Hi,
Can someone tell me what the difference is in a regular 2 bedroom at OKW vs a handicap 2 bedroom? My main interest is in the setup of the bathrooms. Thanks so much for the info!

Lisa

I stayed at OKW once and had a handicap bathroom. I haven't seen a regular bathroom but can tell you that the bathroom was very large. The shower was also very large. You could push a wheelchair right in there. There was also a folding shower chair that was attached to the wall. This was in the studio. I have no idea about a two bedroom.

The one and 2 bedroom units also have roll in showers with pull down shower chairs, roll under sink, raised toilet and grab bars. The "Master bedroom" part still has a whirlpool tub, so you will not be missing that.

Thanks! I take it the roll in shower is in the master bathroom? Is the other bathroom a regular tub?

Lisa

Yes, in the handicapped accessible accommodations where I've stayed, the roll-in shower is in the master bath. There are two parts to the BR; the outer area nearest the bedroom, which contains the hot tub and a sink and the BR itself with the toilet and shower. The two queen bedroom has a regular bathroom with tub/shower unit.

Thanks! That was exactly what I needed to know.

I know this would be an annoyance, but since my mom could sometimes stand long enough in the shower, I used to take a small bath mat and lay on the handicapped shower floor as I thought it a bit slippery. Also, the seats in the shower are kind of slippery too as I remember.

I am not going to ask for a handicap room. We won't need it. My mom is not in a wheelchair and it sounds like those rooms are set up for that purpose. I would rather someone that really needs it gets it instead. My mom had her hip replaced so it is hard to get in and out of a tub. We are going to give her the master bedroom with the shower stall and she is going to bring along her shower seat. It is pretty compact and only has 4 screws so that should not be too inconvenient. I think we will throw in one of the bath mats like your suggest as an extra precaution. Thanks for all the info!!

In the non-handicapped rooms, the master bedroom has a regular shower stall that is very large. There is a small lip to step over, but otherwise it is flat. The other bedroom has a regular tub (fairly low side) that can be used as a shower or tub.
If you find you don't want to bring her shower chair, you can contact WDW Resort Special Reservations at (407) 939-7807 (voice) or (407) 939-7670 (TTY) to ask if they have one available to lend to you. That is one of the services they have listed they can help with.
