Handicap parking

We are renting a car for our trip in December. My mom's car has the handicap license plate for my sister. Is it possible to get one for the rental car and how do I go about that?

In Maryland we can go to our local MVA office and apply for a "hang tag" that is portable. It's one of those blue placards you see hanging from people rear view mirror. If I were you I'd give your MVA a call and see what procedure you have to do to get one of these.

It's the same in Minnesota. I don't know if all states will allow you to have both a hangtag and a license plate, but it certainly is worth a call to your states MVA to see. I don't remember for sure, but I think the place we bought our van from said that we could have hangtag and a license plate because the vehicle with the license plate was a specilized wheelchair ramp van. I'm not sure if that is a requirement to get both.

The only way I know of to get a rental car or van with a handicapped plate would be to rent one that is set up for use by someone with a disability. For example, when someone hit my wheelchair lift van, the wheelchair lift van we rented had handicapped plates. You would need to rent from a company that specializes in handicapped accessible vehicles.
