Hakuna Matada - Jumping into a jubilant January

Fun race this am through both Universal parks and finish in CityWalk. I think personal best time or close to it. Im guessing fastest first mile at least.

Got to do mile or so stroll through Epcot Wednesday am before park opened up--basically around World Showcase

Knowing that today was going to be a beautiful day, I had planned to get outside for some exercise. Unfortunately, yesterday about 3 p.m. the sore throat I all ready had started to be accompanied by a slight fever and achiness. Still feeling puny today, so no going out for me. I've seen lots of people (and their dogs) walking past my window though.

Hey team hope you are all having a great weekend .

Not much going on this weekend, DH has had a horrible flu all week and just started to feel human again so we might just take it easy so he doesn't relapse and get sick again.

Hi Team!

Saylan- I can’t speak for spibelt specifically, but I wear a fuel belt and the water bottles fit into an elastic strap that attaches to the actual belt and you just loop it on.

Vicky- Thanks! I’m thinking it should be a piece of cake for him since he’s already been through it once and is really athletic. LOL, I wonder what kind of work outs they do. I remember when he was in the navy and they had PT in the mornings, he didn’t think the workouts were very tough at all. I still haven’t decided what to do with the house. I’m continuing to prep it though so I’m ready whenever I do make a decision. Are you planning on doing marathon weekend at WDW next year? Any more ideas on how to organize your medals? How was brunch?

Elizabeth- I’m sorry you’re still having shin pains. Let us know if the orthotic helps!

Mary- I agree! 12 degrees is too cold for me to run outside too!

Beth- Do you always get up at 3? A 5am announcement would still happen before I was even awake yet!

Sue- Have you picked out any triathlons yet?

Mike- 11 days in a row is definitely hard to do. You’ll have to let us know how you like the flower and garden festival when you’re there.

Emily- Those sound like fun races. I’m hoping to maybe make it back to Portland in May for the Tualatin 10k Rum Run, but I can’t really make any plans until March. It was my first race last year and DH and I really enjoyed it. I’ve looked at some of the races here, but so far haven’t found any for Feb/March that really interested me.

Gerry- Congrats on your great race!

Kim- I hope your DH feels better soon.

AFM, Sydney (my labradoodle) and I went to the local high school for some much needed exercise. I ran/walked for 30 minutes. Because I’m out of shape from my lack of training, I decided to ease back into it with run/walk intervals until I’m back to where I was. I ran 5min/walked 2min for 30 min. I figure I’ll do that for the next week, then bump it up from there until I’m back to running for at least 30 minutes. Sydney had a great time and loved running with me. The first 15 minutes were the roughest, but it was 44 degrees outside and very nice running weather! Have a great weekend everyone!

Thanks Regina, he is pretty much 100% now, tummy still a bit upset but I think that is the meds the DR gave him. I can't get him to remember that take with food means just that, not take the pills and an hour later eat:headache:

WTG on getting back out there, there is your incentive to keep going out to have fun with Sydney:thumbsup2

Have a great Sunday all.

Kim

Hi team!

Regina ~ No...but I'm usually up at 5 or so. I have to leave around 6:30 to get to school in time to get things situated for the day. I guess I'm still kind of a little kid when it comes to snow. Hee! Glad you and Sydney had a great run/walk!

Kim ~ Hope all are back to 100% at your place soon!

Mary ~ Feel better!!

Gerry ~ WTG on the race!! :D PRs are so fun!

Dave ~ Enjoy the walking. We used to go to Gatlinburg a lot when I was little. It's changed so much now...doesn't even seem like the same place. (Though Pigeon Forge has changed more...and not for the better IMHO. I remember it being a little artisan village and it's all commercial now. Boo!)

Running club meeting was fun yesterday. I did 3 miles and then some. My main thing right now is training my body to run tired - meaning running and trying to pick up speed at the end of the run so I can finish races strong. Central Park was ok on the primary ring road. The transverses were a little sketchy. The main problem came from multiple runners and exercise walkers trying to dodge people who were out for a summer Sunday stroll on a winter Saturday and taking up the clear sections - with bike taxis and horse carriages taking up more room. I finally screamed "WATCH WATCH WATCH WATCH!!!!!" at a massive group of tourist poking across the main road. Usually tour guides with groups that big will break the group into smaller bits because they understand that there are runners, inliners, bkiers, etc. using the path, and it's a bad point as there are curves on either side. But this group was just practically stopped and huge. INSANE! I was not the only one yelling at them - one of several. It had the potential to not be a pretty situation.

Man...my shoulders are definitely feeling the killer caterpillars. I know they're doing me good...but oy they are sore.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

~beth

Thanks Beth, wow running through Central Park must be awesome. I have only been to NYC twice and I absolutely love it. WTG on your run!!!!!

Hi, all,

Gerry, tell me more about the Universal 5k; how does it compare to the Disney 5ks?

Mary, feel better soon.

I was fitted for orthotics on Friday morning. This was my first visit to a PT and so I asked him a ridiculous number of questions about stretching, proper shoes, etc. A student PT stopped by and I asked her all the questions that I forgot to ask the PT! I feel much more knowledgeable about running. :thumbsup2

I think both are overall run by Track Shack? Im not sure of the number of runners yesterday but a far more reasonable number than the numbers at a Disney 5k. The Universal 5k was $25 compared to the $45 or so paid for the ESPN 5k next month.

Universal had some characters at start line, not sure i saw any on the course. Some team members stood outside attraction and cheered on. I wasnt sure if we would run through Harry Potter or around so nice surprise and many TM's in WWoHP--so nice. Only one water stop though??

But if you enjoy fun runs through parks it was very fun. Plus not a bad way to see both parks for $25

Hi team! Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Gerry - Congrats on your 5K! Do you have a picture of the medal? $25 for a 5K sounds quite reasonable. I've noticed that in the last year, race entry fees (Disney or otherwise) have increased a bit. There are races in Toronto that unless you get in on the early bird price, are actually quite expensive.

Elizabeth - You're just like me! Every time I'm doing a treatment with my PT or chiro, I'm always peppering them with questions! There's a lot of information out there and I'd rather hear what the experts have to say. Did they say when you're going to get your orthotics back?

Kim - I hope DH is feeling better soon pixiedust: Do you think he's going to be home tomorrow? I'm thinking of registering for the Sporting Life 10K and the Acura 10 Miler. I haven't done the 10K before but liked the 10 Miler last year ... well except for the heat and humidity. Tomorrow is the early bird deadline to register so I'm going to ask my chiro about whether she thinks I'll be okay to run.

Beth - That sounds awful! Sorry your run was interrupted by the tourists :( My first thought when I read your post was the tour groups at Disney. Oh boy! Ever run into them? Occasionally, I get people here out for a walk and they'll just take up the sidewalks and expect me to run on the grass around them. Um, no. Then they'll yell at me for sneaking up on them or running "too fast". I wish! How are your calves doing? I vote for a massage! But I'll use just about any excuse to go

Regina - WTG on the running! The run/walk intervals are a great idea for easing back into running :) Anytime I think of bootcamp, I always think of "G.I. Jane" but I wonder how accurate that movie was. Originally, I wasn't going to go marathon weekend in 2012. My goal was to go to Honolulu but I priced it out and thought it was silly to do one race for the price of 2-3. So I'm probably going to register for MCM and definitely think about Disney. Are you and Kyle going? Brunch was a lot of fun - we did a little bit of window shopping and then Whole Foods shopping afterward.

Mary - pixiedust: for your sore throat! Make sure DH is taking good care of you! Lots of people out running here too! It's not warm but the sidewalks and roads have dried up which makes running easier.

Emily - Good luck with your running this weekend!

Mike - Sorry to be a chocolate cake enabler :) I have a hard time saying no to sweets! Do some of the days from the 11 count as overtime or do you get a lot of days off after you're done the 11? I love the Flower and Garden Festival - I love all the topiaries! And I love that you put The Monkees in brackets!

Sue - Not that you should but, the ATB bib is pretty easy to get rid of. Last year, there were a ton of people over on the RR boards asking to buy one. I'll add you to the racing calendar as well. Is DH running with you? I do want to try that one another year because I didn't realize they gave out different medals depending on your finishing time.

AFM - I made it to the gym yesterday and rode the spin bike for 30 minutes. I thought it would be moderately easy but kudos to everyone who does spinning as part of their workout. I don't think I'd survive a class. I had the tension turned all the way down and it was still hard.

And then I promptly used all those calories I burned at brunch. I had apple pancakes and a chocolate almond croissant! Yummy! The pancakes were made with a chestnut flour so I wonder if that counts as whole wheat or something healthy

I'm back in the gym tomorrow and will probably do a 30 minute training session followed by treatment. My chiro is bringing in thinner needles and will do acupuncture on my ankle. I didn't want to do that because I didn't like the acupuncture on my ankles last year but she says because these needles are thinner, I won't notice them.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

I paid to have the orthotics shipped rush. I want to have time to get used to them before the half. They should arrive Wednesday or Thursday. Anyone else use them when running?

Gerry, thanks for the information on the Universal 5k and my apologies for misspelling your name in my earlier post.

I'm off for a long walk with my girls and my dogs. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, everyone!

Vicky ~ Yeah, yesterday had the potential for a massive person crash involving everyone in the area. Mainly because not all the roads and sidewalks are totally clear (and we won't get into the puddles at the corners! I need a pair of waders just to get to and from the subway!), so everyone was squeezing into a smaller area. BIG mess! It was a non-English speaking group, but some of them did get "OH! People are yelling! This is not good!" looks on their faces. Did sort of remind me of the Brazilian tour groups in Disney. These didn't have the bike flag to follow though. (I have encountered one of those groups in Times Square before. I wanted to yell "Go back to Disney!" hee!) The calves are doing better. I'm stretching them, foam rolling them, using my heating pad (especially right when I wake up before getting out of bed) and using The Stick. Don't think I'll be pushing it that hard with Banish Fat Boost Metabolism for a WHILE!

Good job with your workout! I despise spinning mainly for the seat! OW! I remember taking classes before and it got to be this battle between my butt and my legs - my legs didn't want to stand and my butt didn't want to sit. Not fun! Good luck with the chiro!

And I hear you on blowing all the calories. We had our parish meeting at church, which meant lunch. I think I can maybe have a square of cheese for dinner and stay in my calorie range for the day. But I'll just make this a "splurge" day and be really good the rest of the week.

Yes Beth Gatlinburg has changed and we avoid Pigeon Forge except for the outlet stores. We go during the off season and it's more like the old town. It's vertually deserted in the off season and the hotels are cheap.

I got in a nice warm 36 min 3 miler after work, temp in the 50s and warm sun, felt amazing.

Good to know! I'm sure for people who've never been it's great anytime. I was there a night a few years ago before hiking up LeConte with a group from my dad's church (I'd be so much better now! I barely made it that time.) and was like "This isn't what I remembered." Of course, our memories do sometimes make things better than they were. Especially when we're kids when they are made.

Hi Team!

Kim- Thanks. LOL, well hopefully DH will be done with his pills soon and then his tummy will be better too!

Beth- I would get excited over snow too if there was any chance my office would close for a snow day but that’s just not happening. Sounds like you had kind of a stressful run drying to dodge all the tourists. Is Central Park always that busy?

Elizabeth- I’m glad you feel more knowledgeable about running.

Gerry- It’s surprising the Universal 5k was so much less expensive than Disney. I would think Universal might be just as expensive, but maybe it’s because they had fewer runners. I bet it was great running through WWoHP!

Vicky- We are planning on it right now. I’m thinking we’ll probably have to skip Wine and Dine so I will put it in our budget to get there for the Jan weekend. If I start planning now, it should be doable. Plus, I told him this past January (2010) that I really wanted to do it in 2012. Glad brunch went well. Shopping is always fun! Let us know if the smaller needles really make it so you don’t feel it on your ankle.

Dave- Glad you had a nice run on a beautiful day!

AFM, Sydney and I went to the high school and ran around the track again. I ran/walked for 30 min with the same run/walk intervals as yesterday. It was about 46 degrees out and it was nice and sunny. My body is definitely a little sore today from running yesterday, so we’ll see how I feel tomorrow. I hope everyone has a great start to the work week tomorrow.

Good Monday Morning Team!!!!!

Did my Jillian workout this morning and have made my lunch so finally time to post.

Mike is feeling alot better and his pills are all done so hope the tummy starts to feel better for him soon, since we start walking again tonight in trainning for our next 1/2 in May:dance3:

Hi Dave:flower3:

Vicky: WOW I don't know how you get in all those workouts no wonder you look awesome!!!!

Anyone already making a decision on what race they are doing during marathon weekend? I keep flipping races I think I will do the 1/2, I have done 2 marathons and really don't think they are fun:rolleyes1, if I could increase my time and not be on the course for 7 hours I might consider but I do know if I feel I could pull off another full, I will be in for goofy again.

Well off to get ready for work, have a awesome Monday all!!!!!

Happy Monday team! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a snow day this week. We're suppose to get a "storm" on Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning. Definitely not as much as some of you have been getting but I'm hoping it's enough to keep us at home.

Kim - WTG on your workout and packing your lunch!! Good stuff!

Awww! Thanks  I haven't been working out as much lately because of the ankle. My chiro won't let me even do certain weight exercises because of it. But I'm going to clean up my eating next month so that should help. If you did another full, do you think you could do run/walk intervals for half of the race? That might help with time, maybe? Halfs are definitely more manageable, especially for training.

Regina - I was rather hoping not to get ANY accupuncture but if it helps to heal the ankle faster, I'll do it. Hmm... so I wasn't really planning to go back for 2012 but if so many people are ... maybe I could just go for the weekend :) Are you running again in your Vibrams or just regular sneakers? Can you take Vibrams out for a run in the winter? Someone I know says they have a neighbour who runs bare foot - not even Vibrams in the winter... and even when there's snow on the ground. Yikes!

Beth - I had the same issue with the bike seat and I put a towel on it too. Maybe I need to get a pair of bike pants or is it something you get use to?

Elizabeth - I haven't used orthotics before so I can't help there. I hope they work out for you :) Good to hear that you're getting them well before the Princess so you have time to get use to them.

Dave - Can you send some of the warm weather and sunshine our way? How's Sally doing with her job search?

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Morning team!!

Vicky ~ I don't know. LOL. I never continued the spinning long enough to know. I decided I liked the other classes better.

Regina ~ CP can definitely be busy. I think it was extra busy this weekend because it was relatively pretty and everyone up here has cabin fever. LOL.

Kim ~ Which Jillian workout are you doing?

I did Yoga Meltdown yesterday for active rest. Felt good! Today's 8 reps of 4:1 run:walk which I'll do at the gym. I could probably be fine at Prospect Park, but the MTA is doing all kinds of construction and messing up my route. GRR! I want to go straight home after a run, not go further towards Coney Island and THEN catch another train to go home. YUCK!!

I'm in for the full in 2012. One of my running club buddies who went Goofy this year was trying to convince me to do that, but it'll be my first full, and I want it to be special, you know? I don't want to limp through it. I might change my mind after the DL and W&D Halfs a month apart, and if I feel ok at that point and the MW Half is still open, I *might* do that. Wait...can you do that? Register for the full and then later add on the half for the Goofy?

Hope everyone has a great day!

~beth

Hiya Team,

Just a quick check-in today to keep up on the posts.

Vicky~ Yes, some of my nights at work count as overtime. It's kind of a typical union set up: Sundays are time and a half, anything over eight hours in a day is time and a half. I will be getting lots of overtime this week as we have a monster storm scheduled for our area. 18 to 24 inches of snow coming in Tuesday night and blizzard conditions expected. That means people panic and mob our store for groceries. It's pretty silly actually. We live in suburbia, not out in remote country somewhere. You wouldn't believe the amount of business we do! The roads will be clear by the next day. Holidays are triple time, so I work alot of them.

Dave~ maybe one day we will have to come visit you and see the sites!

AFM~ Besides working and trying to sleep, my training this week looks like it will be shoveling lots of snow. I am considering getting some snowshoes and hiking it to work and back ( six miles). I have also set a new goal of running the Antartic marathon by the time I'm 50. There are two and I want to do the most Southern one and then visit the South pole which is an add on to the trip. I've got eight years to save for it, mucho expensive!

Be back later this week, Mike :cool2:

Vicky, just signed up Liz and myself for the Old Kent Bank 25k in Grand Rapids Michigan on May 14th. This will be our longest race yet!
