"Adult" dance style? Come on. I'm guessing you never took dance. And trust me, that body suit was a lot thicker than you think it was.

I studied ballet, tap, and jazz from ages 5-17. I don't recall pole dancing being a part of the curriculum.

True, however, the way it appeared is not the case. I was not looking at her using a magnifying glass. It looked like she was not covered. Am I not permitted to comment on what I thought when I saw her in that costume?

If you're not paying attention then yeah it looks like she's half naked, but in that picture posted you can the difference in skin tone.

Pole dancing wasn’t offered at the time. But I also did gymnastics - swinging on the bars wearing a small leotard. I had no idea people thought I was performing adult entertainment.

The dance academy I attended has always offered acro. And now, modern pole dancing is just an extension of that.

I don't understand the judgement here, but since this is not the first time someone has brought that up, I'm actually not a big fan of those other things either - circuses because I worry about the animals, cheer and dance competitions because I'm simply not interested in them, but Cirque de Soleil for exactly this reason. - It makes me uncomfortable.

Why is somehow wrong to not like this stuff? There are people who don't like soccer, or math, or classical music, and there's nothing wrong with them, right? I think everyone has a right to like what they like, but also a right not to like what they don't like.

We're only discussing our reactions to the show here. All the opinions, both for and against, are reflective of individual likes and dislikes, and if my position on the show is somehow only valid to you if I don't like those other things either, then here you go. - I don't.

It's not the individual likes and dislikes that I have an issue with - it's the insistence on calling something inherently "wrong" without actually recognizing that the same thing exists in art forms that have less of a stigma attached to them.

Just to play devils advocate you do have to intentionally seek most of the things you cited out. I think for a lot of people who disliked the performance part of their issue was not expecting that type of performance at a football game.

But people don't equate it to the same.

For all the comments about Cirque it's like people ignore Zumanity. Zumanity is intentionally risque. I can 100% tell the difference between the acts on Zumanity and the acts on Mystere, KA, O, etc. I know other people can as well.

I have zero issues with what is being talked about but let's not ignore that the "art form" has and can and will be utilized differently. The largest point of contention I see here on the thread is whether the "art form" was used in a risque manner or not during the half-time show--that's purely an opinion on it.

I have never seen any performance related to your post slide across the floor and shove their crotch into a camera.

for one, the performers aren't responsible for the work of the cameramen.

for another, you may not have ever attended a ballroom competition or exhibition. Some of the latin dances are very suggestive by your average american standard. And yet those are acceptable.

Speaking for myself, that was to most overtly sexual aspect of the whole thing. Yes, there was a lot more to the performance and while I did not find it as offensive as others there were a few moments in the performance I could have done without and that was one. Excuses or explanations can be made for just about everything else. Shakira's suggestive dance was cultural, the costuming choices were standard dance costumes and made to allow movement. The pole dancing was to showcase JLo's strength and fitness, particularly at her age. No excuse can be made for the crotch grab. It was intentionally done to showcase her in a sexual manner and, again, speaking for myself, detracted from what was an otherwise pretty good performance. It was unnecessary in that venue.

My perception of it was completely different. I even went back and re-watched after reading this thread because I thought I must have been mistaken or missed something. I did watch it. Four times now. I just watched it again and she did it 6 times before she took the black costume off. In at least 2 cases you can very clearly see her grabbing her body. If she was trying to avoid a wardrobe malfunction she should have made adjustments to her costume. If she was trying to shield that area from the camera she should have changed the choreography. It was done intentionally.

I don't watch any of that stuff. Why? It holds zero interest to me. I don't go to see Cirque de Soleil because the tickets are expensive. Cheer competitions? Don't get me started on those. A circus? Attended one time ages ago when Ringling Brothers was still around and it was...meh. And I'm not into watching or competing in latin ballroom dancing. So there you go. But if others want to watch all that...that's cool. I just don't think that pole dancing belongs in a Super Bowl half time show. Nor do I think that children belong in big bird cages on the Super Bowl "stage" either...that looked stupid.
