Short and to the point - will coloring your hair over a period of time - 2 years straight now for me - make it thin out? I've used the same brand the whole time and I've noticed that the past 8 to 10 months my hair is slowly thining.

Now this could possibly be hereditary as my mother has very thin hair. But Mom's hair has been thin most of her life just gotten thinner as she's gotten older. I'm debating on whether I should give up coloring but how can I transition to no color now :confused3 I'm only 40 but my hair is probably 50% grey at this point. Actually white in the front and salt/pepper on the rest.

Any ideas?

I've been dyeing my hair for 14 years straight now and I haven't noticed a difference. I do notice that the thickness does vary with the change in seasons - it gets a little thinner at the beginning of summer and again at the beginning of winter - but then it evens out as the season settles in.

And my stylist uses a different brand and colour every time. I'm actually surprised that after all this time, with all the chemicals I've put into it, that it hasn't started falling out! :teeth:

I have been coloring my hair for 19 years and it is a thick and unruly as ever (unfortunately!).

my hair has so much chemical in it i'm surprised i'm not bald! it's chemically (japanese style) straightened, and highlighted, with dye over that. it's as thick as ever. i'd say your hair is naturally thinning, unless it falls out in patched i wouldn't stress too much about it. also, thinning hair can be a sign of thyroid issues, nothing to fret over though. you may just want a blood work-up next time you see your doctor.

i had the same issue and went in to see my doctor. she said it probably wasn't related to the hair dying.

Ooh, can I ask you about the straightening? I have always wanted to do that, but I've heard it's really expensive and time consuming.

I just hate my semi-curly, semi-wavy, ALL frizzy hair.

i paid about $250 including tips when i did mine in NY. it's way more money here in florida but i was up north for a wedding. it was the BEST money i have ever spent on myself!! my hair is now pin straight, doesn't need any additional straightening or blow drying. now that it has grown out, the top of my hair is wavy, but being so long and heavy the wave barely shows when it dries.
total it took about 6 hours to do but there was a lot of down time. i'd do it again in a hearbeat.
normally my hair is frizzy and curly. it did dry out my hair, but i just use a lot of conditioner.

I've been coloring for over 25 years and mine is the same as always.

A drop in hormones as menopause approaches is a more likely culprit. I'd suggest speaking to your doctor and hair dresser.

i've been dyeing mine since i was 13 (so, 16 years) and i haven't noticed any changes yet. and i switch brands every so many years, when i get bored.
