Halftime Show

Compared to the Grammys the weekend before, I thought this was pretty tame (everything is relative, right?).

Personally, I was more impressed by Shakira than JLo. If they could strip away Jason Mamoa's muscles and make him look like a weakling in that commercial, I wish they could strip away my middle age fat and make me look like either of those women .

I love Zumba, and the energy of this reminded me of all that. My 80 year old in laws who were watching it with me.....did not agree.

My favorite ever: Prince.

Honestly, I was embarrassed and stopped watching. Maybe I just don't have much experience with concerts, but after all the talk I heard about empowering women, they couldn't sing without making it all about...well, something not DIS appropriate??

::yes:: Couldn’t agree more.

Those who know me know in no way could I ever be accused of being a feminist or a prude, however it ( finally) dawned on me at age 60 as I was watching the 3-4 minutes of Jennifer Lopez that I could stand, how different our standards and expectations of performing are for men and women in our culture. Men can basically stand there and sing and we appreciate their talent. If they are known for their dancing ability, they do it with their clothes on. Women, on the other hand, must wear cat suits with as much skin showing as possible, mount stripper poles and generally behave as hoochie mamas in Go Go bars. Bottom line is a man can get by on his talent alone. A woman must also rely on her looks and sexuality. Now I know to an extent it’s always been this way- a woman’s face and body have always played more of a part in her career than in a man’s career (with a few exceptions of course). Any thoughts from you guys or am I just blowing smoke?

Great post. Women are absolutely judged more on their looks and sex appeal than men, and not just in the entertainment industry. It’s a double standard that has always been there. Yet IMO a woman can look beautiful and sexy without dressing and acting trashy. There is a difference.

Yeah come on guys, this is what they do. Shakira at 43 is just beautiful and such an incredible dancer, and J Lo is gorgeous at 50 years old, and even tho personally J Lo could have toned down her outfit and looked even better IMO, I loved seeing more "middle aged" women being appreciated for their talent and beauty. It was what you would expect from them and good for them!

...but I don't think anyone forced those two to use a stripper pole and behave as a hoochie mama. They chose to do that as part of their act...

...They are talented women. They went out there and did their thing. Isn't that in itself empowering?

Even though they weren't "forced," I agree that there is a lot more pressure on women than men to use their physical "gifts" to get ahead.

And even if was a positive (to them) personal choice, I don't think it was an appropriate one for a family TV audience.

I'm with many in saying that I like Shakira fine but never much cared for J-Lo. The show was pretty decent though, but I definitely preferred Shakira's parts.

Umm hello!?!?!? Adam Levine took his shirt off last year. Where's the outrage?

I'm not outraged about Adam Levine taking his shirt off last year (I thought it was a little weird in the context it happened), and I'm not outraged by what Shakira and JLo wore, I found the performances uncomfortable and awkward to watch with children. I probably should have realized the direction their show would go on, and if I had, I would have chosen not to have the halftime show on with them. There is a venue for everything, we chose not to watch that type of content with our kids.

I was entertained. I honestly don’t know how anyone could sing with that level of cardio, I just assume they were lip syncing. The costumes and dancing were very appropriate for two Latina performers in Miami, this isn’t the Midwest. As for the pole, there are many pole dancing studios/classes near me, it’s not limited to strip clubs. There is a parade here every year (I’ve never been but it gets coverage by the local news). I’m guessing some from other areas might take offense. https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/...photography&phrase=west indian day parade nyc

Female dancers are going to wear skimpier outfits than men most of the time anyway. Look at some of the outfits on any of the dancing competition shows.

But JLo and others like her do push the limits both in costume and dance moves. But isn’t that what all performers do? They push limits, they go to the next level.

Pole dancing is a form of dance. Just like belly dancing, which Shakira did and a few years ago would have been eyebrow raising all on its on!

As for watching with kids, what I have always said is, it’s dancing. No one is stripping g or having sex on stage. It’s dance.

For me this was never illustrated better than the Jay Z and Beyonce performance of Drunk in Love. He stood there like a boss in a suit and she gyrated around him half dressed. When women with the clout of Beyonce and JLo need to pander it really shows there's a problem.

Yes, there's a problem with JLo and Beyonce.

I was really hoping, with the whole Miami vibe, that Gloria Estefan would make an appearance!
I enjoyed the songs last night, but the pole was a step too far for me. Both women are naturally sexy, and their dance skills are amazing, it just didn't seem necessary (although some of the guys watched with would very much disagree 😝)
Gloria Estefan turned it down. She already did two Super Bowl shows, including one in Miami.

I thought Shakira was amazing and enjoyed her performance more than Jlo’s. I didn’t know Shakira was lip syncing. I didn’t think a stripper pole was the right thing to show young girls nor the crotch grabbing. Certainly not something to look up to and say hey I want to be like that.

I really think the crotch grabbing by JLo was more crotch covering. I thought the same as you at first but she only did it in certain moves when there was real danger of a wardrobe malfunction.
