I have an issue in Georgia you're not allowed to have a handicap placard and handicap tags on your cars so as soon as I could get the tags I got the tags now I'm going to be traveling to Florida in December and I have a rental car rented I have an out-of-date placard how do I use my handicap disabilities in a rental car if I don't have a valid placard and can't get one in Georgia

See if GA will give you a temporary placard. Ask for an expiration the end of the month of your trip. You can't be the first person with this need.

You can search. You can get a placard in FL but I think it's a PITA
Edited to add I did the search 4 u

Edited to add YOU'RE MISTAKEN GA will issue both

A permanently disabled person may apply for both a disabled person’s parking permit/placard and a disabled person’s license plate with a Form MV-9D Disabled Person’s Parking Affidavit by checking the applicable boxes. The vehicle owner information is only required when applying for a disabled person’s license plate. The applicable box on this form must be checked indicating the type of parking permit/placard or license plate being requested.

I am Georgia and we were refused both by our County DMV. Said we had to choose. Wasn’t worth the fight with DMV so we took hang tag since sometimes DS rides with others.

I offered a link from GA official website. Either the policy . changed since you applied or the bureaucrat you dealt with is ignorant.

I saw your link. The form actually has plenty of questionable wordage that doesn't commit either way. At the very top its says you are applying for placard OR plate. Add that as an individual there is NO place for me to enter the vehicle information that would be required for a plate.

It should be no surprise that one entity policy isn't followed by another. DMV is run by county not the state and not sure they have a good reputations anywhere. Arguing with DMV usually degrades pretty quickly around here.

I would have done what you did. Accept the placard and not waste my time educating ignorant bureaucrats.

The OP needs both. You enter the vehicle information on form MV1. The instructions say complete all applicable boxes. Submit 2 apps at the same time if that's what makes the clerk happy.

What is the difference between a placard and a tag? Is one of them a license plate?

Placard is a license plate.
We had one when we lived in Wisconsin. There the license plate is issued to the person and when you get a new vehicle, the plate is just moved to the new vehicle (all plates, not just handicapped), assuming the person still qualifies for handicapped plate.
In Minnesota, all license plates are issued to the vehicle. I don’t know if this has changed, but you couldn’t get a plate unless the person qualified for it was the owner of the vehicle or your minor child. So, we just have the hang tag, but can have 2

In S.C. It’s one or the other (plate or hang tag)…you cannot get both.

Be aware that different states may use different terminology. In Oklahoma for example, we are issued either a “placard” (hang tag) or a “plate” (license plate or license tag)

The end result is the same, but it can make working with local bureaucratic systems even more difficult if you are using the “same” language with different intent or outcomes.

Is there an option for a temporary hang-tag placard? I would think that would be a logical thing in an instance where your vehicle is in for repairs or if you will be traveling. (My state does allow it; you have to pay the extra fee and they only give you 30 days, but you can get it.)

In California you can get both, but I do think the temporary would be a good idea where you can't have both.
