Handicap Parking Wierd Looks

Some people are just mean. I too have a permit for my son who uses a walker or for distance a wheelchair. I'm don't usually use the permit unless it's raining, snowing or way too hot or way too cold. He has Cerebral palsy and asthma and allergies. We've gotten the looks too, because he can pull himself out of the van and stand up holding onto the door. so people think he's fine, till i go to the back and pull out the walker.

I. I think it is far wiser to park than to block the fire lane for 5+ minutes to unload a passenger with special needs.

If traffic can still flow, whether or not you use a handicapped space I claim it is OK to unload a handicapped person in front of the store or whatever no matter how long it takes provided it is OK to unload a non-handicapped person in front of the store no matter how short it takes.

I am thinking about thoser fire lanes with painted stripes through them that are used neither for through traffic nor for parking.

I am not saying you shouldn't unload a handicapped person, but the implication was that you SHOULD do that, unless the handicapped person is driving. It is rare that this will be possible, because it means there must be no curb, or that you can lift a wheelchair (electric/motor chairs weigh a ton!) up to the curb, and if the handicappe dperson is on the drivers side, then you cant unload them into the street. It also depends on whether the handicapped person can sit there by themselves while you park the car. There seem to be a lot of people with disabled children, so this is not an option.

I was not saying that you can't drop off people, just that it is often not possible, and you should be able to use a tag to park even if the handicapped person is a passenger.

Of course you can use the tag to park if the HC person is the passenger NO WHERE does it say they are only for HC drivers. and I still contend that even if you DO drop the person on the going in part you may still park in the HC parking as they person will need to return to the vehicle and may not be being picked up.

I think there can be a difference in "dropoff".

One, generally considered, would be letting the person off at the edge of handicap parking. This would be right at the edge of the parking area. The best example of this would be Epcot where there is actaully a waiting area on one side. There is really no problem dropping a person here and then parking in a handicap space, as it is just a matter of saving steps.

The other is the TTC designated dropoff area. To get there would involve travelling down World Drive and turning left at Seven Seas Drive. After crossing over the tramway, you will see a driveway on the right for taxis and dropoff. This avoids the pedestrian tunnel under Seven Seas Drive and lets the person off very close to the ticket booths.

However, after dropping the person off you have to continue on Seven Seas DRive, turn left onto Floridian Way, and go almost all the way back to the toll booths until you can turn around and then park. At this point you are probably better off to park in a "normal" space and use the tram to get to the TTC and meet up with the person who you dropped off.

The major downside to this is when you go to exit. You would have to take the person to the dropoff area, get in a tram and go out to your car. Then you would actually have to leave the parking lot and return through the toll boths on the far right side to take World Drive and then drive to the dropoff area.

One important thing to consider is if you get questioned by a Deputy Sheriff when you park the car. If you are in one of the handicap areas and you have just dropped someone off at the edge of the area it is easy to verify that you have dropped someone off and it is legitimate. If you drop them at the TTC dropoff area and then attempt to park in the MK lot handicap parking and are questioned, you would have a difficult time explaining.
