I've been seeing the same hairstylist for the past three years. For the most part, I've like her cuts. The color has been so-so; often it's totally off, or it starts fading the next day (it seems like it!). I really like her personally, but she's kind of , how should I say, flaky? Mixes up appointments, runs late often, etc. She did have her own salon, and had constant issues with the landlord (drama), so moved to another place and had issues with the salon owner, so she moved to yet another place.

The atmosphere there is not great. It's geared for Brazilians (now don't flame, I think people from Brazil that have moved here are wonderful and extremely hard-working). They're all yacking away in Portuguese and Brazilian T.V. is blasting in the background. It's just not a comfortable place to go. My hairdresser is now on maternity leave (a whole other story). In the meantime, I found someone in my town and really liked the cut and color she gave me last week. I have an appointment set up with the old stylist sometime in January. So what do I do?

A. Stick with first stylist out of guilt and loyalty?

B. Make up and excuse (lie) that I'm moving to another country?

C. Tell her the truth (Oooh, I might be too chicken!)

I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I think I'm ready to break up with her!

Call and cancel while she is on maternity leave and then don't go back.
I bet people don't go back all the time. She may not even notice

Why do you need to tell her anything? She is unavailable right now, you have found someone else - that you like better. Just cancel the January appointment and continue seeing the new stylist.

When she took her maternity leave she must have known that there was a chance that she was going to lose clients. Don't worry about it!

Go where you want. I honestly don't see what the big deal is here. If you aren't happy with her services, go to someone whose services you do like.

I left my stylist after eight years. She stopped listening to me and would instead give me exactly what I said I did NOT want. And then, she messed up my DD's hair too. That one was the final straw.

you don't need to tell her anything or explain yourself. Just cancel the appointment in january and stick to the person you like now. Hey, its your hair. It defines you. You need to do what looks best and feels the best for you!

I agree - just cancel the appointment.

Do you know her outside the salon? Like a friend of the family? That's the only reason I would think to give her any explanation.

When I moved back to Arkansas I used the hairdresser my mother had used for a number of years. She was my age, and I really liked her. Yeah she was like family.

But my hair just didn't look good. I'm used to getting compliments on my haircuts. Everytime I'd try to get my style updated it just didn't come out very up-to-date. She could cut hair to precision, but just with old styles.

In talking to her I realized that she never went to training seminars. She just was not keeping up.

I did sent her a note telling her that I was spending more time in New Orleans (true) and that I was not coming back. Thank goodness because around Christmas of that year I ran into her at my grocery store (about 40 miles from where she lives!). I was glad I wasn't having to explain where I'd been.

I am SO glad I changed. I went to a wedding last month - big wedding - and the bride came over and told me how great my hair looked!
