I have a 4 yo -- she loved loved loved btmrr. My plan is to try space mountain since she is tall enough and I can sit next to her (unlike WDW) --- How scary is the gg overlay? I've never seen it....
I think i'm on the verge of not doing it with her since its in the dark, but I think being next to me she'll be ok....that is with the normal one. but are there like shreiks and ghosts all over the place jumping out at us? or what is it like?

same with haunted mansion -- is that as scary or more scary?? really the main thing in HM is the elevator which I can distract her on and the ride is quite fun and she'll be ok...unless the overlay is scary and stuff jumping out etc...

My opinion...and having a DD of similar age is that HM is less scary with the NBC overlay...especially if they are a fan. SM on the otherhand, I think is more scary with the GG overlay. My DD will pretty much go on anything once, but she does not prefer SM due to how dark it is. Add some images of ghosts that look like their flesh melted off...well...I would say it is more scary than the original for a youngster.

plan is to first do splash mountain on tuesday -- if that is a no go then def won't even think about space on friday... if she loves it then its worth a shot! :) but sounds like hm should be great!

I was wondering the same thing about my daughter. She will be 7, but just about 41 inches. Thanks for the info...I can now figure out if those rides will be worth it :)

not sure when you go galaxyg but we go 9/8-9/14 and will try to ride it 9/13 so if you are after that i'll tell you how we did...

I think HM is totally safe for little kids - we brought our DD who was just about 4 last year, and she loved it. She is apprehensive about HM normally, but always asks when Jack is coming back. The biggest difference we noticed was in the elevator- rather than the eerie music and hanging man, there's a friendlier song about Jack, and then his face on the top of the ceiling- not as ominous!

I have been watching YouTube videos with my 5 yr old son of HM so he knows what to expect. He says he doesn't think it's scary, but we shall see what his opinion is when we get there.

Now I'm off to search for videos of SM with the overlay.

My son and I agree 100%.

I don't see how Splash is going to give either of you an idea of how Space will be. Entirely different.

Space with the overlay has a huge space ghost. My son, even at 8, was terrified. But he's highly nervous about effects like that. Still dislikes TOT because you turn blue and into a ghost. He's 9 now, still bugs him. Loves the elevator part, dislikes the "and then we die" part. He also seriously dislikes HM outside of the holidays at DLR (and all the time at WDW) but the Burton stuff makes it safe for him.

I think the GG overlay is pretty intense. Since you are going fast and in the dark, the ghost does seem to pop out at you, and there are shrieks and howls from the ghost throughout the ride. I believe I saw a sign by the Space Mountain sign saying that it is not recommended for children under 13, I may be wrong, but think it would make sense.

Oh wow. I was hoping my 5 yr old DS would love SM just as much as I did when I was his age, but with the GG overlay I'm afraid he may not like it at all. Fingers crossed that it doesn't bother him.

It varies from kid to kid. If they like Space Mtn without the overlay, they'll probably think the ghost galaxy is cool. Personally, I'm not a fan of Space Mtn so didn't think the overlay was anything special.

I think it really depends on how sensitive your child is to "ghost"-type things. DS-5 went on Ghost Galaxy last year when he was 4--despite a CM insisting that he'd be terrified and remeasuring him (he was just 40 inches and looks young for his age). Because my kids love ghosts and watch a lot of Scooby-Doo type cartoons, DD-8 told him, "There's gonna be a ghost but he's not real--he's a projection, like the ghosts in Scooby Doo." (Me, I just told him to close his eyes if he got scared.) He loved it, rode it a bunch of times, and would yell things at the "ghost" like, "Go away! You're a Poo Poo Ghost!" and laugh.

If, on the other hand, you don't have a kid who likes scary things, I wouldn't recommend SM with the GG overlay. (I happen to hate the whole GG overlay, though I love SM in general.)

I would not take a child under 6 who has never been on SM before on the ride with the overlay. This video sort of shows the effects, but they are much brighter and more in your face on the ride. Especially the ghost in the opening tunnel, the creepy hang effect and the 2 ghosts in the final tunnel. The ride is also very loud. It's one thing if you know what to expect on just the turns and dips of the ride. But add in the animations and screaming sound effects, and it would be overload. Additionally, I think your eyes tend to track the motion of the videos, and that makes the ride even more jarring because you are not facing forward. At WDW the ride is pretty bright, at DL it is much darker and I think it feels faster. http://youtu.be/Cx1Ra1ayCwQ

I watched the video without him last night and I'm pretty sure he's going to say nope, no way and I don't blame him. He's just shy of 42" so he's tall enough, but now I'm just disappointed that I "talked up" a ride that will probably scare him.

I guess we will just have to aim to come back again next year at a non Halloween time.
