Your going to love them. I got my first highlights w/my brown hair and it makes a big difference. It added so much more life to my hair color. You'll never go back to just plain color all over. Do you know what colors your going to get yet?

I agree - youll love them. You wont hate them.

Are you going somewhere 'reputable'? I good colorist can place them where they'll look natural and just brighten you all up.

I've had highlighted hair my entire adult life. I can't imagine one solid color of (for me). As long as you trust the stylist it will be fine.

The dark brown is my natural color. I guess you could say I have virgin hair. I discussed the color with my stylist during my last hair appointment and she recommended something with the word beige in it. It looked nice.

My highlights are beige!! Theyre a neutral beige! :thumbsup2

I have never ever colored my hair, but last summer my stylist suggested highlights..........well I am hooked now, you will love how they just kinda make your natural color POP. This last time he even put some low lights in whatever I love my hair now and it still looks natural just gives it a little pop and brightens it up.

Yes, the place is reputable. :lmao: :lmao: She said she would start off with a few. I was telling my neighbor about it (she also has dark brown hair) and she said that she hated hers. That's when I started to doubt my decision. :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 I don't want to ruin my hair. :scared1:

Yeah - but how do YOU think your neighbor's highlights look?

Ive done so many people's hair - there are people out there who NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO they "hate" their hair. :confused3

Dont let your neighbors bad experience make you nervous. Youll be good! Post pics!

Oh, this sounds exciting! When I asked my stylist if she thought highlights would be a good choice for me, she looked . She said that they would look wonderful. We are the same age, but she is hip and I'm not.:lmao: Her hair color looks fabulous. She called today to confirm my appointment (left a message) and one could hear the excitement in her voice. :lmao: :lmao:

I wish I hated my highlights but once I had my hair highlighted the first time - I was hooked. A good stylist (sounds like you have one) is the best tip I have.:thumbsup2

She must have had it done years ago because I've always seen the same hair color on her: dark brown, no highlights.

Yeah - perfect example. A "do nothing with her hair" person not liking the *POP* and vibrance highlights give you.

You make sure you toss your hair around, so it refelects lots of light, next time you see her. :thumbsup2 ;)

Oh, I'm so glad you had this thread, I need to call my stylist to get my roots done - ASAP!!! I can't imagine (nor do I remember) life without highlights. Don't ask me what my natural color is.

Actually, it's more of a mousy brown with a few strands of gray (thanks to DD#3:rolleyes:), but I'm really a blonde at heart.

You will love and you'll look great.

Ok, I must say that you all calmed my worries. Thanks! I even thought about not having it done tomorrow, but I'm definitely going through with it now. :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I have very dark brown hair too, and I just got my first highlights in December. Like you, I was nervous about them not looking natural enough, or too blonde, or too chunky, etc.

I did a few things:

1. I scoured the internet & magazines to find examples of highlights I liked (and didn't like). I didn't bring tons of photos, just a few key images to portray to the colorist what I was thinking. Some photos showed the color I liked, others showed the amount of chunkiness I liked.

2. I went to a reputable salon that actually was known for their coloring process.

3. I took my time to explain to the colorist what I wanted and also what was making me nervous about it. Tell him/her the reason why you are hesitant and ask for their opinion and input.

4. After I talked with the colorist, she pulled out a display of little fake hair swatches that showed the range of all possible colors. She told me which one she was thinking of, and asked me what I thought of it. I felt a lot better seeing it first.

The result was highlights I LOVE! Anyway, hope this helps!
