Hakuna Matata - Running with the Reindeer!!!

Hey just checking in.

Wow glad that weekend is over!!!! NO long walk again for me. Looks like once again I am going in with no real long walks but so far (touch wood) pretty much pain free which I will take. I know due to PF DH and I never got over 15 or 16 mile walk and shut it down early so I am pretty sure we will be OK, just won't get the time I was aiming for so looks like a 7 hour day on the course:scared1:

Weekend was soooo busy, Friday night was my work xmas party, didn't get home till about 8AM Sat morning, it was at a resort north of the city and the company paid if anyone wanted to stay so we all stayed. When DD got up around 10 she advised us that her BF's family is having a spur of the moment party and did we want to go? Well we haven't met them yet so figured a good change to meet them so we went....again late night got home about 1AM, yesterday house decorated.....boy glad I have to work today might get some rest ;)

OK enough about me how was everyone's weekend?

Good Morning Team!

We are still in Orlando, flight got cancelled yesterday due to mechanical and today was the earliest we could get out. No free Internet at hotel.

I did not do much of a race report, the Space Coast race was a nice race, well organized, beach towels at the end instead of Mylar, pancakes eggs and sausage as well as normal race food. This is the first race I have gone into with virtually no training, and it did not matter much for the race, but the recovery has been terrible. Yesterday is the first day I was not in terrible pain and that was probably because I was not on my feet all day long. The race course is really nice, right along the Intercoastal Waterway.

Dave, hope your foot is better.

Eva, it was great to meet you!

Hi to all!

Margie, now you have added a year to my age lol, I am currently 60 not 61.

Have a great day all!

Good morning road warriors. It's dawned a cold 22 degrees, that's not centigrade, I'll be going to the mall to walk and not braving the cold. My race walkers and I are going to do our wednesday walk in the cold along the river, kind of a throw down challenge to see who is a weather whussy.

I've been rolling the tennis ball and a hard cylinder with my foot, lots of massage and using the stick on my calves and shins so feet are feeling loved.

I bought some cushioned shoes to do some of my walking in also.

Hope everyone woke happy and excited for the new day.

Dave:hippie:

Beth: Wow sounds like you had a pretty interesting race!

Margie: Yeah, I'm still deciding what to do. I know the program organizer so I might see if he can pull some strings and get it moved or a second one scheduled, at a different time.

AFM: I had to put my running on hold as I planned to do it Sunday (the bf's b-day was Saturday) but we kind of got hit with a freak snowstorm. It's been snowing almost non-stop for going on 36-ish hours minimum. All the schools (but the one I work at :sad2:) are closed and it's still coming down. We're expecting another 60 centimetres today and more tomorrow... Getting to the gym just wasn't an option. I'm so glad I bought gloves on Saturday! Now if only I had snow tires...

Oh, and wish me luck tonight! I'm sad to admit it but I'm a WoW player and the expansion midnight release is tonight. I'm going to be sitting/standing outside in this weather to try and snag myself a Collector's Edition!

Hi everyone! Happy Monday! Looks like we've got snow and it's sticking so it looks like any running I do this week is going to be at a much slower pace.

Saylan - Wow! Sounds like you got a lot more snow that we did in the GTA. I got in both my runs on the weekend before the white stuff hit. Good luck with WoW! I've never tried it but I loved the Mr. T commercials he did :) How are your knees feeling?

Dave - pixiedust: for your foot! I hope the tennis ball and icing help it to feel better! Sounds just as chilly in your neck of the woods as it is here. Bundle up if you're going out for a walk.

Margie - Both my runs on Saturday and Sunday went pretty well. I got up a bit later on Saturday so I decided to go running instead of yoga. I did end up going a bit slower because there were ice patches on the ground and I didn't want to slip and break or twist something else. I did the runs without my knee strap which wasn't the greatest so I think I'm going to keep that strap with me for the rest of the runs this season.

Lynn - The breakfast foods at the end of the race sound yummy and the beach towel instead of the mylar blankets sound like a nice touch. Even though I save the space blankets to use at other races, they eventually end up in the garbage. pixiedust: I hope the recovery process goes better this week and you feel better soon

Kim - Look at all those parties busy girl! Same here on the mileage. I haven't made it over 14 miles yet. I do have the 30K under my belt but I think that's long gone by now. I just plan to take things slowly and not push too hard. It's all about finishing and I want to be sure I can enjoy the parks during the next week :)

Beth - Great RR and great time!! Congrats :) How are you feeling about the half in January? Can't wait to hear more about your Italy trip!

Elizabeth - I was told the same thing by my chiro - that I should be sticking to running on asphalt, dirt trails, a running track ... anything but concrete. I've been going with asphalt because the uneven trail surface makes me leary. I think a TM surface is much softer but I've had issues with running on them (my old PT discouraged me from running on them). pixiedust: for your shin splints!

Connie - I haven't gotten my new tights yet. In hindsight, I should have realized that it's December and the mail is going to be slower because of all the Christmas packages going through the system. Right now, I have my Adidas tights and I'm using my patella strap as well. So far so good and I haven't had any chaffing yet (knock on wood) but I know how painful it can be.

Gerry - :wave2:

Sue - Were you able to run this weekend without the snow? It been snowing all morning. It just got here and I can't wait for it to melt

Nikki - How are your legs doing? & pixiedust:

Regina - :wave2:

AFM - So I went to the sports doc on Friday afternoon. He examined my knee and said he thinks I have patella tendinitis or fat pad impingement - more likely the former. He also said I was knock kneed and said not many knock kneed people were long distance runners.

He said the cause of the knee pain was likely because my knees bent in toward each other which forces the joints and tendons to bend in at a funny angle rather than staying straight in other people. He said it was something that wasn't easy to correct. If you were to hear him describe my "condition" without ever having met me, you'd think both my knees were completely bent inwards but that's not the case. I stand normally but know my knees do bent inward a little.

He said the patella area takes a long time to heal because it's hard to get blood into the area. He said for really bad cases, he sends patients to get some kind of shock therapy treatment which basically forces blood into the area in the hopes that the area heals quickly. I'm not there yet but that sounds painful (and expensive). I have a suspicion that's what the acupuncture did but I really didn't like the experience of needles. I still found them to be painful - both putting them in and taking them out.

He didn't look thrilled that the race was in January but I don't think he wanted to tell me that I couldn't run it either. I asked what would happen if I ran the marathon hard. He said the worst case would be that I'd have to take a 6 month break from running to recover. But that's the worst case and since he didn't flat out say no running, I'm still going ahead with January. I'll take a break after the Princess 1/2

That said - both my runs on the weekend went really well! I did a 5K and a 10K and slower paces. With the arrival of the snow, it looks like I'm going to have run slowly anyway so I'm not too worried about the knee right now. Tonight, I'm going in for training and I'm looking forward to that. The eating and no/low sugar is going well - I do feel like I'm leaning out very slightly but I can tell my clothes are a little more "relaxed". I spent Sunday shopping with my friend Spencer and he made sure I wasn't cheating and that we ate at places where I could get something healthy

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Thanks guys!

Vicky ~ I'm excited about the half! Nervous and exited all mixed in, but mostly excited! I will confess to a stomach lurch Friday when my Magical Express stuff arrived. And to tearing up this morning when I realized that a month from today (translation January 6) I'll be leaving right after school to fly down. And to feeling slightly nauseous when I realize that a month and 2 days from now I will have run my first half marathon. But it's all good! :)

Ok, now... ITALY!!!

I took Italian in college "for fun" and fell in love with the language and the country and everything. I've wanted to go for a while, but it's never worked out. I teach summer school, and we get paid pretty well for it since our kids are mandated to have a 12 month school year. I just made the decision that I was going to take one of my paychecks from the summer and do it.

So I went on expedia and booked a package with air and room - and added some things on. I went to Dublin with a similar package and had a great time. I'm going by myself, but that's ok because I'm not tied down to what someone else does or doesn't want to do. We get President's Day week off, so... I'll leave from school the Friday we get out and go directly to JFK airport. I'll fly into Rome on Saturday morning, then change planes and fly to Pisa. I'll take a train into Florence and spend the afternoon doing a little exploring around my hotel, then go to bed a little early - but when it's night to get my body adjusted. Sunday I'm signed on for guided tours of the Academia (where David is) and the Uffizzi Gallery - that'll hit the highlights and save me waiting on line for tickets and entry. Monday (when a lot of the places are closed...either every Monday or the 3rd Monday), I'm doing a guided tour to Siena, the wine country with lunch in a vineyard, and back up to Pisa. I like those because it's guided, but you also get free time to explore on your own. Tuesday and Wednesday I'll be hitting the things I want to see in Florence, just exploring and doing souvenir shopping. Wednesday afternoon/evening I'm doing a Tuscan cooking course in a palace kitchen with a certified chef. I'm guessing it's in a group? And then dinner will be what we've prepared!!!! Woo!!! I'll leave on Thursday to fly back home, getting in Thursday evening. Friday I'll rest and pick up race stuff, and Saturday I'll run a 4M race. LOL.

I'm sooooooo excited!!!!

~beth

Vicky: Yeah we're getting pounded. 30 centimetres today and 30 more tonight and more tomorrow. My work is now starting to send everyone home... Why they didn't do it hours ago, I don't know.

Mr. T was hilarious! So was Shatner, lol. If you ever have someone who wants to try it, I have free trial codes out the wazoo, lol. It's fun but we both definitely keep it recreational versus life-consuming (the aforementioned wait in snowdrifts aside). :rotfl:

My knees are ok when running, now, but taking stairs, especially down, is difficult and lunges are definitely a no-no. The intern is gone the next time I'm there so hopefully the therapist will know more about what's up with me.

I had the same diagnosis as you, though, if that makes you feel better. I had only one knee turning in, but it was SEVERELY turning in. A lot of it had to do with the fact I was knock kneed as a kid. I know you can bounce back and work through this! And electro therapy is really fun! It tickles so much! I'm right there with ya though so we can go through this together!

Beth: Sounds like an amazing plan for a wonderful trip. We expect many many pictures and stories!

Good Morning Team!

I'm a total grumpasaurus today! Was not expecting all the snow that fell yesterday & that is still falling. Oh well that's one thing we can't control it's the weather.

Beth, Congrats on your great race result! Your trip to Italy sounds wonderful.

Lynn/ Scott, Safe travels home. Lynn, PD to your knee. Hope it's feeling better soon.

Vicky, Glad to hear you had great weekend runs. Don't think I could do the shock therapy. Are you going to give it a try?

Margie, Did you get all your Christmas decorating done?

AFM, I got in 2 good long runs on the weekend. 10 on Sat & 18 Sun. Sat was cold. Sun was brutal. The wind was very strong with swirling snow. A couple of times I had to walk because it was blowing so hard. The roads stayed snow free until about mile 15 then it started to accumulate pretty quickly under foot. Took it slow. Didn't want to trip, fall, twist an ankle etc.

Heading out to do a little lunchtime Christmas shopping. Have a great day............Sue

Just got home and I left work before noon (I had my car cleaned off and leaving my spot at 12:12) and it is now 1:47. I live a normal drive of about 15 minutes from where I work...

Snowbrushes, fyi, do not double as shovels. :sad2:

Beth...Have a great time in Italy! I have a friend who went a few years ago, and she couldn't stop talking about how wonderful Florence was, so I know you'll have a good time!

Dave...I understand how it is to have to take time off from training. Makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only one.

Vicky and Saylan...pixiedust: to you both concerning your knee problems. I've had knee trouble myself off and on even before I started to run. And Saylan, I can especially relate to the going down stairs thing. Sometimes I would have to hold onto both railings and kind of push myself down with my arms to keep from putting too much weight on my knees.

AFM...I missed almost two entire weeks of training. The week before Thanksgiving I was too busy with yard work (trying to get it done before the rain came) to go for a long run. Then I came down with the stomach flu the day after Thanksgiving, and didn't start to feel like myself again until the following Thursday. Did a short 30 minute run that day, then went to the indoor track at the gym yesterday hoping to get in 8 miles. I could only manage 7 as I was experiencing quite a bit of pain in my right hip. Actually did the last mile on the treadmill to try and get some relief. Funny thing was that after stretching my hamstrings and quads following the treadmill, I tried to use the foam roller on the sore hip and couldn't even find the sore place! It seems that when I'm not in motion (running or walking) it just goes away. Going for a massage on Wednesday; maybe the MT can work on it a bit.

Hope everyone is staying warm! We had some snow flurries here today, but no accumulation yet.

Hello team!

Beth - WTG on your 10k! Your Italy trip sounds really fun.

Lynn - The breakfast foods at the race sounds good. Hope your recovery process improves.

pixiedust: to everyone who needs it!

AFM - Work has been pretty busy, I've been preparing for a presentation the past several days. I had to report for jury duty two days last week but I didn't get selected for the jury. Went to DH's company holiday party on Saturday night. It was fun, they had air hockey and billards and casino games. It wasn't very well attended, a bunch of people RSVP'd but didn't come to the party. There was also a raffle and... DH won a tv! It's the first time he's ever won a raffle at a company holiday party so he was excited. We leave for vacation to WDW soon :goodvibes and I still have a lot to get ready.

Have a good night!
Emily

We made it! We got there for about 10 pm and around midnight when they started letting people in the sky just opened with snow. We're at over 100 centimetres just today alone! Hopefully tomorrow is a snow day because I can't even see my car outside right now...

Beth-your trip to Italy sounds fantastic!
Did you check it out to see if there were any races when you would be there?
If a person cared enough to stop and help the person they would
not be concerned about their race times-so helping to save a life
would not be a sacrifice. What a HUGE blessing that we still have a few

Good morning HK,

I am placing the order for the medals tomorrow. If anyone else still wants one, please let me know. They should only take 3-5 business days to get here. I will let you know when they come in, so we can begin getting them out. I will PM you my address tomorrow and we can get this ball rolling.

We are expecting snow today. What fun. And I have to go grocery shopping. Can you beieve it?

Well, I am off! See ya! Connie

Good Morning Team!

Vicky – I have the same knee “condition” as you describe, only my Orthopod indicated that it was common in females, and the only “cure” was a knee replacement. If the “shock therapy” he is talking about it the electrodes with mild electricity flowing thru – no, it is not painful, and I think fairly common for a lot of injuries – I have had it for my knees, Scott had it on his shoulder. What you feel is a tingling sensation. Good job “leaning out”!

Saylan – Hope you survived your wait in the weather last night! You sure have gotten a lot of snow!

Kim – You will do fine in Jan even without the long walks! I have seen you do races before with not as much training as you would like!

Sue – Hope you survive the snow! Luckily, it was warm (50 degrees) when we finally arrived home, so cold shock not too bad!

Connie – Good Morning!

Nikki – Pixie dust for your leg!

Dave – Pixie Dust for your feet!

Margie – Thanks! Good luck with the little ones today! Yes, at least I am home, trying to get back to normal.

Beth – Your trip sounds like fun – if exhausting!

Mary – It sounds like our knee problems are universal, stairs are my nemesis also!

Emily – Have fun at WDW!

AFM – OK, we have finally made it home. I have partially unpacked, enough to get Scott packed up again as he is flying out this morning for work. We have some snow on the ground, but not much, and it was fairly warm yesterday – 50’s – today is windy, high in the 40’s, think I will wait until afternoon to take dogs out for a walk – they really need it, they are quite chubby after their stay at the kennel.

Take care everyone in that massive cold front in the east!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!

Hi Team!

Beth- I’m glad you’re feeling better and your cold is going away. Great race report!

Vicky- I know I am soooo bummed about the Princess. Every time I see an ad for it in a magazine or somewhere I get sad. Sigh: Why does everything have to be so gosh darn expensive? In the back of mind somewhere I’m still dreaming I’ll hit the lottery and be able to make the trip last minute and it won’t be full…I’m pretty good at daydreaming, haha. Lol, I can’t believe you were so bored on the TM. I actually don’t mind it. That core work out sounds interesting (bird dog exercise). I’m so glad the sports doc finally gave you some answers as to your knee issue! So what did he recommend again?

Saylan- Why won’t your boss let you take time off from August to November??

Dave- What happened to your foot? Is it PF issues again?

Margie- Did you buy a new computer? How was the Christmas lighting ceremony? Have you found anything for Hagen for X-mas yet? I would say Kyle’s time was maybe around 40 minutes? I love the turkey trot shirt! It’s very cute. Thanks for the review on Wicked. I would love to see it!

Connie- Welcome back! It’s so nice to see you posting again!

Kim- How did it go meeting DD’s BF’s family?

Lynn- I’m sorry if this is a silly question, but did you get to keep the beach towels at the end of the race? LOL, how much did the dogs gain at the kennel?

Sue- I think Black Friday is something people should experience once- even if it’s just to observe all the people and how crazy they get over getting their “deals”. You can tell which ones are the hard core shoppers. Way to go on your long runs with no falls or twists! I’m glad you made it through your runs ok. Running in the snow scares me a little.

Mary- I’m sorry you’re having some hip pain. I hope the massage helps! And I’m glad you’re feeling better from your stomach flu!

Emily- That’s awesome your DH won a TV!!! When does your WDW trip start?

Nikki- How long of a break do you think you’ll have to take from walking?

AFM, I went to the gym to night and tried to run, but my right ankle was hurting every time my right foot struck the TM. So, I stopped trying to run and worked on some ankle and leg strengthening exercises instead. I’ll try to run again tomorrow and see how it goes. We had a big snow storm last week and they closed all the schools in the area 2 days in a row. How come I never get lucky enough to get a snow day? Well, the maintenance people pile up the snow taking up multiple parking spots so when it snows not only do people park all over the place and outside lines, but there are even fewer spots. So I end up trudging through the snow to get to my office. The first day I was a couple rows further back then usual and I slipped. I almost fell (and when I say that I mean I’m pretty sure my body went in directions that aren’t normal just trying to keep from falling on my butt). I didn’t fall, but I think I pulled a couple spots trying to bring myself back up to standing and bruised my foot because I had a couple sore spots after that. So, that increased my fear of running outside with snow even more. If I can’t even walk without falling how in the heck am I supposed to run without falling?!? LOL I would never survive in winter if I lived back east with all the snow you guys get! Soooo, I decided I am not going to run the Christmas run on 12.18 because the snow scares me. I decided if there’s snow on the ground I’ll just stick to the TM because it’s not worth it to me to risk injury and possibly miss out on runs that I’m really looking forward to. Other than that there’s not really too much going on with me. I hope everyone is well!

Good Morning Team! Everyone must be sleeping in this morning, or had an early morning at work!

Vicky – TM’s bore me also, I am into audio books that I borrow from the library, and I will listen to those when I am either on the treadmill or the stationary bike. Sometimes that keeps me entertained more than the TV will do, and I have my own TV to put on whatever channel I wish, I am not in a gym where I have to watch the channel that the TV is put on. I have a walkman that I can strap on my back and listen to whatever CD I wish to.

Regina – Yes, we got to keep the beach towels!! I do not know how much the dogs gained – they are too big for me to weigh them, so they only get weighed at the vet, but they both look very pudgy! I guess that is what happens when they spend the whole day sleeping in a kennel (with a short run – but not enough to really run) for 10 days! At home they get at least a short walk daily and they will run around the back yard.

AFM – It was nice yesterday, and the dogs and I got a short walk in around the block, and then spend about 15 min on the training bike. Today I will try to extend the time on the bike and add a Pilates tape.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day all!
