Have never had hamstring issues until recently. Looking for advice on how to heal.

Here's the deal...during this year's Disney marathon, felt discomfort with hammies (as well as most everything else!), but nothing seemed too bad. With a week or so of taking it easy after the marathon, went back to running 10-15 miles per week without any issues. Then a couple weeks ago was on treadmill, and out of nowhere hammie started to hurt. Rested it about a week and tried again, and a mile in started having some discomfort. Decided to not run, but started doing some weight work with legs, as well as some stretching exercises. After a week, tried running at slower speed and no incline. This time got to 2.5 miles and started hurting. Not sure how to proceed.

Any insight/suggestions?

Thanks.

I tore mine when I was 13 (cheerleader tryouts), almost 40 years ago, and I remember it took about 6 weeks to heal. It made a loud pop. The Dr told us it's a time thing. I'm not a runner but I was doing gymnastics and other athletics at the time and I've never had any other issues with it. I do walk 5 miles a day and have played tennis many times since. My guess is rest is the only thing that will help. Do you wrap it?

Honestly? I'd try to find a good sports med PT (or at least a PT who plays well with runners) and at least go in for a consult.

I had some weird issues a couple of weeks ago ~ knee swelling but no pain ~ and decided to go see one. Not only has he helped me with that, he's working with me on strengthening other muscles to prevent further injuries.

I used to be a skeptical, but I'm a believer now.

I second getting a consult from a Sports Medicine Doctor. The only other thing that I can't recommend enough for future training and races are the CW-X tights. I had absolutely no tightness in my hamstrings or thighs and the IT band pain that I bought them to alleviate was non-existent with them and when I did start getting some tightness after the Marathon, I put them back on and again they helped. They seem to keep everything in the proper form - and I really think that they are magic pants! ;)

I don't think it a hammie, but I third the consult. Possible a strain but also very possible a nerve issue.

not to get you down but I injured my hammy in Oct. at the W&D half. Long story short, I went to a doc who said it was strained and suggested PT (which ins. only covered for about a month or so). I still have soreness months later. It's killing me not to be back on my running schedule but I'm too afraid of making it worse.

I say see a doc and see what they say.
