for serious cleanup after that huge Mickey Bar.

Also, a Neutrogena hypoallergenic wax sunscreen stick for faces; everyone will use that. (Great for the part in your hair, BTW.)

I wanted to add...and this is more for the trip down because we're driving, but I recently was looking thru the travel size stuff in Target and they had a mini-50 shee roll of charmin toilet paper. For those just potty trained, not a bad idea...more the the trip down, who knows if rest stops are out of paper, but easy enough to carry around.

a disposable poncho (from the Dollar Store), to use as a stroller cover during those downpours of afternoon showers!

I take a diaper bag everywhere, but last summer I finally got smart.....I still took our smaller diaper bag - continuously hung on the stroller, but I also used a fanny pack. I had a small ID holder for resort card, credit card and driver's license plus some cash. I was able to keep the camera, my glasses and lipstick with me. I left the rest in the diaper bag....diapers, wipes, extra clothing, etc.

cheerios!!! :teeth:

I also carried infant tylenol drops, as well as what others have mentioned.

A change of clothes (I still do that, my daughter is 3, LOL)

ziploc bags, usually quart size...good for many things as well...

Disposable changing table covers for when the Baby care centers aren't nearby.
I also second the little baggies from the Dollar Tree store and using a backpack instead of a traditional diaper bag.

ETA: For your Cheerios or other snacks I also highly recommend the Snack Trap which is an ingenius invention that lets the little ones be able to hold their snack cup without allowing them to spill it.

A change of clothes (our totally-potty trained ? daugther tinkled in the Mission Space play center this past April!

Bibsters disposable bibs

Disposable placemats (LOVE these!)

Band aid kits (come with a bandaid, cleaning pad and antibiotic ointment in one package)

Lollipops for emergencies

Purel hand cleaner

Small package of wipes

These can all fit in a very small diaper bag that I also leave on the stroller, partially so someone doesn't walk off with my Maclaren!

My DS was 20 months during our last trip, but I can add that we were glad we brought those cheapo disposable child-sized forks and spoons. My DS was able to try to feed himself, but the regular restaurant tableware is huge for a little tike! (My DD 4 even used the smaller style at times!!) I would also agree with the previous mention of quart sized Ziploc bags...We were surprised how handy they can be with three kids under 6! Have fun and try to travel light! :flower:

I second the ziplocs. I used them to pack any container holding liquid, i.e. bottle of water, pop, gatorade, etc. Unfortunately I forgot this tip from my camping experiences once and I had a bottle of water leak in my backback and it got everything wet, including an open box of graham cracker sticks, yuck!

Snacks and bubbles were our best friends. They kept DD happy in lines. The bubbles even entertained other people's children!

Small toys and/or books for entertainment while waiting in lines.

I second the disposable changing pads (Huggies makes them I think). Those toss and go cups with straws and utensils were awesome too.

I make up ziploc bags to use at meals with a Bibster, a disposable place mat and a fork or spoon. It makes it easy to just grab one when you repack the bag each night.
I also kept a master list of things to pack so I did not forget anything each day.
Have Fun!

Disposable sippy cups.

Also, a little story to make you laugh. My friend took his 5 or 6 year old daughter to disney for the first time. All day long he kept asking her if she had to go to the wash room. Everytime the answer was no. Just before the parade at MK she was standing on his shoulders and he felt a warm feeling on his head and down his body. She was so mesmerized by Disney that she did not want to miss a thing to go to the washroom. Full change of clothes for her (including shoes) and a new shirt for him.

I agree with everything everyone else said:

Here are other's we took when my DD was 1. Well, two weeks away from being 1 :)

- Canned Premade Formula. (Yes, expensive, but very convenient so you don't have to purchase water).
- Gerber Graduate Lil Entrees...they are perfect for meals for the little ones. They come in flat boxes and you can micro them at the baby care centers.
- Also we would carry a couple of apple sauces. It was good to eat quickly and also provided hydration.
