Handheld video games on the plane????

Just because you haven't been told to put on headphones or turn them off yet doesn't mean it won't happen in the future.

One thing that several parents (including my sister) have found to be a great diversion on a plane is a bag of colored pipe cleaners. They are quiet, have no smell, make no mess, and can occupy a child for hours--especially if they are something the kid has never had to play with before. Get some of those sticky backed "eyes" from the craft shop as well.

Another idea I saw here on the DIS once was various shapes of colored felt and a piece of sand paper--they work like Colorforms but are less expensive.

These ideas are interesting...hmmm still think DS4 is going to talk up a storm though, even if his hands are busy. He has become quite the social bug lately. He like to tell everyone he meets jokes, "what's a cow's favorite thing to do"type. Fun huh? He also has OT issues so sometimes fine motor skill projects frustrate him and that could backfire, maybe I will run it by his OT and see if that is a good idea or not.

SO far he loves this Leapster and of course he LOVES to be read to, he really is not a fan of coloring but will do it sometimes (OT thing) but like with everything his therapy has done wonders, hated fingerpainting (sensory) now he LOVES it. So sometime surprises work well and sometimes they dont. So I am trying to introduce things before hand yet still have them be new so it peaks his interest, hence brining brand new books.

Most people would rather hear a happy child talking in inside voices over the electronic noises of a video game.

How about those coloring books with the clear markers that will only make the page turn color where it is supposed to? Takes the frustration of staying in the lines away. Or "pop-Up" or other interactive books? I'll bet he could stay amused for a long time with one of them.

Wow Anne you and I have different thoughts but that is ok.

I would rather hear the vidoe game then some kid tell me jokes all trip and dont get me wrong, I love kids and love to interact with them. But I am ok with the game as well, wouldnt bother me a bit.

We have done those Color Wonder things and he so far is not crazy about them although I keep reintroducing them because he does change his likings from time to time. Although strange enough he prefers the stylist pen on this Leapster thing than the button pad. It is about gripping. Oh well they have told me over and over DS4's issues have never been textbook so I learned to keep trying.

Have to agree with Anne USE the headphones. listening to the music from a gameboy etc is very annoying, over and over again. same thing with kid cartoons etc. I don't even let my kids turn the volume up on theirs in our own car! I have heard FA's announce to use headphones and have seen them ask people to use them on planes. I guess I don't understand the problem use the headphones or no volume why does there have to be any explanations given to children other than those 2 options. And screaming when you don't like it is not the other option. (and yes I have flown extensively with all ages of children)

We fly all the time with his Leapster, and no one has ever asked us to use headphones. Of course, I'm sitting right next to him, and can't hear the Leapster over the drone of the engines, so that's probably why. He keeps the volume down really low, and tends to pick it up closer to his ear if he needs to hear it. I bring headphones, but he really resists using them.

Why would that ever be? Why is it the option one or the other? My child could wind up screaming over a coloring book, but would I allow that to last very long. NO I would talk with him and calm him down and issue some sort of discipline with him. Then I would try to distract him with another trick fom my bag.

I mean these are children and some of you expect them to act like robots. I not condoning any child acting up but there seems to be complaining if I dont amuse my child the way certain people see fit.

I getting more the impression that some have a problem with the noise from a Leapster than there being any sort of "rule". I am getting the impression this is some's "preference" instead.

I think I will check with SW instead.
