How does this work, or does it?

We generally just didn't bother doing fastpass the last two trips with me in a chair.

Can you do fastpass and be handicapped or are you limited to just going to the handicapped area? Does fastpass even do anything if you're handicapped? I still have to go to the same area in Disneyland if I'm handicapped (the exits usually.)

Yes, you can do both. For example, when you go to Haunted Mansion, if you are in a WC or ECV, they will issue you a return time equal to 5 mins less than the standby time. But if you go with a FP, they will send you right in at your time. A better example might be Space. Get your FP, then at your FP time, go up the exit to the person at the HA sign. Show him/her your FP, they will place you immediately in the HA queue. You won't ride ahead of those already there, but will not have to wait long. I've usually been in the 2nd rocket once I arrive. It now works that way at all FP rides.

Thank you!
