Halloween 2017- Resort Trick or Treating

We will be in WDW over Halloween and heard AKV will have trick or treating for the kids on Halloween night (we are attending MNSSHP on Nov 1). If you have been, can you tell me about your experience?

Would it be worth it to attend the DVC Halloween party in the CR instead of Trick or Treating in the resort (not available to book yet)?

Any other ideas to make Halloween night fun for kids ages 11 and 8?

In addition to trick or treating, they've had a pumpkin carving contest, the CMs carve the pumpkins, the guests vote. I can't remember the prizes. Also, it's pretty cute to look out on the savannah-the animals get pumpkins to roll around and possibly eat for Halloween.
