Hand Luggage

I have just checked Virgin's site and it states the size of hand luggage should not exceed 9"x14"x22". How strict are they about this? I have measured mine and its 10"x13"x20", will I get away with it? I know it sounds petty but I don't want to have to check this in and be left with a carrier bag for hand luggage.

They seem to go through phases of being strict and then after a while forgetting about it

Usually just a quick glance at check-in.

As long as the bag is not huge and obviously taking the wotsit then you should be okay. I am always amazed at the size of some caryy-on baggage that people seem to get away with.

I've yet to see check in staff get out a measuring tape and your bag is so close it shouldn't matter.

The worst they could make you do is check the bag via the BAA hand baggage guides dotted around the check-in area and security.

Virgin's hand baggage allowance is smaller than the BAA guidelines which are 56cm(~22” ) x 45cm(~17.7” ) x 25cm(~10” ) so you should be OK.

Most check in staff etc will just eye-ball your bag. If it looks heavy and/or large they will ask to take a look at it and then have it checked in.

I doubt you will be stopped because your bag is 1" over the limit. 5 or 6 inches ... then that is another story

I have just come to a similar problem with my suitcases. A 30 " case actually measures about 1" more than it should do if I include the wheels on the measurements, do they really care if it is within weight? Would hate to get to checkout and be turned away,

Surely if you are 1 inch over on one side but 3 inches less on the other two sides then you are still 2 inches smaller overall?

Is this not the case with Virgin?

You won't have any problems with the size of your case being 1" too long when you add up the three dimensions, they are not that picky.

As for weight it depends. On the recent outward flight two bags were well under and one large one under by 0.5Kg but the check-in girl did insist on verifying the large case.

On the check-in at DTD coming back, the large case was 2Kg over but the three other bags were well under (~15kg each) and the the guy checking the weight did make a point that he was waving the issue. He did this with a few other folk as well.
However quite a few parties had their cases open on the concrete rearranging cases in order to proceed to check-in.

Maybe they had the same problem as us when it came to resisting the bargains

However it is not the case for hand luggage, it is defined by 3 maximum dimensions.
Hold baggage is the sum of the three dimensions.

I thought it would be ok, but nice to know others think so to. I'm going to risk it as its a wheely one and I get lumbered with DH's rubbish that he can't live without for 12 hours! I will probably put a flat one at the top of my checked case so I can change over if need be.

There are growing rumours that the single pice of hand luggage rule may ne removed.
Its only in place because BAA did not have enough security to cope with anything more
