I forgot to mention this and many probably already know it but for those first timers confused on how to get around here goes!

On the floor in the hallways the carpets have maps of the world depicting ships in the fleet. If you have become somewhat confused on which end is aft and which end is forward, which happened to me often :).....if you walk towards the top of the map(world) you are heading forward if you are looking at the map upside down you are heading aft!!

Again, might be something already mentioned but I had not heard it so I thought I would share!!

Awesome tip! I did not know this and was lost a lot on our first cruise...and probably would be too on the upcoming one:banana:

It is really what helpful CM are for!! lol I was totally mixed up even though there are maps at every landing near the elevators, once I was in the ship all directions were out the window!!! lol that is why I am never the navigator when we travel :)

It was also day 4 when someone finally told me so at least you guys are armed heading into your cruise!!

I am not 100% sure if all the ships have it I have only been on the Fantasy!!

terrific...amongst other things i know know what "aft" means....still trying to figure out the "bow" and "stern" thing...

This is a great tip, but unless they've recently changed out all the carpeting on the Magic and Wonder, this won't work on those ships. I also don't remember if the carpeting on the Dream had the world maps.

Copied this from the Passporter

Here's a tip on navigating the large Disney cruise ships! The hallway carpeting on the stateroom decks can tell you which direction is forward (the front of the ship) and which is aft (the back of the ship). On the Disney Magic and Wonder, look for the blue arrow in the carpet -- it points forward. On the Disney Dream and Fantasy, look for the map in the carpet -- north on the map points forward. Easy peasy lemon squeezy, as my son would say! - tip contributed by Jennifer

Proof!

If I remember correctly, the flags around the border "spell" Disney Dream.

I'm just realizing how sad it is that I photographed the carpet!

A quick mnemonic - If someone is stern, they could be called a hard-a$$. The stern is aft, which is back. The difference between forward and aft and bow and stern is that the former are directional and the latter are parts of the ship.

You are my hero....I didn't exactly understand what they meant and then BAMN! There is your wonderful...wait, I mean Fantasytic pic! I take weird pics like that too because I want to remember every window, table, and thread...:lmao:

Thanks!

Well this technique works well until they lay the carpet backwards. This was pointed out to the officers on one of the classic ships several months after dry dock. This was posted here about 6-9 months ago. No one noticed till a passenger pointed it out to the crew. Probably a Diser of course realized the error. The carpet in half that one full corridor is still probably laid backwards. IRRC it was deck 3 -5. Can't recall which ship though. Funny though. It's still probably got folks heading the wrong way to this date.

This is a great example of the dilemma of knowing too much prior to embark. Sooo many assumptions.... What if the rules and procedures have been altered accidentally. Then you are suddenly out of the know. Conclusion..... Go with the flow...
even if it's in the wrong direction. ;)

Or bring your GPS Ship Mate Map??

:goodvibes

thanks for clearing that up....:confused3

Stern-back part of the ship (actual/physical part of the boat)
Bow-front part of the ship (actual/physcial part of the boat)

Aft- Going towards the BACK part or rear part of the ship (traveling towards the stern of the ship) "Aft sounds like a** and it's the back of the ship"
Forward- going towards the FRONT part of ship (traveling towards to the bow or front of the ship). "Forward and front both start with Fs"

Hope that helps those that are confused

This is how I also remember the difference between port and starboard. Port is Left and they both have 4 letters.
