Hi team! So here's the new thread for January! :grouphug: As long as everyone's okay with it, I'm the new team captain!

I thought we could start off the thread this month by talking about some goals for this year. It could be fitness, running, personal - whatever you want to share. Here are some of mine:

Running:
* Run two marathons (no time goals)
* Run a 3:00 30K
* Run injury free!

Fitness:
* Continue leaning out, perhaps drop another size
* Do 5 chin ups by the fall (I can barely do one right now)
* Continue (or get back) with clean eating and low sugar

Personal
* Find a new career/job

I'm sure everyone's busy getting ready for marathon weekend or maybe recovering from New Year's celebrations but don't forget to come by and post!

Hakuna Matata Team Bios

Verticalchaos, aka Beth- I'm 39 and live in NYC. I teach students with autism. I'm a fairly new runner - started with the Couch to 5K program at te end of June. So far I've run 2 5Ks and a 10K - and I'm training for the WDW Half in January and the DL Half in September. And I may throw another Half in there somewhere. I've been actively working on losing weight since May and am down 19 pounds and at my lowest weight in over 10 years. No kids...just one very bratty and noisy Quaker Parrot named Benjamin Coffin the Bird (Benny for short).

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 58 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 41 and married with 2 children, DD9 and DD6. I'll ran my first 5k in July. I will be walking with my best friend in the 2011 Princess Half. If I'm ready, I plan to run my first half marathon in late October.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. There has been a great deal of stress in my life recently that I do not have the ability to change right now, so I decided to try running to help manage the stress and give myself goals to work toward and focus on. Right now I’m working toward my first half marathon in October (Wine and Dine).

Hi!!

I love that you call them "goals". I hate hate hate "resolutions". (Also I don't see why they need to be tied to January 1 - I'm in the "every day starts a new year!" camp...as evidenced by me starting my life as a runner on June 30, 2010. :goodvibes )

Here's mine:
Running
* run my first half marathon (this will be accomplished on Saturday!!)
* run at least two more half marathons (NYC which I'm signed up for, and DL Half, which I will sign up for this weekend IF they offer registration at the Expo or just after I get home/January 15th payday)
* continue my generally injury-free training

I'm not putting a full marathon on here yet - I've thrown my name in the lottery for the NYC marathon...but I'm not holding my breath. And I'm not sure if I can commit to raising the money for a charity. So Mickey may be my first full medal. It's to be determined. IF I get into NYC, completing that will go on my list.

Fitness
* continue my xt with dvds - especially Bob's series...including his workout
* give Pilates a try (this will be helped along by a groupon that I bought myself as part of my Christmas to Me)...and if I like it, budget class cards into my budget
*get down to the healthy BMI range
* eat more fruits and veggies - maybe try to do one veggie day a week (starting after Marathon Weekend - I'm trying not to do anything new this week, especially food-wise...just balance out how I'm already eating and stick with foods I know)

Personal
* keep it up with sticking to a budget; I've made progress with this, but I can always improve
* keep the apartment cleaner!! - this was going to start as soon as I got home from my extended vacation, but all trash pick-up was suspended from like Christmas Day on, and I didn't feel I should add to the mountains of garbage...so my MLK weekend shall be dedicated to cleaning
* wash my dishes every night - when I don't use a lot, it's easy to let them pile up...and then it gets gross
* be happy I'm alive

There! It's in print and out in the universe so to speak!! :cool1:

Today was pretty good. Got my last run in before the weekend. It's all about XT and rest the next couple of days. Overall it went well. :yay: I am sad to report that the Asics GT-2160s come up slightly higher on the foot than the GT-2150s they are replacing, and my tendon that comes up the leg from the big toe doesn't like it, not one little bit. For some reason this didn't rear its ugly head until I was running on Christmas Day. It was fine for the 15K I did. I think I've worked out a method to make it work for this weekend, but I'm bringing my older 2150s which are nearing the end of their lifespan just in case. Then when I get back, it's off to the local running store to try on other brands that might not come up as high. (And I have no idea where my receipt from the Asics store is, so boo!! But if anyone wears Size 9 and likes the 2160s and is interested in buying them - one pair has all of 30 miles on them, the other will at most have 17 - let me know!)

The assistant principal is supposed to be at our school for the next two days (we have 7 sites, so they aren't always in the building) - we have no clue why - so AARGH! At least that will help keep my mind off the impending race until after 3pm!

Hope all are doing well!!

~beth

Hi Team!

Here are my goals for 2011:
  • Take part in both WDW and DL half marathons. REALLY want to get that Coast to Coast medal!
  • Continue strength training at my gym. My PT is studying physical therapy and is going to be gone for a 6 week clinical beginning Jan. 10. She doesn't know if she'll come back to work at the gym after she returns home or not. So if she doesn't, it's up to me to make the commitment. I can tell real improvement from when I started, and I don't want to lose now!
  • Take part in numerous local runs between now and September.

I reserve the right to add to but not subtract from this list during the month of January. Sometimes my beanie brain just can't think of everything all at once!:confused3

Hi Team!

Vicky- I’m ok with you being the new team captain!

Here are my goals:

Running/Fitness:
• Run 2 half marathons (no time goals)
• Run injury free
• Consistently work out/run 4 times a week
• Lose enough fat to drop another size

Personal:
• Find a solution for DH and I to get out of our house without negatively impacting our credit- so far this one is proving to be very tricky.
• Relocate
• Continue to work toward being debt free
• Continue to learn new things

I may add or slightly change these as I go to get more specific, but these are my highest priority goals at the moment.

Good Morning Team!

Captain Vicky, Do we need to call you Captain? :thumbsup2
Have you been following the Junior Hockey Tournament? Gold medal game tomorrow night in Buffalo. I picked the wrong time to be flying out. We will be trying to cross the border tomorrow night about the same time as everyone going to the game will be.:scared1:

Beth, I also feel your shoe pain. I've been a Mizuno Alchemy wearer for several versions. Onto version #10 & they are just not the same. I can't find a suitable replacement so I'm also running this weekend in a pair of heavily miled out shoes.:headache:

Regina/ Mary, Nice goals to work towards.

Fitness Goal:
Changing my training focus from running to triathon in 2011.
- Sprint distance Triathlon
- 1/2 Ironman Triathlon

My biggest goal.........I must stay strong, resist the urge & not register for Marathon Weekend 2012.

AFM, only 1 more training run (around Crescent Lake) to go before this "Goofy Weekend".

Have a great Marathon Weekend Everyone.
Safe travels. Enjoy the race(s)........Sue

Hi Everyone!

Sorry for being MIA! I pretty much took a hiatus from the computer during the past week or so with committments but I'm back now.

Welcome new team captain!

Goals, hmm? I haven't given them a lot of thought but let's see:

Fitness:
- Complete the Princess Half
- Don't fall off the good work-out routine I had going (which I did fall off in December and now have to work twice as hard to get back on)
- Work on leaning myself up
- Be able to bench press 75 pounds and consistently do 50 burpees

Health:
- Find a way to fix what's broken physically and psychologically
- Continue to improve my posture/form so I don't slouch, pelvic dump, or pronate

Career:
- Finally start marketing my jewelry designs
- Settle on a career path and plan out a strategy for it
- Find something in the arts that will allow me some expression release
- Work on fixing my jadedness with office and customer service work

Personal:
- Work on my clean-up habits
- Look for a new place to live
- Be a better communicator with my friends and family so I don't lose touch with them again

As for the recent past:

I'm over my bronchitis for the most part. I haven't fully finished my antibiotics due to a few days of having had some drinks with dinner (which I can't mix with my meds). I haven't made it fully back to the gym but I started up with my trainer again so I have started back on the track. If my sore arms today are any indication, I'm going to be working hard again with her.

The bf hurt himself in his training. His wrist/elbow areas seem to be really bad. I gave him a very very weak high five (more like a tap) and it nearly doubled him in pain. I think he might have a hair line fracture or something so he's going to the doc to get it looked at before continuing with training.

I did register for the Princess and I'm now trying to tweak our WDW reservations. I'm going to call and see if I can apply the race discount to the park tickets that I ordered with my package since the cost for this trip is going to be crazy already. We did manage to snag a king-size bed at the CBR (not my first choice but I'm excited). I'm tying to pick out good places to do reservations since we'll have the dining plan but it's been so long that I don't know if the places I thought were good are actually good.

My dad liked his RoadID for the gym. He was a little confused at first, and I don't know if he's started using it yet or not, but he seemed to really like the idea. He carries his nitroglycerin spary in a neck carry case so he says a bracelet id won't be any more cumbersome than that.

I wear mine everytime I go to the gym. My trainer asked me what it was the first day and I showed her and she says that while she'd probably forget to pack it, she thinks every person should have one. She looked around the gym and said that she wouldn't know who any of the people she saw working out were and who to contact if something happened. I really would love to find a way to get the word out to people because RoadID markets to the cyclists and runners, but not to the everyday gym-goers who might be doing it for their health and need to have that information ready and at hand.

We caught the 3rd period of the US vs Canada game last night. They were moving so much faster than the Leafs game. I felt so bad for the US goalie. He looked so down and I always hate to see someone who worked so hard look so broken.

Anyways, that's mostly what is new with me.

I LOVE CBR!!!! It's my favorite!!!! I wish I'd just kept my reservations there rather than deciding to stay with my sister, cancelling the reservations, and then deciding that with her and her roommate's cats I'd be better off in a hotel - and by then it was deluxe which is WAY out of my price range or Music, which is where I've ended up. I'm sure it will be fine for the purposes I need (a shower, a bed), but I'm a little edgy about it. (Part of me hopes that as much of a pain as it would be to have to change at midnight-ish, I get there and they tell me they overbooked values and have moved me. I know the values are all sold out as of now, so... It could happen. But I'm not going to be disappointed if it doesn't.)

The last time I stayed at CBR I was approximately 6 years old. :rotfl: It's the first resort I remember staying at and I loved their arcade (totally learned how to drive on the race car game) but we usually did Port Orleans among trying some of the Deluxe and Value ones. I'm glad to hear you like it! I'm not sure if we're in a refurbished room or not but I wasn't going to go with a Value (if any had been available) because the bf barely fits on our bed, and my Dad always had his feet over hanging on the All-Star beds (Dad being 5'10" and the bf being 6'2-3"). King size just sold me all that much more.

I'm still amused that the Disney person on the phone tried to tell me they built CBR based on the PotC movie line... This is after he asked me how many times I've been to Disney and when I started going. :lmao:

We were just at CBR for Christmas, and it's still great imho! It just feels like a vacation within a vacation. Port Orleans has never really appealed to me. I've stayed in the Mansions at Riverside and felt like I was in my grandmother's house (the one we had to call "Grandmother" - no "Grandma" or any such thing for her). Not relaxing to me at all. And I had a really bad experience (tied in with a really bad relationship) in New Orleans, so French Quarter is a big old NO. :lmao:

We'll see how it goes. I doubt I'll be a frequent Values stay-er...but you never know.

Hi, everyone; here are my goals.

Running:
* Finish the Princess Half
* Run a 5k at Disney with my girls
* Run the Myrtle Beach Mini

Fitness/Health:
* Improve my core training/strength
* Reduce sugar and unhealthy carbs in my diet

Personal
* Save for a new car

Now that it is writing, I may actually do it all!

Elizabeth

Have you stayed at the Values before? I know we did a couple times after Dad lost his job but overall I know they preferred the Moderates (though we did do a couple Deluxes, the prices are just out there for us usually). Of the Moderated, they liked Coronado the least and then I think CBR, topped only by Dixie Landings (yes that's what it was called last time we stayed there, lol) and PO.

I can totally understand your reasons for not liking PO (either one). Either experience would make the stay not as enjoyable. The worst I have to associate with most of them is I have a habit of getting sick at Disney. I can tell you, one thing that doesn't change from price ranges, they all look the same when you're staring at your lunch/dinner in a porcelain bowl. :headache:

Hi Team,
I found the thread. Vicky, you will make a great team captain! Round us up for a team photo this weekend! I'll be at the POP at 430 on Friday.

Goals for this year:

If the budget allows:

1) run at least ten half marathons

2) run at least one marathon (Chicago)

3) run the half at DL and get my hands on the coast to coast medal

4) FINALLY, get under 200 pounds for the first time since I was a teenager (soon to be 42)

Personal:

1) Pay off our car early

2) Reduce our other debt

3)Sleep more!

As I reflect on the past year, I survived colon cancer surgery on Dec 29th, 2009 and the recovery period of almost two months. Since then I have started running and competed in twenty 5k's, one 10k, one 15k, one ten miler, and four half marathons. Each sucessive distance was a first for me. Three of the races were at WDW. My goal that got me through the surgery recovery was to register for and run this weekends upcoming half (the Donald). My training has drastically fallen off this past month, but I will meet my goal!

Vicky, I will PM you my cell # so we can find each other!

-Mike :cool2:

Just found the new place, will check in after we get home unpacked etc etc etc........

Hi Team - just a quick check in while we are waiting for guests for the fireworks (we are at Bay Lake Tower for 2 nights and we can see fireworks from our room).

Vicky - you will make a great team capt!

I will think about goals but they will be very similar to what has already been stated.

We should be home tomorrow and can get back into some kind of regular routine again, for a couple of weeks anyway until we head out again.

Happy New Year to all!

I haven't stayed at the Values before. I may get there and find that I love them. When I'm with my parents, we'll pretty much always be Mod or Deluxe, but if I do any solo trips and I like Music, I might go back.

I figure for the race weekend I'm not going to be in the room that much - I land at 10:35pm, am walking the 5K with my sister Friday morning, and then we'll be hitting the Expo and hanging out until I go back to try and sleep before the Half (I've put in a request to see Wishes! since I have done a lot of training to the soundtrack and I would love to see it the night before for inspiration, but we'll see what happens.), doing the Half, and then probably only going back to change and get a cold bath before doing something (probably a park?), a shower before dinner, and then sleeping Saturday night.

So I went to my LRS in a moment of panic - taper madness is striking me only around my shoes - and explained to the guy my crisis (His initial response to my "I'm having a crisis" of "Oh, I'm sure it's not as bad as you think" changed to "Um...yeah...that's a crisis." (but sympathetically said) when I explained the deal). He said it would really ultimately be up to me - that either running on old, almost used shoes would be about as bad as running on a brand new brand and style in terms of things that *could* go wrong - though he assured me that there was nothing saying something *would* go wrong. He was really great though - he searched through ALL their inventory for any remaining 2150s in a 9, brought out a 9.5 for me to try (way too slippy, even with special lacing), checked the inventory of all their area stores, and called several other (competitor) stores with the thinking that if I HAD to get a new pair, I would be better off with a new pair of the same style. But apparently all the size 9s in NYC are GONE! :sad1:

So the verdict is... I am taking my old 2150s AND the new 2160s with a different lacing pattern that seemed to work for now (I'm going to try it on my walk at the FRNY fun run tomorrow and see if it keeps working). I will see how they do tomorrow night and maybe the 5K and make a decision as to which I'm wearing after that.

THEN after the race I'll look into different brands. Just by looking at them, Brooks and New Balance seem to get to the tie point at a slightly lower point, so I might start there.

Curiously as soon as I said I had 2160s and started to show where it was putting pressure, he nodded. Apparently I'm not the only one who's having that issue.

Hello team!

Vicky - you will make a great team captain :)

I really don't have any goals for this year at least not that I've thought of yet. I guess my fitness goal is... do something... not very specific but I have not been working out all the past several months, so I do want to get back to being active. I also want to sign up for another race and have been looking for some local ones.

Good luck to all the WDW racers this weekend!!

Have a good night,
Emily
